The actress loved the unexpected twists and turns of the movie.
A remake of the 1990 thriller, Flatliners stars Ellen Page as a medical school student who gets her friends to participate in an experiment exploring what happens after death. Of course, things don't go as planned. The actress says that she took the role because her character, Courtney, is a complex psychological mess.

"She's a woman with profound pain, grief, remorse and regret," Page says. "It's hard for her to really care about anyone because she's suffering so much, so she's willing to do such a risky experiment. And it cracks her open and makes her look at all those parts of herself, and that's hard! But it's what we have to do. And I think a lot of people can relate to the fear of contracting those difficult emotions."

When medical student Courtney Homes approaches fellow student Jamie with the an intriguing prospect of 'having fun tonight', Jamie could never have guessed what he was getting himself in for. He accepts the request and Courtney tells him to travel down into the basement facility at midnight.
The time arrives and Jamie is finally made aware of Courtney's plan. She asks Jamie to stop her heart for precisely one minute and then bring her back to the land of the living. Jamie's far from convinced that it's a good idea but hears out her plan anyway. Courtney's obsessed with finding out what happens to humans after we die and she's convinced that she'll be able to track it using some high spec medical equipment able to document brain activity.
Reluctantly Jamie accepts Courtney's proposal and they begin their experiment. She's hooked up to multiple machines and Jamie slows her heart down until it finally makes its last beat. Once Courtney is brought back around she tries to explain what she's experienced and compares it to being in the presence of pure energy. What neither of the students knew was that their little experiment would have a lasting impact of their lives. It appears that Courtney has been given a new gift, she's now able to perfectly play the piano, and the other students involved think that she's been "rewired" and made an even better form of who she previously was.

Ellen Page has become a better actress since coming out as gay.
The 29-year-old actress revealed her sexuality to the world during a speech at the Human Rights Campaign's 'Time to Thrive' conference in Las Vegas in February 2014 and believes she's more ''in love'' with her job since she declared her true self to the world.
In an interview with the Metro newspaper she was asked if coming out has helped her acting, to which she replied: ''Yes, one hundred per cent. I feel more excited and inspired and in love with my job than I ever have and I think a huge part of that is having your authentic self be aligned with your creative self.''

They're all openly gay, but you might not know it with some of them.
Ian McKellen has offered his own opinion about diversity in Hollywood following the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. He believes that it's not only black people who are being overlooked in the film industry, but gay actors too; especially since straight stars have indeed won Oscars for playing gay men (Tom Hanks, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Sean Penn) but never the other way round.
It is more frequent than one first might believe that gay people in the acting world are often playing straight roles - sometimes exclusively - and there are very few who have found themselves playing only gay characters. Here are just a few gay stars who've played gay roles in their careers:
There's a lot more natural beauty out there than you think.

Ellen Page has spoken out over Matt Damon’s comments regarding sexuality.
In September Damon told The Guardian, “Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play.” The Martian star also added that believes it’s still “really hard for actors to be out publicly” in Hollywood.
Laurel Hester and Stacie Andree couldn't be more different. While the former is a highly respected New Jersey police detective with decades of experience in the force, the latter is 20 years younger with less of an established career. Hester's always been cautious about relationships due to her struggles with privacy, but she had no idea how much her life would be thrust into the spotlight when she fell for Andree. The couple had barely settled down in beautiful home, wistfully contemplating their future dreams when Hester was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Not only did Andree face losing the love of her life, but also her home and the life they had built together. Straight couples could get married and leave their spouse with their pension benefits after they'd passed, but this privilege is denied to Hester and Andree simply because they are a same-sex couple. With the support of gay Jewish activist named Steven Goldstein, they put their all into achieving equal rights for everyone.

Laurel Hester is a high-ranking New Jersey police detective who is hugely respected at work. While she never fails to earn recognition for her police services, she also manages to catch the eye of a young woman almost 20 years her senior. Stacie Andree's career is less high-flying but the pair find themselves connecting over their shared idyllic fantasies of a home and true love. However, their dreams are about to be shattered when Hester is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, but she wishes to soften the blow by passing on her pension benefits to her Andree, so that she can afford to continue living in their new home. However, under Ocean County laws this is not possible for domestic partners - only married couples, and this is pre-marriage equality reforms. The couple implore the New Jersey Board of Chosen Freeholders to help sort this issue out, but as Hester grows ever weaker, it seems they're running out of time. With the help of Hester's supportive colleague Dane Wells and a gay Jewish activist named Steven Goldstein (the founder of Garden State Equality), they set out to defend the rights of same-sex couples across the state.
