Lucasfilm and Disney have teamed up once more, this time for a tablet-based computer game entitled Star Wars: Commander. The new game was released on iPhone and iPad today, with versions for other devices to follow at a later date.

Looking at the existing stills for the new game, it’s clearly based on the Clash of Clans ‘base building’ model that has spawned a glut of similar titles. Players construct their own bases, then attacks those belonging to other players while simultaneously defending their own. Here, though, the landscape is Tatooine and the building blocks of the game are TIE fighters and Stormtroopers.

Like many tablet-based games, Star Wars: Commander is free to play but funded through in-app purchases that enhance the player’s enjoyment and rate of progress.

In the chronology of Star Wars, Commander is set during the Galactic Civil War that formed the original trilogy of films (episodes IV, V, VI). Players start off the game as neutral, but as it develops they can decide whether to fight with the rebels or the Empire.

Just like The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle Earth and The Simpsons: Tapped Out, the new game offers some novelty along with classic thrills, with the makers borrowing from key parts of the Star Wars mythology but stretching them out to offer new and unique narratives to players.

Disney Interactive’s executive producer and vice president of operations Nathan Etter said “for the team, this has been an opportunity of a lifetime to work with the Lucasfilm team and build a game set in the Star Wars universe.”

The two companies have already announced a new animated TV series called ‘Star Wars: Rebels’ that will premiere on the Disney Channel in October.
