Pixies - Brixton Academy, 28th November 2016 Live Review

It's easy to forget that Pixies ever were a band that left the circuit. However, their 2004 reunion tour proved to the world that a band could come back and return to mass fan appeal. During their reunion tour of '04, they sold out Brixton Academy for a four-day residency. They proved to the world that nostalgia sells and it could be argued that they are partly responsible for the waves of reunion tours we have seen since. However to state that Pixies are a nostalgia act is to do a disservice to them. Especially since said tour they have released two albums; the disappointing Indie Cindy and this years fantastic return Head Carrier, which is probably one of their strongest albums since Doolittle.

Pixies - Brixton Academy, 28th November 2016 Live Review

One of the most enjoyable aspects about Pixies is that they are a band built entirely on contradiction and idiosyncrasy. A band now teeming with legendary status, Pixies returned to Brixton Academy bringing their undeniably influential and extreme loud-quiet-loud dynamic which has been attempted (but never mastered quite like them) by swaths of imitators. They returned to what they have deemed 'their spiritual home' for what is an onslaught of a return to Brixton Academy for the first of a three-day residency. That onslaught is a cacophony of guttural noise, low lighting and a no nonsense mixture of songs both old and new.

Playing a colossal set of 32 tracks, there is no nonsense around this performance and that is part of the charm of this band. There is genuine anger and rage in their alt-punk sound, and their undeniable influence on the 90's grunge scene is almost tactile. They open their huge set brashly and comically with the iconic Where Is My Mind? Whether you get this from their seminal album Surfer Rosa or from the soundtrack of Fight Club is irrelevant, everyone is screaming along with Black Francis through the murkiness of noise they provide during the early parts of their set. They continue relentlessly with powerful renditions of Nimrod's Son, Break My Body and Brick Is Red without so much as a breath or a wipe of the brow.

Pixies - Head Carrier Album Review

It's been 25 years since the last great Pixies album, the sole record since their hiatus ended - 2014's Indie Cindy - had brief flashes of inspiration but suffered by compiling previously released material. It seems the element of surprise of hearing new Pixies material may be a key factor in that equation, because I'm pleased to report that album number six - Head Carrier - is the full-blooded return to form that many people hoped it's predecessor would be. Personally that 25-year wait for another great Pixies album is now firmly at an end.

Pixies - Head Carrier Album Review

Head Carrier seems to have solved two of the biggest issues facing it before a single note was even recorded. Replacing legendary bassist Kim Deal was always going to be a challenge and that showed in the Indie Cindy material. Touring member Paz Lenchantin has now been promoted to a full member of the group, and she rightfully takes a prominent position on Head Carrier, fulfilling all of the duties such as vocals that Deal would have undertaken in the first incarnation of the band. Secondly every one of the 33 minutes of material on Head Carrier was recorded in the same studio, RAK in London, in a single album session. It's that consistency that eluded the material on Indie Cindy, which really does shine through here.

From the opening bars of the title track Head Carrier is gloriously loud, but never at the expense of melody and Black Francis's good old fashioned pop sensibility. Joey Santiago's guitar lines shift effortlessly between the loud/quiet sections that Pixies trademarked in the late eighties, and his playing is wonderfully catchy and off-kilter. In particular 'Classic Masher', 'Talent', and 'Bel Esprit', feature some of Santiago's most memorable performances in the whole Pixies back catalogue. The icing on the cake though is Lenchantin's contribution. Her backing vocals are the perfect foil for Francis' manic stream of consciousness lyrics. At times the songs sound like classic sixties pop compositions re-purposed through a meat grinder, with Lenchantin's echoing call and response backing acting as the only reminder of their origins. She really is far more than a substitute for Kim Deal; she's an accomplished replacement who seems to have reinvigorated the band.

'Head Carrier' is the Pixies' first album since their reunion release in 2014, but while 'Indie Cindy' featured only songs previously released over the years on EPs, this one is completely fresh and new having spent six weeks in pre-production being written and arranged. The band entered the London's Rak Studios back in February where they produced the record with Tom Dalgety (Simple Minds, Royal Blood, Killing Joke).

Lady GaGa made an emoTIonal and surprise-filled return to the stage as she opened the month-long iTunes Festival at London's Roundhouse Theatre. Having been away from a live audience since she was forced to end her Monster's Ball tour early this year due to health concerns (bar her VMAs performance last month), the singer made sure she gave a performance to remember at the Camden venue.

The Pixies Kim Deal

The Pixies released a brand new track on Friday (June 28), uploading the new tune 'Bagboy' to their website to stream and download (for free!). The track may be an indication that the remaining three members of the group are planning on going forward even without bassist Kim Deal, who left the group earlier this month, or it may just be something they had been working on and wanted to get out there now rather than waiting until the Best Of.

The Pixies New Song 'Bagboy' Debuts After 10 Years Of Silence [Listen]

The Pixies Frank Black Kim Deal

A new Pixies song 'Bagboy' debuted on the legendary band's official website on Friday morning (June 28, 2012) following its first play on Shaun Keaveny's BBC6 Music radio show. It is the group's first new material for over 10 years.

Bagboy is signature Pixies and features Frank Black yelling the chorus in typically shouty style. Though the song garnered almost universal acclaim on Twitter, many UK fans couldn't help but make the comparison between Frank's vocals and the voice of Brian Badonde, the charlatan art critic on Channel 4's Facejacker.

Kim Deal Leaves The Pixies, Possibly For Good This Time

Kim Deal The Pixies

After nearly a decade back together, The Pixies look as though they're ready to fall apart again after bassist Kim Deal walked out on the band earlier this week. In a statement posted on the group's official Facebook page, the three remaining members of the group told fans that Kim had decided to leave the group by mutual consent, with the rest of the band thanking her for her contribution of the past 25 or so years.

Black Francis/Frank Black, Joey Santiago and Dave Lovering signed off on a statement that detailed Kim's decision and thanked her for her enduring contribution to the band during the good and the bad times. It read; "We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best."

Kim meanwhile is still on course to continue touring with her band The Breeders, who she formed during the break-up of the Pixies in the early 90's (the band eventually split in 1993 before getting back together for a series of tours in 2004). Deal co-founded The Breeders with her twin sister Kelley and is currently touring on the back of the 20th anniversary of their first album, Last Splash.
