France may have become the latest country to legalize gay marriage, but posters for an award-winning movie showing two men kissing have been taken down in two French towns, St. Cloud and Versailles, following protests by residents, Agence France-Presse reported on Tuesday. The film, L'Inconnu du Lac (Stranger by the Lake) brought director Alain Guiraudie the Best Director award at the sidebar Un Certain Regard competition at the Cannes Film Festival last month. Versailles Mayor François de Mazières, who had opposed the legalization of gay marriage, told AFP that the outdoor display firm JC Decaux has decided to take down the posters after receiving complaints, but the Billboard company said that they had been taken down at the request of officials. A spokesperson for the film's distributor said that the company had been surprised by the removal of the posters. We're talking about a nice and well-designed poster that is on display on 350 French billboards without the slightest problem, she told AFP.
