Supermodel Christie Brinkley has slammed claims that her split with John Mellencamp was due to his “politics” and “redneck ways.” Brinkley announced her split from the musician earlier this week in a joint statement, where the two vowed to “remain best of friends.”

Posting a picture of an article by Page Six on Instagram, Brinkley wrote: “While much has been written over the years about me that I simply allow to roll off my back... I do stand up for my friends when things seem unfair and this is the case here.”

Brinkley noted that the couple’s mutual statement had cited "distance and work” as the reason for their split, but that the article had decided to “cherry pick” lyrics from Mellencamp’s songs ‘Peaceful World’ and ‘The West End’ and use them to accuse the singer of being a Trump supporter.

“John and I are actually both patriotic Americans who do our fair share of working to bring Americans together,” Brinkley continued. “John primarily thru his work with Farm Aid and thru his music , which by the way he just gave Hilary Clinton his song for her campaign ‘Our Country’."

The model added that they would both be voting for Clinton in the upcoming election before concluding: “As to the problem JOHN and I faced it's just Mileage. Pure and simple. Not that exciting or salacious, sorry.”

Brinkley and Mellencamp announced their split on Tuesday. The couple’s joint statement read: “Both the mileage between their homes and their heavy career demands interfered with their ability to maintain the relationship. They vowed to remain best of friends."
