American comedy drama Nurse Jackie is to return for one final season.
Sad news for fans of the American dark comedy 'Nurse Jackie': the satirical hospital drama will be ending with its next season. Starring Sopranos alumni Edie Falco, the drama has been on the air since 2009 and follows the life of Nurse Jackie Peyton, an emergency department nurse at All Saints' Hospital in New York City who also has a mild addiction to prescription drugs.
Edie Falco has played Nurse Jackie since 2009
Since it began on television channel Showtime, 'Nurse Jackie' has received widespread praise from critics and maintained a strong viewership in the US. It initially aired on BBC Two in the UK, but moved to Sky Atlantic in 2011. The show has received multiple awards over the years, including an Emmy for Edie Falco in 2010 and nominations even as recently as this year, and will be bowing out whilst still proving a strong contender in the ratings.
David Nevins, President of Showtime, spoke highly of Falco and promised that the final season of the show will not disappoint the loyal fanbase that the show has attracted. "Edie is one of our finest actresses. We are so honored to have had her on the network. She creates indelible characters and Nurse Jackie Peyton is no exception. I know this final season will bring her story to a close that will satisfy the ever-growing number of loyal viewers who have been entranced and, at times, appalled by Jackie through the years. I want to thank Edie, the incredible cast and Clyde Phillips and Richie Jackson who have led the show to the success that it is today."
The final season of 'Nurse Jackie' will air in 2015, with 'Monk' star Tony Shalhoub joining the cast.
