Biography

White Lies (formed 2005)

White Lies are an English alternative rock band from London. The lineup of the band consists of Harry McVeigh on vocals and rhythm guitar, Jack Lawrence-Brown on drums and Charles Cave on bass guitar and backing vocals.

White Lies: Starting Out

Charles Cave and Jack Lawrence-Brown met at North Ealing Primary School, where they played their first show together. Harry McVeigh and Andrew Inman, who were from Shepherd's Bush, joined the band later on and the band was named Fear Of Flying. At the time, the band was a 'weekend project' for the boys.

As time went on, the band found themselves supporting the likes of Laura Marling, Jamie T and The Maccabees. Andrew Inman left the band on 2006, after an argument, so the remaining three continued without him.

Fear of Flying released two "7 singles on the independent Young and Lost Club label in 2006. The first was 'Routemaster' / 'Round Three' and the second was 'Three's A Crowd' / 'Forget-Me-Nots'. They were both produced by Stephen Street, who is famous for his production work with Blur and Morrissey.

In August 2007, Fear of Flying played the Underage Festival in Victoria Park, London. The members of the band decided that, rather than going to university, they would all take a second gap year. They had decided to disband as Fear of Flying and begin again with a new, darker sound, enabling them to write more personal songs. Their new sound has been compared to the likes of Editors, Echo and the Bunnymen and The Killers, while Harry McVeigh's vocals have been compared to those of Joy Division's Ian Curtis.

Their first gig as White Lies was in Hoxton, London, at the Bar and Kitchen in February 2008. A number of A&R representatives from various record companies were present at the gig. White Lies received a number of offers of record deals but eventually signed with Fiction Records.

White Lies' UK TV debut came with an appearance on Later. With Jools Holland in May 2008, on which they played 'Unfinished Business' and 'Death'. They also played at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in Maidstone, Kent as well as playing a number of major festivals, including T in the Park, Oxegen and the Reading and Leeds festivals. White Lies continued to gig extensively, playing at the CMJ Music Festival in the US, alongside Jay Reatard and Violens. Upon returning to the UK, they supported Glasvegas on their UK tour.

White Lies' debut album was entitled To Lose My Life. and was released in January 2009, shortly after they had been shortlisted for the BBC's 'Sound of 2009' poll (Little Boots was the overall winner). The NME chose the band to perform on their 2009 ShockWaves NME Tour, alongside Florence and the Machine, Friendly Fires and Glasvegas. They also appeared on Jo Whiley's Live Lounge, playing a cover of Kanye West's 'Love Lockdown'.

A Week In Music – Kurt Vile Has His Own Day, Tom Odell Lives Up To The Hype, Candy Says Are Delighted & Kanye Still Thinks He's God

Kurt Vile Kanye West Tom Odell White Lies Muse Beware of Darkness Jimmy Eat World Michael Franti Candy Says Rolling Stones Studio Killers

Kurt VileA week in videos… It’s been a busy week for the languid voiced, melancholic entity that is Kurt Vile, and he’s topped it off by releasing a new video for KV Crimes – a song off his latest release Wakin' On A Pretty Daze. Directed by Tom Scharpling, the video riffs on the recent news that the 28th of August will officially be known as Kurt Vile Day. The actual ceremony will be marked by a free concert at City Hall from, guess who, Kurt Vile

Lack of sunny weather and increased austerity got you feeling down? Then the video for Michael Franti & Spearhead - I'm Alive (Life Sounds Like) will do a sterling job of perking you up, unless you’re averse to whistling that is. Drums and face paint at the ready; it’s festival season, and Michal Franti & Spearhead are getting ready for a summer of live shows with this seasonal video, full of fun and vitality. And drums. We mentioned drums, right?

While 20 years is a long time to develop that pop punk, emo, power pop or alternative rock sound – whatever you want to call it – it seems as though Jimmy Eat World still sound the same, not that that’s a bad thing. Their eighth studio album 'Damage' is due to hit shelves on June 11th 2013, and the video for their new single, I Will Steal You Bank conjures memories of their frenetic live shows with its nostalgic black & white style.

No White Lies Here - They Really Are Back! London Indie-Rockers Return With New Album 'Big TV'

White Lies

We thought White Lies had gone under to be perfectly honest – and so had plenty of others to be fair – but London’s favourite Editors imitators (themselves imitators of Interpol who themselves… you get the jist) have returned with a brand new track ‘Getting Even,’ ahead of the release of their third album Big TV, which is out on August 12th.

The record comes out on Fiction Records and will also be preceded by a first proper single, 'There Goes Our Love Again.' The album was apparently recorded with Ed Buller, who we here at Contact will always have a soft spot for thanks to his work with Suede in the early 90’s. Speaking of the new record, front man Harry McVeigh told the NME "It's still quite a full-on sound, it's just that with less guitars, and less of everything in general, you could hear things being played...Anyone that was into us from the start and has seen us develop is going to really bloody love this album."

We totally forgot about the group’s second album Ritual if we’re honest, but it turns out it did pretty well, making number three in the UK album charts and even breaking the US Billboard Top 100 at 95th spot! That beat 146th for 2009 debut To Lose My Life…, although that same record did top the UK album chart. Swings and roundabouts then really.

White Lies, Ritual Album Review

White Lies are not a band content with standing still, their debut album To lose my life.. exhibited a band of ambitious tendencies, creating a sound not designed, nor content to play anything but arenas and stadiums at full capacity. They follow the same action plan as those far from modest Vegas boys The Killers with their uncompromising intent almost bursting at the seams. Unfortunately there are a few hurdles on the track, guitar based music is far from the big seller it has previously been, even the album chart is awash with numskulls singing from the Gaga hymn sheet. So White Lies may have to wait their turn patiently, after all Muse style domination doesn't come over night but that doesn't necessarily mean that it won't come at all.

Either way White Lies are going the right way about their ambitions, Is Love, is testament to that, an epic opener that's heavy in beats and meaty in its guitars. Similarly the Joy Division bleakness of Streetlight has a groove to it that becomes a permanent mainstay as the album progresses.
