Festival goers could still party like its 1999 this weekend, as rumours that Prince could still appear at Glastonbury continue to surface. As we previously reported, it was revealed this week that negotiations to book the funk legend for a Worthy Park headline slot broke down after the star got cold feet following ‘social media rumours’ about his appearance.

However, tabloid reports suggest that the ‘Purple Rain’ singer could still appear at this weekend’s event.

An unnamed source told The Sun newspaper: "Prince wants to show up somewhere as a surprise. "He has spent so much time in the UK lately, he'd love to do an impromptu set."

In an interview with the Guardian, festival organiser Michael Eavis explained why the star pulled out of negotiations.

He said: "We wanted him to play, and it got to the point where his people were talking to us about him doing it, but before he confirmed he got really upset because he thought we had advertised that he was playing. We hadn't, but with social media, rumours get everywhere, and one of those rumours was that Prince was coming. So he didn't want to do it in the end."

"All the social media chit-chat now about who might be playing really doesn't help us. People think we've advertised them early, but there'd be no point to us leaking details because the tickets sell out in an hour in October, before the headline acts are announced. People come for what the event means to them, not the headline acts."

If Prince - who has recorded a track with British singer Rita Ora for his new album - was to appear at the festival, he would not be the first act to perform unannounced at Glastonbury.

Both Pulp and Radiohead performed surprise slots at the festival in 2011 while last year saw Mercury prize winners Alt-J stun the crowds with a secret show on the Thursday night to kick things off.

This year’s sold out festival opened its gates to music fans from around the world yesterday - with Arcade Fire, Kasabian and Metallica set to headline each night of the Worthy Park bash.
