American actor and musician Steve Van Zandt's signature bandana covers the permanent hair loss he suffered following a serious car accident.

The E STREET guitarist, 55, hated the idea of wearing a wig so much he decided to wear scarves instead - as baldness didn't suit his rocker image.

He says, "When I was younger I went through the windshield of a car and my hair didn't grow right back.

"I had been wearing scarves occasionally and I decided that I didn't want to deal with wigs and things, so I just stumbled onto my thing."
