'All The Good Times', Angel Olsen's latest single, is both her first of the year and also the lead track from her hotly anticipated new album - 'Big Time'. The 'Shut Up Kiss Me' singer-songwriter last released an album of entirely new material when she shared her brilliant fourth studio album - 'All Mirrors' back in October 2019.
Since Angel released 'All Mirrors' she's had a very eventful two and a half years. Although Olsen has not released any new material of her own she has shared a fantastic covers collection called 'Aisles', a companion piece to 'All Mirrors' titled 'Whole New Mess', a box set of the two - 'Song of the Lark and Other Far Memories' and collaborated with Sharon Van Etten on - 'Like I Used To'.
More significant than any of her musical activities though has been the changes in her personal life. 'Big Time' was "written during the time Olsen was coming out as queer, and having her first experience of queer love and heartbreak". Recalling the experience Angel said - "Some experiences just make you feel as though you’re five years old, no matter how wise or adult you think you are...Finally, at the ripe age of 34, I was free to be me".
Angel Olsen had shared the news that she was queer with her parents but only three days later she had to deal with the death of her father and then only a few weeks after that, the death of her mother. Olsen started the process of recording her upcoming album - 'Big Time', only a couple of weeks after her mother's funeral. Still grieving and raw with emotion, Olsen began crafting her new ten track record whilst dealing with the traumatic events of her recent past.
Olsen's latest single - 'All The Good Times', has more than a nod to her past, both lyrically and in the Kimberly Stuckwisch directed video. "I can't say that I'm sorry when I don't feel so wrong anymore, I can't tell you I'm tryin' when there's nothin' left here to try for" Olsen sings before burning old note books and pictures in the desert fire. Even her silver tinsel wig from the 'Shut Up Kiss Me' video gets a reprise as she looks back upon her glittering past.
'Big Time', Angel Olsen's new album, will be released on June 3rd via Jagjaguwar Records.
