Leonard Nimoy played Spock, on and off, for 47 years. He appeared in the original series from 1966-1969 before reprising his role, in a voice over capacity, in the animated series from 1973-1974. He later appeared in seven Star Trek movies from 1979 until 2013. Leonard died earlier this year of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, at the age of 83. His death was met with an outpouring of grief from his co-stars and fans.
Adam's documentary will serve as a tribute to his father who had long discussed working on such a project.
"This will be a tribute to my dad and Spock. We have plenty to work from because my dad loved telling stories and he was very fond of the role," Adam said of the project.
"He felt as if he had plenty of time, but then he declined precipitously," Adam added. "I was struck with the outpouring of affection for him after he died, so this feels like the right thing to do."
The documentary will be narrated by Zachary Quinto, the actor who has played Spock in the latest Star Trek films. Nimoy starred opposite Quinto as an older version of Spock in the latest film, Star Trek: Into the Darkness. A third instalment in the reboot of Star Trek is currently in the works and Quinto is on board to reprise his role. Another of Nimoy's Star Trek co-stars, William Shatner, will also be featured in the documentary.
Variety first reported the news.
