After she was trolled over her changing accents, Millie Bobby Brown has defended herself by saying she “can’t help” switching between US and UK twangs as she was raised in both countries and mimics anyone around her.
Millie Bobby Brown says she “can’t help” her accent changing.
The ‘Stranger Things’ actress, 20, caused a stir among fans last week when they noticed she had seemingly ditched her native British twang for an American one while promoting her new film ‘Damsel’.
She has now told TikToker Max Balegde in an interview she grew up in both countries so “can’t help” switching between accents based on who she is around.
Millie added: “Let me just speak to that real quick. I’m an actor. I grew up in the public eye. I grew up in America.
“I come to set and I’m an actor and I adapt,” she continued. “And so I want to mimic people.”
Millie was raised in Bournemouth, England, and moved to the US aged eight to pursue an acting career – and three years later landed her breakout role as American character Eleven in Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’.
She added in her chat with Max when she is around Americans such as talk show host Jimmy Fallon, 49, or her fiancé, Jake Bongiovi, 21, she feels the need to “replicate” their accent – with the same true when she is back in the UK.
Millie said: “Now that I’m in England I want to replicate that! I don’t do it intentionally and I’m sorry if it offends you!
“But listen, I am trying my best!”
Millie has been attacked online by trolls who have accused her for speaking “like a rich valley girl” during her latest interview on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’.
One said: “Her British accent is barely there anymore. I know she’s been in America for a long time now but omg it used to be SO strong.”
Another critic hit out: “It almost sounds like she’s doing an impersonation of an American accent throughout this interview.”
Others leapt to Millie’s defence, saying they loved her ability to slip between accents.
