'Gangnam Style' Breaks YouTube

Psy

After Kim Kardashian’s nude photo session, it seems that the internet has been broken again. Quite literally, this time: the music video for ‘Gangnam Style’ has broken YouTube’s view counter.

South Korean musician Psy released the single in July 2012 and, powered by YouTube, it rapidly conquered the world with its signature dance routine, racking up hundreds of millions of views. It was such a cultural phenomenon that world leaders and politicians were perfectly happy to make fools of themselves copying the dance, and it became the first video to exceed one billion views.

Everything That's Wrong With The Snoop Dogg And Psy Collaboration "Hangover"

Snoop Dogg Psy Miley Cyrus Nelly Tim Mcgraw Jimmy Kimmel

In one of the oddest collaborations since Nelly gave country artist Tim Mcgraw a call and asked to bring his Louisiana drawl to the R&B track “Over And Over”, Snoop Dogg has teamed up with South Korean viral success Psy to unleash the track “Hangover” upon the world. It’s not the first time the G-funk master has produced a piece of work with an artist from disparate corners of the music world. He has previously teamed up with Miley Cyrus for the track “Ashtrays and Heartbreaks” during the rapper’s ill-conceived stint as adopting the Rastafarian lifestyle under the moniker of Snoop Lion.

Snoop Dogg at TAO nightclubSnoop Dogg and Psy's collaboration has been widely attacked by both of their respective fans.

Debuting in the US on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the video attained over 3.5 million views in 24 hours and currently boasts viewing figures of almost 25 million. But such figures are small fry for K-pop megastar Psy, who has become the first artist to break the 2 billion mark on Youtube. The video itself depicts Snoop and Psy trying various purported South Korean cures for the after effects of excessive inebriation, as well as their clips from their hedonistic exploits from the day before. As for the music itself, it contains all the tropes of Psy’s previous opus- blaring synthesizers and a skewed chorus hook designed to burrow into your brain and resolutely refuse to leave.

We may have all gotten over it now, but the furore surrounding Norwegian comedy duo Ylvis when they released 'The Fox (What Does It Say)' held out long enough to ensure that they easily walked away with the top ranking video of the year. The novelty hit was shared across the web and has managed to amass more than 275 million views since it was uploaded to YouTube in September.

The YouTube Music Awards will celebrate the achievements made online by both well-known and some more obscure (outside the world of viral videos) musicians for the first time this Sunday (3 Oct.) and the organisers have pulled out all the stops to make sure that the awards show starts with a bang. In fact, the awards show will be so extravagant that the man in charge of bringing it to life - Spike Jonze - doesn't even know what to expect.

Spike Jonze (L) and Jason Schwartzman (R) are in control of the night in their respective roles

Jonze, the director of countless award-winning music videos such as Weezer's 'Buddy Holly' and 'Sabotage' by The Beastie Boys, has been brought in as creative director of the event, tasked with making the awards show one to remember and one to challenge the established musical showcases, such as the MTV VMAs. Alongside fellow music video veteran Chris Milk and executive producers Vice Media and Sunset Lane Entertainment, Jonze isn't planning on making a showcase that can be easily compared to the VMAs or the Billboard Awards, for example, as they are going for a completely unique take on the tried and tested music awards ceremony.

Radio Ga-Gangnam: Psy And Queen's Brian May To Collaborate?

Brian May Psy

Speaking in an interview with Radio 1's Scott Mills, Psy revealed he'd set up a brunch-date with the fuzzy haired guitarist, who played alongside Freddie Mercury in the 70s/80s rock band, Queen.

Describing himself as a "really huge fan" of Queen, Psy revealed he was going to have brunch with May yesterday (11th June).

When asked if the pair were meeting with a view to working together, Psy - real name Park Jae-sang - said "Seems like it. I don't know, I'm just going to eat tomorrow, but I'm super excited. The band was an inspiration to me since I was 14 or 15 until now."

Heidi Klum Mobbed By Half-Nude Women's Rights Demonstrators

Heidi Klum Psy Bruno Mars

Heidi Klum was mobbed by equal rights protestors bearing Heidi Hate messages across their naked torsos during a crucial moment on 'Germany's Next Top Model' yesterday (May 31st 2013).

The supermodel was about to name the winner of the modelling competition on live television when two topless female demonstrators for FEMEN burst onto the stage to shout at her with the angry message on their chests reading 'Heidi Horror Picture Show'. The organisation they were rallying for was a Ukrainian group who regularly coordinate naked and topless campaigns in defence of equality between men and women. Though the incident was cut from the live recording, Heidi kept her cool and quipped to the audience, 'I have just been seeing boobies in front of me. Too bad it happened at this special moment!'

The protestors seemed to be the only ones who disliked Heidi, however, with 'Gangnam Style' rapper Psy Tweeting a picture of the two of them with the caption: '[Heidi Klum] stoped by my green room and said "ThankU psy". She's so beautiful & nice at the same time!! #Unfair lol'. Heidi also Tweeted a photo of herself and Bruno Mars saying, 'Thank you for a great performance on my show last night in Germany [Bruno Mars] You are a really cool dude!'

Will The Real Psy Please Stand Up? Fraud Exposed At Cannes! [Pictures]

Psy

It looks like Psy has a mimic, with the South Korean rapper denying his alleged apperance at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival despite there being several photos of the star apparently showing his face.

The South Korean star has an ample fanbase after the video for his track 'Gangnam Style' went viral, earning it the title of most viewed video on YouTube and the first to reach 1 billion views. It's no surprise then that people are after a slice of his global glory as one look-a-like decided to use his appearance to blag his way on to the red carpet alongside an entourage of fake security. Nobody seemed to suspect a thing and many fans and fellow celebrities stopped to have their photo taken with him.

However, when the star took to Twitter, there was to be a lot of red faces of those who had let themselves be duped: 'seems like there's another ME at cannes...say Hi to him @scooterbraun lol #PSYinSINGAPORE', he wrote to his followers revealing that he was, in fact, pretty much on the other side of the world. He later revealed that his manager Scooter Braun was not fooled, posting a snap of the imposter with the caption: 'Here the picture of #fakePSYinCannes spotted by @scooterbraun!! Lol #realPSYinSingapore'. Awkward!

Psy Gets Beat Out By Rival In Korea, Still Riding High In The US

Psy

Is it possible for Psy’s new song, "Gentleman", to fail to reach the success of "Gangnam Style"? Of course it’s possible, after all, viral fame is hard to achieve and almost impossible to duplicate. Nobody thought that Psy’s dethronement would happen this soon though. "Gentleman" has already been bumped off the top Korean charts and by a 63-year old singer, no less! Both the daily and the weekly charts show the veteran’s success, with his songs occupying the top ten places in the daily chart (Psy is number 13) and a top spot in the weekly lineup, while Psy chills at number two.

Cho Yong-pil has been a staple of Korean pop and electronic music since the mid-70s, so he probably has a thing or two to teach young’un Psy. And while our favorite “Gentleman” is still trending stateside, not only was his single bumped off the Korean chart by the catchy "Bounce", but his album was also knocked off by Cho Yong-pill’s record, which currently holds first place in the album chart. If you’d like to see what all the fuss around Yong-pill’s song is about, you can catch the video for it below.

Hope isn’t lost for Psy though. Stateside, "Gentleman" moved up to fifth place on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. The video has also racked up over 220 million views on YouTube after breaking the record for first-day views for music videos. Then again, was there ever any doubt that it would.

The Moment Has Arrived: Psy Releases New Song 'Gentleman' [Listen]

Psy

So what do you think of it? Not great huh? We're talking about Psy's follow up to Gangnam Style of course. The new single 'Gentleman' features what's being described as a "pulsating rhythm" similar to what you'd find in the dance clubs of Seoul. The Korean/English lyrics are catchy enough, but we're guessing Psy might need another smash-hit video to make this one fly.

The phrase "I'm a mother-father gentleman" is repeating throughout, which sounds like.well.you don't need us to tell you. His record label YG Entertainment is yet to provide any explanations for the bizarre lyrics on 'Gentleman' which could suggest there is no explanation. Absolutely none.

Following its global release this week, Gentleman has already topped several local music charts in Korea, though it's expected to bother the top of the charts in plenty more countries once people catch on. A video shouldn't hurt either. Psy has made a reported $10 million from Gangnam Style alone, now the most watched video in YouTube history. The star will demonstrate new dance moves for 'Gentleman' during a sold-out show in front of 50,000 people at Seoul's Sangam stadium on Saturday.
