After buying the rights to Bozo, David Arquette has declared he’s on a “mission” to make the world give clowns a “second chance”.
David Arquette is on a “mission” to make the world give clowns a “second chance”.
The ‘Scream’ actor, 52, bought the rights to Bozo the Clown in 2022 and thinks clowns have been demonised for years thanks to horror movies such as ‘It’ and the appearance of Twisty the Clown in ‘American Horror Story’.
He told Page Six about his determination to rebrand the circus entertainers from creepy monsters to joyful comedians: “There’s more good clowns out there than there are scary clowns, despite what kind of films are being made.
“I love clowns in general. And if you find clowns creepy, you should give them a second shot.
“We’re on a mission to sort of bring joy back to the world and sort of shine a light on happy clowns and Bozo is one of the happiest.”
David’s Instagram is filled with images and videos of him in clown costumes and showing off circus memorabilia.
He has brought Bozo into the 21st century by introducing Joz Bozo, the first female Bozo the Clown.
David added about his rebrand of the famous character: “It’s a lot of work (and we’re) still figuring it out.
“I’ve made a lot of mistakes in the portrayal of Bozo but we’ve gotten to a really good place.”
David also said he has met “the foremost Bozo collector and historian” for a documentary they’re making together.
The father-of-three has daughter Coco, who turned 20 on Saturday (13.07.24), with his ‘Friends’ actress ex Courteney Cox, 60, as well as sons Charlie and Augustus with his second wife Christina McLarty, who he married in 2015.
He will be appearing as Bozo in Nashville on 21 July for a city-wide baby shower for families affected by gun violence.
