The Transformers universe will be expanding and Paramount, the studios behind the hit films, are in negotiations to hire Akiva Goldsman to head a group of writers to pen a series of Transformers scripts. If Goldsman is hired, he will be working alongside director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg.

Multi-million dollar sequels and series of spin-offs will reportedly be in the works as soon as a team of writers are brought together under Goldsman. Goldsman may not be required to write the scripts but will select the writers and act as the head of the writing unit.

Goldsman is a script writer, director and producer best known for penning the screenplay of A Beautiful Mind and The Da Vinci Code. He won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for A Beautiful Mind in 2001.

The new team of writers will reportedly be set up quickly. Bay will return to direct the fifth Transformers film which is slated for release in 2017. The first Transformers film was released in 2007 and starred Shia LaBeouf. The actor continued in the role for three films but the last film, Transformers: Age of Extinction, starred Mark Wahlberg as the male league. Age of Extinction was largely panned by critics but still made over a $1 billion at the box office.

Paramount has evidently sensed there is an opportunity for further financial gain in expanding the hugely popular series. The scale of their expansion project is akin to the ever growing X-Men and Stars Wars franchises.
