Just as everyone was beginning to get really hyped up for Shailene Woodley's upcoming flick Divergent it looks like another movie may be just about to steal its thunder. You've got to act fast in this business (or you'll get hunted down, if these movies are anything to go by!).  Based on the series by James Dashner, The Maze Runner certainly looks like it will be worthy of joining the list of big box office movies based on young adult books.  Over the past few years movies aimed at a young adult audience, such as the Harry Potter series, Twilight franchise, The Hunger Games and currently Dviergent, have been vastly popular, drawing in huge audiences of young adults and adults alike.  They've definitely become a guilty pleasure, whether you're 15 or 50 years old.

The Maze Runner
Teen Wolf's Dylan O'Brien will star in The Maze Runner

Starring Teen Wolf’s Dylan O’Brien, The Maze Runner seems to be a solid contender to challenge The Hunger Games and Divergent in action and story, although unlike the other two movies, this one has a male lead. We think we’ll allow a boy to take control for once, there has been a lot of girl power in movies lately, we feel like we've had our fix!  Although no one could rival The Hunger Games' Katniss Everdeen in our eyes.

The plot of The Maze Runner focuses on Thomas (played by O’Brien) who wakes up to find himself stuck in The Glade, with no memories of his past life. Surrounding The Glade is a giant maze, jam packed with creatures that make the Pale Man from Pan’s Labyrinth seem as threatening as a much loved grandfather. When Teresa arrives in The Glade, those stuck there must find a way out before “the ending”, an ambiguous threat and they don’t want to hang around and find out what it could possibly mean.

The movie was originally scheduled for released in mid-February, although it’s been pushed back until September (Boooo! We don’t want to wait that long!). It does give us something to look forward to though (await certain upcoming article discussing who should win best teenage book movie adaption).

Kaya Scodelario
Kaya Scodelario stars as Teresa in The Maze Runner

Director Wes Ball seems fairly new to the big budget directing game, so we’ll be interested to see what he comes out with.  The movie will also star Thomas Sangster (remember, the super cute one who ran through the airport in Love Actually), Will Poulter from We're The Millers and Chronicles of Narnia and Kaya Scoledario who played Effy Stonem in the original British version of Skins.

Have you read The Maze Runner?  Do you think that the movie looks like it will do the book justice?
