Is Netflix's 'Outlaw King' Starring Chris Pine The New 'Braveheart'?

Chris Pine

This week, the epic trailer for forthcoming Netflix movie 'Outlaw King' dropped, reteaming Chris Pine with his 'Hell or High Water' director David Mackenzie. It's a similar premise to the classic historical tale 'Braveheart', but focuses instead on another nobleman who spent more than two decades on the Scottish throne.

Forget William Wallace, this is the story of the real medieval King of Scots, Robert the Bruce, who led an army against the English invasion during the First War of Scottish Independence. Chris Pine plays the legendary outlaw; a nobleman who took the Scottish throne almost a year after Wallace's execution.

Stefano Sollima Wants Tom Hardy And Chris Pine If He Directs 'Call Of Duty' Movie

Tom Hardy Chris Pine

Stefano Sollima isn't afraid to aim high when it comes to casting for any potential 'Call Of Duty' movie he gets to work his magic on. Based on the video game series of the same name, the film is currently just rumoured to be going to Sollima when Activision Blizzard set their plans into motion, but that hasn't stopped the filmmaker from discussing the future if he does indeed get to jump on board.

Though he didn't reference 'Call Of Duty' directly, the fact that both Tom Hardy and Chris Pine have played roles as soldiers or captains in the past, with 'Band of Brothers' and 'Wonder Woman' respectively, probably means that he has them in mind if he gets to bring the video game to the big screen.

A Wrinkle in Time Trailer

Time is an extraordinarily complicated thing which does not always behave in the way you might expect. In fact, 13-year-old Meg Murry (Storm Reid), her brother Charles (Deric McCabe) and her friend Calvin (Levi Miller) are about to discover that there's a lot more to the universe in which they live than they could possibly have imagined.

Haunted by the mysterious disappearance of her scientist father Alex (Chris Pine), Meg finds herself at the home of three women named Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Which (Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey); women who may seem like ordinary neighbours at first, but are in fact supernatural beings with the ability to transport themselves through time and space.

They offer to send the children to space so that Meg can seek out her father, and find out what's really out there. Unfortunately, there's a darkness that has engulfed Mr Murry, and it is threatening to consume the entire universe. Meg is the only person with the ability to bring the light back, so she must release her inner warrior and be braver and smarter than she's ever had to be before.

Wonder Woman Review

Excellent

Boldly optimistic, this action-packed adventure breathes fresh life into the DC universe with a welcome balance of comedy, flirtation and a sense of righteous justice. And at the centre, Gal Gadot is a hugely engaging hero with a refreshing moral clarity to her actions. So even if the movie dissolves into the usual murky digital mayhem in its final act, there's a bright light at the centre that holds us in its grip.

While the Great War rages in Europe, life carries on as usual on the secret island home of the Amazons, where Diana (Gadot) has been raised by her mother Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) and trained by her aunt General Antiope (Robin Wright). When American spy Steve (Chris Pine) crash-lands there, Diana quickly agrees to return with him to war-torn Europe, track down God of War Aries and put an end to the fighting for good. Awed by her fighting prowess and skimpy outfit, Steve agrees to take her. They return to London to confront a smug politician (David Thewlis) and assemble a team so they can return to the front on a mission to take down the nefarious German General Ludendorff (Danny Huston) and his chemical weapons scientist Maru (Elena Anaya). But Diana is still looking for Aries.

Director Patty Jenkins tells this story like an old-fashioned war epic, following a rag-tag group of good guys as they go through a series of battles on their way to the big confrontation. Along the way, there's plenty of comedy banter, dark emotion and even some lusty romance. Putting a woman at the centre of the action gives the movie a strongly resonant slant, especially because she's surrounded by men who always underestimate her.

Diana Prince is one of the Amazon warriors of Themyscira, a tribe of women with extraordinary power. There is no-one quite as extraordinary, however, as Diana herself. After being shown the noble Sword of Athena as a young girl, our heroine becomes determined to be the one who wields it, training in all areas of combat. When her incredible powers start to shine through, her mother Hippolyta does not want to tell her the truth about her creation. As oblivious as she is to the secrets of her birthright, she becomes determined to save the world after rescuing a marooned military pilot named Steve Trevor. When he informs her of the danger that her kind faces, she insists on going with him to win the war and save the world. Of course, London is hardly the place she wants to be, but she finds new friendships in Steve and his quirky secretary Etta Candy.

Hell Or High Water Review

Excellent

Sicario screenwriter Taylor Sheridan delivers another fiercely intelligent, engaging story that maintains high suspense while grappling meaningfully with some very big topics. Set in present-day America, it's a story for today's social climate, but it feels like a classic Western in the way a pair of desperado bank robbers are pursued by a sly detective. It's also beautifully directed and skilfully acted to pull the audience all the way in.

In rural Texas, Tanner (Ben Foster) has just been released from prison when he agrees to help his brother Toby (Chris Pine) stage a series of small bank robberies to earn enough cash to guarantee a future for Toby's sons. Their mother has only recently died, and both are feeling a sense of pointlessness about life, willing to risk everything for a shot at something. But while Toby plans the heists carefully, Tanner is a hothead who continually attracts attention. Sure enough, Ranger Marcus (Jeff Bridges) catches their scent, working with his loyal but sarcastic partner Alberto (Gil Birmingham) to try to get one step ahead of the crimes. And since he's not looking forward to his impending retirement, Marcus is in no hurry.

Thankfully, director David Mackenzie (Starred Up) is in no hurry either, steadily building the suspense with each step in the story, keeping the focus tightly on the characters. This means that several scenes are breathlessly intense. There are so many intriguing things going on here that the film nearly bursts with resonance, from the old-versus-new world themes to the economic reality that has put Toby in this mess to begin with, and the corporate greed that's offering him a way out. Pine and Foster are perfectly cast in these roles, and both deliver layered performances that suggest at a more complex back-story than the one we learn. Opposite them, Bridges is the picture of calm, a terrific role that he seems to glide through effortlessly. But this is a carefully gauged performance that nails the tricky balance between tenacity, intelligence and grit.

Star Trek Beyond has topped the US box office on its opening weekend, taking $59.9m. The film had one of best US openings of summer to date, however it failed to match the opening of Star Trek: Into Darkness which debuted with $70m in 2013.

The first film in the rebooted franchise, Star Trek, had scored even better when it opened in 2009, taking $75m. But Star Trek Beyond’s $59.9m was enough to knock off last week’s number one, The Secret Life of Pets, which fell to number two after taking $29.3m.

Margot Robbie's character thinks she's the only survivor until she meets Chiwetel Ejiofor's scientist. She says she was continually put into awkward positions during filming. "Just delving into it deeper," she says. "And I guess, for this role specifically, I tried to remember how I behaved when I was a younger teenager. I didn't know how to act cool around guys or how to regain some sort of power if somebody told me off. Those were the things I was trying to focus on this character."

For his part, Ejiofor had to react "delicately" to reveal his character's insecurity. "It all felt very real," he says of the relationship dynamic. "Craig can breathe life into the relationships of a very small number of people kind of effortlessly!"
