The '96 cult film is back! This time: it's TV.
Netflix are shrugging off any competition from Amazon Instant Video, starting with an exclusive access to the new Robert Rodriguez TV series “From Dusk Till Dawn” for subscribers in Canada, Ireland, The Netherlands, Nordic European territories and the UK – in America, the show will air on the El Rey Network available on Comcast, DirecTV and Time Warner Cable.
The show expands on Robert Rodriguez’ established franchise, which first hit the big screen back in 1996, with Quentin Tarantino serving as writer. It wasn’t a critical smash, but soon gained cult status, resulting in two rather unsuccessful additions – a film sequel and prequel.
Rodriguez has directed four of the ten episodes of the TV adaptation, while also acting as producer, alongside showrunner Carlos Coto, FactoryMade and El Rey co-founders, John Fogelman and Cristina Patwa. Diego Gutierrez is writer and co-executive producer. A screening of the pilot will be part of the new episodic TV sidebar at SXSW.
“We’re thrilled to premiere ‘From Dusk Till Dawn: A Netflix Original Series’ exclusively in our international markets,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix. “Robert Rodriguez is an amazing storyteller and we think our members will love his thrill-ride TV adaptation of the cult-classic.”
Rodriguez, who is Chairman and Founder of El Rey Network, said: “I am excited about working with Netflix and Miramax to build an international audience for our series. This property has always resonated for viewers around the globe and we believe that it will be just as relevant for this new generation of fans.”
Unlike many of Netflix’s exclusive dramas, though, Dusk Till Dawn won’t be available to view in its entirety from day one; episodes will be released on a weekly basis in line with the release of the episodes in America.
