Breaking Bad has won five of the nine categories in the Primetime Emmy Drama Awards. The series, which finished its run last year, dominated this section of the awards and won the award for Outstanding Drama Series amongst others. Here is a quick analysis of each drama category.
The Primetime Emmy Awards were held on Monday evening (25th August) in Los Angeles and there was stiff competition in every category although the results were ultimately highly predictable.

Here's a quick rundown of the winners, nominees and a brief analysis for the drama section of the Primetime Emmy Awards 2014:
Outstanding Drama Series - Breaking Bad
Breaking Bad was a fairly safe bet as typically the Emmys do honour highly successful shows for their final season and no show has been quite as successful or raved about as Breaking Bad. The series won the award over the likes of Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Mad Men and True Detective.
Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series - Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife)
She's been nominated four times in this category so it's not surprising Julianna Margulies won the award for her portrayal as Alicia Florrick on the hit CBS legal drama The Good Wife. It's the second time Margulies has won the Primetime Emmy Award for her role on the show and she beat off stiff competition including Robin Wright (House of Cards), Claire Danes (Homeland), Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex).
True Detective's Woody Harrelson or Matthew Mcconaughey both lost out to Bryan Cranston.
Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series - Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad)
Competition in this category could not have been fiercer with three heavyweight Hollywood actors vying with icons of television for this year's award. In the end, it was fairly predictable with Bryan Cranston taking the award home for his role on Breaking Bad as Walter White. It's slightly surprising neither True Detective's Woody Harrelson or Matthew McConaughey won as their roles have been critically acclaimed. Kevin Spacey's portrayal as Francis Underwood in House of Cards was also a strong contender. However, considering this is the last opportunity Cranston will have to win an award for his role as Walter White, it is fitting.
Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series -Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad)
Yet another victory for Breaking Bad, something which was to become a common theme throughout the evening, with Anna Gunn winning the award for her portrayal of Walter White's wife, Skyler. The other nominees included two actresses from British drama Downton Abbey, Maggie Smith and Joanne Froggatt, and another British actress Lena Headey from Game of Thrones. Christina Baranski (The Good Wife) and Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) also lost out to Gunn.
