Wayne Rooney "really struggled" after wife Coleen suffered a miscarriage with their first baby.
The Manchester United legend and his wife lost a child shortly after getting married in 2008, and she has now revealed her husband's heartbreaking reaction to their loss.
Speaking on the 'Happy Mum Happy Baby' podcast, she recalled him saying: "I know it’s hard for you but it’s hard for me as well.”
She admitted: "It wasn’t till he said that to me that I realised, ‘You’re right, it is, you wanted the baby just as much, if not more than me’.
“Wayne really struggled with it, and that’s where I feel like I need to say it’s not all about the women.
“We need to take care of the men as well, because I do feel like they get forgotten about a lot.”
Coleen, now 37, explained that they had told their parents about her pregnancy but "unfortunately didn't get to" their 12-week scan.
She had experienced bleeding and lost their baby after trips to the hospital, and she was concerned about whether or not she could have children due to fertility issues in her family.
Although she spoke to her own mother about the tragic situation, it was something the couple "kept really quiet".
She explained: "This is the first time ever I’ve spoken publicly about it.
“We’d just been married, it was a happy time, we wanted a family but it didn’t work out. It has now.”
Coleen - who has sons Kai, 14, Klay, 10, Kit, seven, and Cass, five, with Wayne - suffered another miscarriage between Kit and Klay, and she has wondered if she's unable to "carry girls".
She said: “I went on to have another miscarriage between my second and third [son], and then I began to wonder, ‘Can I not carry girls?’. That was something that does play on my mind.”
