Based on the comic book series of the same name by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, the film is about a high schooler named Light Turner who embarks on a crusade of death when he discovers an ominous notebook with supernatural powers. The book is called Death Note, and cites that any person whose name is written in the pages will be led to an untimely death.

Drunk on his newfound omnipotent power, Light uses the artifact to kill all those he believes deserve it, with the intention of becoming something of a vigilante, cleaning the streets of crime. However, his campaign of murder is thrown into scrutiny by a mysterious detective known only as L, who is hell-bent on stopping Light and parting him from his beloved relic.

The Netflix Original Movie stars Nat Wolff, who is best known for the movies 'Paper Towns' and 'Fault In Our Stars'. He will be joined by Lakeith Stanfield ('Atlanta', 'Straight Outta Compton') as L and Willem Dafoe ('John Wick', 'The Grand Budapest Hotel') as the voice of Ryuk - a godlike entity that is invoked by the use of the book. Shea Whigham ('Kong: Skull Island', 'The Wolf of Wall Street') and Margaret Qualley ('The Leftovers', 'The Nice Guys') play the characters James Turner and Mia Sutton.

Directed by the award-winning Adam Wingard ('The Guest', 'You're Next') and written by Charley Parlapanides and Vlas Parlapanides ('Immortals') alongside Jeremy Slater ('The Exorcist', 'The Lazarus Effect'), the announcement of 'Death Note' has received something of a lukewarm reception by some people accusing writers of 'whitewashing' a Japanese story. Which is probably not the most appropriate term when Lakeith Stanfield plays one of the lead characters. Regardless of this, people are comparing it to 'Ghost in the Shell' - a film that has also received backlash for its casting of Scarlett Johansson.

'Death Note' is set to arrive on Netflix on August 25th 2017.
