Yes, Gary LeVox did lip sync, but he had a good excuse.
Say it ain’t so – Rascal Flatts, those beacons of country music, have admitted to lip syncing at Sunday’s Academy of Country Music Awards. Well, one of them has, at least. According to TMZ, the trio have admitted to faking their performance at the awards – badly – but they had a legitimate reason. The country group told TMZ that their lead singer, Gary LeVox, lost his voice just before the gig. He had performed several shows last week and put too much strain on his pipes.
This has never happened before, so maybe LeVox should get a free pass this time?
However, the band still didn’t want to disappoint fans at the ACM ceremony, which is why they decided to cheat just a little. They performed their single Rewind - with just a little help from the sound system. Fans in the audience didn’t buy it for a second, however. Tweets about the lip sync quickly popped up, but fans weren’t as disappointed as one might expect. In fact, many were defending the country group.

In Ellen's words, congratulations on this wonderful pineapple award!
Last night’s CMAs were definitely surprising in more ways than one – it was a rookies’ night through and through, with first time winners dominating the list, for starters. More than that though, let’s talk about the fate of one emotional blonde lady in particular: Taylor Swift, who surprised everyone by… not winning. We’re as surprised as you are, but everyone’s favorite country girl went somewhat overlooked by the Country Music Association.
Swift accepted the award in a gorgeous red gown.
Well, that’s not entirely true. Of course Swift received a huge honor when she was announced as the second ever laureate of the Pinnacle award, which is arguably the highest honor bestowed by the Country Music Association, especially considering that Swift is only 23 and just on her fourth studio album. Considering that the only other winner of the Pinnacle Award has been Garth Brooks in 2005… well, you get the picture. It’s a pretty big deal.

The 2012 CMT Country Music Awards took place on Monday (December 3, 2012) in Nashville but this year, the winners will be kept top secret until Saturday December 8, when the star-studded show will be broadcast at 10pm on CMT. The 90 minute special will be hosted by Rascal Flatts and Hayden Panettiere and will feature performances from some of country music’s biggest stars, as well as appearances from a number of A-list sports and entertainment stars.
Amongst those treading the boards for the illustrious awards show were Jason Aldean, Lady Antebellum, Kenny Chesney and Sheryl Crow and also making an appearance on the night were the Academy Award winning actor Morgan Freeman, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Sammy Hagar, Metallica’s James Hetfield, the shock-rocker Kid Rock and Miranda Lambert. From the world of sport, the Atlanta Braves’ Chipper Jones put in an appearance, as did the Nashville Predators’ Mike Fisher.
This is the first year that CMT have kept the lid on the list of honorees. As a result, country music fans will have to wait until the weekend if they want a slice of the action, when the 90-minute special is aired. According to CMT’s press release, the show will be “the most exclusive gathering of country music superstars of the year and celebrates the class of 2012 with an incredible evening of wall-to-wall performances and special appearances from others in entertainment.”
