Once upon a time, a normal man lived in a normal house on a normal street. Then, something extraordinary happened. An educated woman - a scholar of both music and art - who lives in a van, takes up residence on the road. Miss Shepard (Maggie Smith) is insistent on staying in her van on the street, and the man (Alan Bennett), invites her to park her mobile home in his driveway in order to relieve his neighbours of the site. They agree she will stay for three weeks; she ends up staying for fifteen years.
'The Lady in the Van' is an upcoming British drama film written by Alan Bennett as part of an adaptation of his 1999 play of the same name. The film and play are based on Bennett's own experiences with a real-life woman named Miss Shepard who lived in a van in his drive-way for fifteen years. After the 1999 theatrical play, Bennett adapted the story again in 2009 into a Radio 4 drama. 'The Lady in the Van' is set for theatrical release in the UK on 13th November 2015, and will later be released in the US on 11th December 2015.
