American filmmaker Justin Lin, known for directing several 'Fast & Furious' instalments, is reportedly set to take the helm of the third film in the rebooted 'Star Trek' franchise after writer and producer Roberto Orci dropped out from directing the flick in early December.

The first two movies in the Paramount, SkyDance Productions and Bad Robot 'Star Trek' franchise were directed by J.J. Abrams, who decided not return for the third in order to take the helm of the new 'Star Wars' film.

However, as Deadline reported, Abrams and Orci will still remain as producers for the upcoming 'Star Trek' flick.

The short list of acclaimed directors to replace Orci even included English filmmaker Edgar Wright, but Lin is much more suited for the gig as he is no stranger to dealing with lots of action and billion-dollar blockbusters.

The 43-year-old directed the third, fourth and sixth 'Fast & Furious' films, which included 'The Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift,' 'Fast and Furious' and 'Fast & Furious 6,' before James Wan was announced as his replacement for the upcoming 'Furious 7.' Lin's efforts to the street car racing franchise earned more than $1.3 billion at the box office worldwide.

Despite his vast experience, Lin will still have big shoes to fill as Abrams' 'Star Trek' and the sequel 'Star Trek Into Darkness' grossed more than $853 million at the box office worldwide between the two of them.

The third 'Star Trek' movie is due out sometime in 2016.
