Whoopi Goldberg doesn't want a relationship but does enjoy "hit and run" hook-ups.

The 'Sister Act' actress - who was married to Alvin Martin, the father of her daughter Alexandrea, 51, for six years, David Claessen for two years and Lyle Trachtenberg for just a year - admitted she is "fundamentally a selfish person" and is too busy with her family to want to accommodate sharing her life with anyone else, but she's happy to enjoy brief flings.

Speaking on 'The Don Lemon Show', she said: “I am fundamentally a selfish person and I’ve found that because I have a wonderful kid and a son-in-law and three grandkids and one great-grand[kid], that I don’t have time for a whole lot of other people coming into my life.

“Hit and runs are great, I don’t mind those. But, you can’t spend the night.”

Asked if the hook-ups "still happen", the 68-year-old star exclaimed: "Oh yeah!"

The 'View' presenter had to give herself "permission" to explore her feelings because of the stigma surrounding her wish not to have a traditional relationship or to marry again.

She said: “You have this whole line of words that are stacked up in your head about what you are if you say a hit and run is where you want to be and you don’t want to be married."

Whoopi felt like she was trying to figure out marriage because she could see how it made other people happy, but some advice from her mother made her come to terms with her own approach.

She said: "What I didn’t realise was that I had figured it out.

"I just was surprised by the fact that I didn’t really want it, but I liked to hit and run. And my mother said, well maybe you should just throw a party from now and on and not get married anymore."

And the 'Color Purple' star simply feels she doesn't want the "give or take" of marriage.

She said: “It requires a lot. I want to see you when I see you and then you go.”
