Meryl Streep Toasts Emma Thompson And Roasts Walt Disney

Meryl Streep Emma Thompson Walt Disney

Meryl Streep has been a self-professed feminist throughout her career and she walked the walk on during Tuesday night’s National Board of Review gala in New York. The August: Osage County actress took the stage to present her colleague and friend Emma Thompson with the Best Actress award for her role in Saving Mr. Banks and in the process ripped into Walt Disney for his sexist and racist tendencies.

Streep used the National Board of Review platform to express some controversial opinions.

A transcript of her speech has been obtained by Entertainment Weekly. In her ten minute address, Streep said: "Some of his associates reported that Walt Disney didn't really like women... Disney, who brought joy arguably to billions of people was, perhaps, or had some racist proclivities. He formed and supported an anti-Semitic industry lobbying group and he was certainly, on the evidence of his company's policies, a gender bigot...”

Diane Disney Miller Dies, Aged 79

Walt Disney

Diane Disney Miller, the daughter of Walt Disney, has died at her home in Napa, California, following complications to her health acquired during a fall in September. The frail 79-year-old's death was confirmed late yesterday (19 Nov.) by a close family friend, Richard Greene, to the Los Angeles Times, with the only insight into her death relating to her September fall.

Diane has remained in close proximity to her home since September, when she was last seen in public at the 10th anniversary gala to commemorate the opening of the Walt Disney Concert Hall inn Los Angeles. Diane was incredibly vocal and influential in the design and construction of the building that bares her father's name, and it is the result of but one of her many philanthropic gestures from over the years.

“I wanted something that would bear my father’s name, that would come from his wealth but not be commercial,” she said at the September gala. “That would be just a wonderful thing for the city, for the spirit, for the soul. I think we achieved that.”

Pixar's 'The Good Dinosaur' Delayed Until 2015 After Losing Director

Walt Disney

Walt Disney Pictures have delayed yet another movie, with the latest victim being Pixar film 'The Good Dinosaur'. Disney have pushed it back nearly 18 months from a slated release date of May 30th 2014 to the new November 25th 2015 release date.

'Pirates of The Caribbean 5' also suffered from the same fate as the adventure epic is set for a delayed release date in summer 2016.

This leaves Pixar without a film release in 2014, with 2005 being the last time the world of cinema saw a year without a Pixar film.

Walt Disney Sued By Stan Lee Media Over Marvel Character Rights

Stan Lee Walt Disney

An internet company co-founded by Marvel comic character creator Stan Lee is attempting to sue Walt Disney Co. for several billion dollars.

Stan Lee Media closed down over 10 years ago but are now claiming that they were contracted all of the rights to Lee’s creations (including for Spider-Man, X-Men and some of the Avengers) in 1998 despite the fact that Lee also assigned rights to the Marvel comic book company that was then bought by Disney. The 10-page complaint reads: ‘The true facts are that Stan Lee Media Inc. owns the copyrights to Stan Lee's creations. Accordingly, Stan Lee Media Inc. is entitled to the billions of dollars of profits that have been kept by Defendant Disney.’

The company claims that their contract with Lee surpasses Marvel’s because it took place first and Disney didn’t record Marvel and Lee’s agreement publicly with US Copyright Office. A spokeswoman for Walt Disney Co. made a statement to the LA Times earlier today in an email which read: ‘This lawsuit is without merit, it arises out of the same core facts and legal claims that have been rejected by three federal district court judges.’ However, there has been no response so far from Stan Lee’s representative.

Disney Phenomenon High School Musical To Hit West End Stage

Disney Ashley Tisdale Walt Disney Zac Efron

Disney's hit film High School Musical is to be transformed into a West End stage show, it has been confirmed.

The musical will open with a ten-week run at London's Hammersmith Apollo in June, though the actors stepping into the shoes of Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale are yet to be cast.

Some 250 million viewers have watched High School Musical since its 2006 debut, according to Disney, with the soundtracks for the first film in the franchise and its subsequent sequel becoming global best sellers.

Based on the plot of the first TV movie, the stage show will tell of high school couple Troy and Gabriella, a mismatched pair from different social groups who try out for the lead parts in the school musical.

Commenting on the confirmation of the London show, Disney spokesman Steve Fickinger said: "I think the reason High School Musical has been so successful is that kids really enjoy aspirational stories.

"Like Buzz Lightyear saving the day or Cinderella going to the ball, kids can really relate to that."

The announcement of the ten-week London run comes as the box office opens for the 31-date High School Musical UK tour.

Some £9 million worth of advance tickets have already been sold for the touring production, which begins this week in Bromley, south London.

A third instalment in the record-breaking High School Musical franchise was confirmed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Productions earlier this month.

After the smash success of the first two TV movies, High School Musical 3: Senior Year is to be given a cinema release, making its Stateside bow on October 24th.

As well as launching the careers of leads Efron and Hudgens, the franchise has spawned a staggeringly popular range of merchandise.

Swiss Family Robinson Review

OK
This family doesn't seem very Swiss to me, and I don't think there are elephants and tigers on remote islands in the South Seas, but while Walt Disney's early Survivor experience lacks in realism, it's also not nearly as wholesome as it pretends to be.

The movie jumps right into the story, with the family's ship being chased into a storm and running aground, all but sunk. What follows is the all-too-familiar story of survival, as our castaways create a hut (treehouses in this case), attempt to kill every form of wildlife that appears even remotely threatening, and facing off against pirates, all while maintaining an appropriate level of late 1950s decorum, with nary an undone button or brooch clip.

Cinderella Review

Excellent
She talks to birds, lives in a secluded room, and makes little outfits for mice. What a wacko.

Nah, just kidding. We're talking about Cinderella, one of history's most beloved fairy tale characters, and an early star of Disney's animated feature canon, brought to life in this 1950 classic. In Disney history, Cinderella is a transition of sorts: the first major release in eight years (late-'40s titles like Make Mine Music are not as timeless), it kicked off a string of major successes that line home video shelves now, decades later. Business and legacy aside, what little girl doesn't love the magic of this movie?

Mary Poppins Review

Excellent
Parents, you have a responsibility. Your kids should not know Julie Andrews just from the two Princess Diaries movies. Luckily, you have an opportunity since Mary Poppins, the movie that landed Andrews an Oscar and made her a star 40 years ago, has just been released on DVD for its 40th anniversary.

Andrews is just perfect in the title role, a mystical nanny who literally falls from the London sky and into the lives of two lonely children in 1910. The kids desperately need some kind of attention. Their father (David Tomlinson) is a workaholic, brown-nosing banker, who treats his kids as two obstacles in keeping an orderly home. Mom (Glynis Johns) is no better, a dingbat who prefers supporting social causes to spending time with her kids. Funny how little things have changed, huh?
