Walt Disney Co. will break ground on two attractions, one in California and the other in Florida, next year.
The Disney corporation will begin construction on two new Star Wars attractions in 2016, according to the company’s Chief Operating Officer Thomas Staggs. Both will be built in Disney’s two existing theme parks in Florida and California.
The areas, which will be themed ‘lands’ at each park, will be 14 acres each, representing the largest single-themed expansions in terms of size in Disney’s history, according to the news that was announced on Thursday (September 10th).
Disney bought out Lucasfilm, which holds the rights to all things Star Wars, for $4.06 billion back in 2012. Staggs, speaking at the Bank of America-Merrill Lynch 2015 Media, Communications and Entertainment Conference in Beverly Hills, remained tight-lipped as to when the attractions would actually be opened, but we already have a rough idea as to what the attractions will include when they do.
CEO Bob Iger revealed a handful of details at the D23 fan expo in Anaheim last month, including a teaser that visitors will get the opportunity to take control of Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon and be sent on a “customised secret mission”.

“I am thrilled to announce the next chapter in the long and exciting history between Disney Parks and Star Wars,” Iger said. “We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single themed land expansion ever.”
“These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new Star Wars planet, including an epic Star Wars adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance.”
Meanwhile, every Star Wars fan is willing the clock to go by a little faster, as the seventh instalment in the movie franchise, The Force Awakens, is due to open in theaters on December 18th.
