Katherine Jenkins credits her successful marriage to remembering to be her “husband’s girlfriend”.
The 44-year-old singer has been married to Andrew Levitas for a decade and she’s been guided by advice from an older couple to maintain the “fun” and flirtiness in their relationship.
She told Britain’s HELLO! magazine: “We have friends, an older couple, who are happily married, and I often ask them for advice.
“I remember him saying to me once, ‘Make sure you’re always your husband’s girlfriend – meaning be that fun person, go out on dates. That doesn’t have to stop just because you’re married. You still need to flirt and spend time together and that always stuck with me.”
The couple have two children, Aaliyah, eight, and six-year-old Xander and while both have inherited her love of music, Katherine thinks it is her son who is more likely to follow in her footsteps.
She said: “[Aaliyah] is sassy and courageous with a great sense of adventure and the performer gene. She does musical theatre and has joined the school choir. It makes me smile.
“Even if she never does anything with it, I see her with the buzz I used to have, that excitement from singing with people. I’m so happy she’s found that.
“[Xander] is the one who might end up singing one day.
“He’s got a very similar tone to the one I had when I was his age and I can tell he likes music. He’s cautious and kind and funny and reminds me of my dad.”
But the opera favourite won’t be pushing her kids into anything.
She said: “I want my children to decide what’s in their heart and if they decide that’s what they want to do, I’ll support and help them.
“But I don’t want them to feel any pressure.
“I want them to be able to love music and have that as a tool in their life because it’s something they enjoy.
“If anything else comes from it, that’s a bonus.”
