Sofia Vergara (born 10.7.1972) Sofia Vergara is a Colombian actress, comedian and model. She is perhaps best known for playing the role of Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in Modern Family.
Childhood: Sofia Vergara was born in Barranquilla in Colombia, to Margarita Vergara Davila de Vergara and Julio Enrique Vergara Robayo. Her father was a cattle farmer and she was raised as a Catholic, attending private school, which was bilingual in Spanish and English.
Vergara left school just two semesters before graduating from university, to pursue a career in modeling. Eventually, she moved to Miami, Florida, to escape from the unrest in Columbia that saw her older brother murdered in 1998. When she moved to the States, she took her mother, sister and son with her. Her sister Sandra now also works as an actress.
Career: Sofia Vergara was originally spotted whilst she walked along a Colombian beach. Due to her strict upbringing, she was originally nervous about accepting the offer of television work. With the permission of her Catholic schoolteachers, she undertook her first TV commercial work - an advert for Pepsi.
In Bogota, Columbia, at the age of 20, she began to work as a runway model and on TV. For three years, she presented Fuera de serie, a travel programme that saw her travelling to exotic locations around the world. The show was also broadcast on American network channels, for the Latin American audience.
Vergara then landed a guest appearance in the HBO series Entourage.
After signing a contract with ABC, Vergara went on to star in sitcoms such as Hot Properties and The Knights of Prosperity. She currently stars in Modern Family, along with Ed O'Neill, Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen. In 2010 and 2011, she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. She has also been nominated for a Golden Globe and three Screen Actors Guild Awards.
She then went on to play the role of Alicia Oviedo in the Columbian version of Desperate Housewives, entitled Amas de Casa Desesperadas. Her role in the series was, essentially, the Columbian version of Mary Alice Young, played by Brenda Strong in the American original.
Vergara then went on to appear in Dirty Sexy Money, playing the role of Jeremy Darling's love interest.
2009 saw Vergara venture off-screen and onstage, with a five-week stint in a Broadway production of Chicago.
In 2012, Vergara stars in The Three Stooges, an adaptation of the 1930's vaudeville show. The film is a Farrelly Brothers' production and also stars Chris Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes and Will Sasso as the Three Stooges themselves.
Throughout her career, Sofia Vergara has been chosen as the face of a number of brands and products, including the cosmetics company CoverGirl and Xfinity. She appeared in a Diet Pepsi commercial with David Beckham but the exact nature of her relationship with Diet Pepsi has not yet been formalized.
Personal Life: Sofia Vergara married at the age of 18 and had her first child, Manolo Gonzalez-Ripoli Vergara when she was 20.
In 2000, Vergara was diagnosed with thyroid cancer but she made full recovery after treatment.
