Charlie Hunnam On "Fifty Shades," "Queer As Folk" And On-Screen Chemistry

Some fans of Fifty Shades of Grey might disagree, but it does seem like Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam is the perfect choice to play the racy role of Christian Grey – in that he’s willing to do it, at least.

The film’s director Sam Taylor-Johnson still hasn’t revealed how much of the sexual content of E. L. James’ novel will make it on screen, but it’s likely to be quite a lot, considering that sexual scenes make up most of the trilogy.

This might also be part of the reason why several actors and actresses turned down the lead roles before Hunnam and co-star Dakota Johnson agreed.

Hunnam however, isn’t one to be scared away by some explicit material.

The actor, who played fifteen-year-old Nathan Maloney in Russel T. Davies UK adaptation of Queer as Folk (the show aired on Channel 4 in the early 00s) is certainly no stranger to racy material.

Hunnam recently explained his view on the explicit scenes, via The Hollywood Reporter.

When it comes to explicit scenes, Hunnam knows what he's doing.

"My first job was on a Channel 4 miniseries called Queer as Folk. [There were] incredibly explicit sexual scenes with a man," Hunnam said. "I mean, I'm 16- and 17-years wiser now. So if I could do it when I was 18 with a guy, I can certainly do it at 33 with a lady."

And it’s not just any lady, but Dakota Johnson, whom Hunnam says he had instant chemistry with during auditions.

Apparently even E. L. James' source material isn't out of Hunnam's comfort zone.

"As soon as we got in the room and started reading with Dakota, I knew that I definitely wanted to do it, because there was a tangible chemistry between us," Hunnam said. "It felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it."

So there you have it. Though the source material has received mostly negative criticism, this wouldn’t be the first time that a good movie has come out of a questionable book. Of course, we will all have to wait (with baited breath, of course) until the movie’s August 1, 2014 release by Focus Features to witness this reported chemistry first hand.

Apparently, Johnson and Hunnam have more than enough chemistry to make it work.
