Shakira's two young sons "absolutely hated" the 'Barbie' movie because they found it "emasculating".
The 47-year-old pop superstar has revealed she took her boys Milan, 11, and Sasha, nine, to see the Greta Gerwig movie last summer but neither of them enjoyed it because of the film's themes of feminism and patriarchy - and the singer insists she agrees with them.
She told Allure magazine: "My sons absolutely hated it ['Barbie']. They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent."
Shakira went on to explain her view, adding: "I'm raising two boys. I want 'em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women. I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide.
"I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost."
Shakira concluded: "Just because a woman can do it all doesn’t mean she should? Why not share the load with people who deserve to carry it, who have a duty to carry it as well?"
It comes after the singer - who split from footballer Gerard Pique in 2022 - previously declared having a longterm partner was "dragging" her down.
Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music, she said: "In a way it's kind of good not to have a husband because it was dragging me down. Now I feel like working, I feel like writing songs, I feel like making music, it's just a compulsive need that I didn't have before."
However, the mother-of-two admitted being a "single mother" means it can be "more challenging" trying to balance her career and personal life.
She added: "I am in charge of these two kids, these two babies who depend on me so much and I'm a single mother, I don't have a husband and home to help out with anything."
