Kickboxer: Vengeance Review

OK

The 1989 Muay Thai action movie Kickboxer starred a young Jean-Claude Van Damme, who pops up in this rather cheesy remake in the old mentor role. Designed as the launch of a new franchise for martial artist Alain Moussi, this movie just about gets away with being a guilty pleasure romp. Although the predictability of the plot and the corny dialogue make it sometimes feel like a spoof.

Moussi plays Kurt, a fit young guy who travels to Thailand after his big brother Eric (Darren Shahlayi) is killed while fighting the thuggish master Tong Po (David Bautista). Posing as a seeker, he enters Tong Po's training temple and challenges the master to a duo. But of course he's not ready yet. With the help of the very hot young cop Liu (Sara Malakul Lane), who feels guilty because the police neglected to investigate Eric's death, Kurt tracks down Eric's trainer Durand (Van Damme). But can he improve his skills in time for the big showdown? And what is underground fight organiser Marcia (Gina Carano) up to?

The screenwriters assemble this story by numbers, adding in a number of real-life mixed martial-arts champions (their underwritten roles seem added in to distract fans from the simple plot). Director John Stockwell shoots and edits the film like a cheap B-movie, although the exotic locations look terrific. And of course there's a major fight about every five minutes, each with its own specific gimmick (like an instant rainstorm or two handy elephants to climb on). Even so, the fight choreography feels somewhat cursory, more flashy than brutal. But the real problem is that most of the fighters simply aren't up to the acting challenge. Moussi has a charismatic presence and a lithe, muscly physicality, but his scenes only work when he's punching or kicking someone's lights out. Even his interaction with an unusually relaxed Van Damme only works when they're physically sparring.

Determined to exact a deadly revenge, Clay drags him towards the water's edge in the woods, but before he can do what he set out to do, they are interrupted by a brutal drugs gang who are searching for fifty pounds of heroin that got lost in transit. Anything You Can Do, Chuck Norris Can Do Better, (Including Jean-Claude Van Damme's Truck Stunt)

Chuck Norris Jean Claude Van Damme

Last month, Jean Claude Van Damme (53) performed an amazing stunt – doing the splits between two moving trucks for a Volvo ad. It was an amazing feat and an impressive display of Van Damme’s athleticism, not to mention a killer advertising ploy for Volvo.

Who did it better - Van Damme or Norris?

But of course, this is showbiz, so it had to be topped. Stuntman, actor and internet punchline Chuck Norris released a video this week, in which he performs the same stunt – except with planes. Cue Chuck Norris jokes now. We know you want to.

Jean-Claude Van Damme Volvo Ad Is Sheer Self-Parody Brilliance (But Don't Try It At Home)

Jean Claude Van Damme

The Jean-Claude Van Damme Volvo ad is doing the viral rounds, and rightly so. Even the most cynically minded of you, who (probably rightly so) like to ignore advertising because of its parasitic, profit = deficit nature, can surely bask in the brilliance that is the Belgian beef-cake standing on two separate lorries as they glide through a deserted highway.

Jean-Claude Van DammeJean-Claude Van Damme - now that's a movie star's face

While Volvo say the ad was “set up to demonstrate the precision and directional stability of Volvo Dynamic Steering,” it’s pretty clear the real aim of the 1m17s spot was to be shared by eager, social media-savvy users, not necessarily consumers.

Nicolas Cage A "Highly Unlikely" Addition To Expendables 3

Nicolas Cage Sylvester Stallone Bruce Willis Jet Li Dolph Lundgren Jean Claude Van Damme Mickey Rourke Vanessa Hudgens Jason Statham Chuck Norris Terry Crews

After being rumoured to be joining the Expendables 3 cast, Knowing actor Nicolas Cage has shot down such murmurings in an interview with Den of Geek putting it plainly that he'd had no involvement so far: "I have not had any formal discussions about that movie," he said referring to Expendables. "I'm not in Kick-Ass 2 and I don't think I'm in Expendables 3. And I like those guys, but I would say it would be highly unlikely that I'd be in that movie," he added, destroying another fervent internet rumour while he was at it.

The Expendables 2 Review

Good
Although there's been no attempt to tone down the first film's bloodthirsty hyperviolence or dim-witted plotting, this sequel is a massive improvement simply because they have fun with the premise. As a result, so do we.

Barney (Stallone) and his team of ageing mercenaries are coerced by Church (Willis) into heading into hostile territory to retrieve a top secret electronic gadget. Most shocking is the fact that Church insists that a woman, Maggie (Yu), joins them. And when things go wrong, Barney leads the gang on a grisly revenge mission against a nasty villain (Van Damme) who's callously putting humanity in peril. Along the way they're joined by Church and Trench (Schwarzenegger), and get help from lone-wolf Booker (Norris).

Dragon Eyes Trailer

Since being released from prison, Ryan Hong (Le) has vowed to live a better life and 'do good' whenever possible. Before his stint in jail, other than a bad attitude Hong didn't have much going for him; that was until he met future mentor Tiano (Van Damme) who taught him unrivalled martial arts skills and gave the youngster a new view on life.

The Expendables 2 Trailer

Mr Church reunites the Expendables: Barney Ross; Lee Christmas; Yin Yang; Gunnar Jensen; Toll Road and Hale Caesar for a simple job. They are joined by two newcomers: Billy the Kid and Maggie. All in all, it looks like an easy paycheck for the Expendables. But things aren't always what they appear to be and when one of their own is brutally killed, the men set out to get revenge.

The Expendables are a group of highly trained mercenaries who are past their prime. In their last adventure, they get together for a mission to overthrow a Latin American dictator in Vilena, an island in between the Gulf of Mexico and South America.

Chinese actress Yu Nan joins the cast as the first female Expendable, while Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger expand their cameos as Mr Church and Trent Mauser, respectively. The Expendables 2 is directed by Simon West (Con Air; Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) and was written by Sylvester Stallone, who directed the first film, which was released in 2010. Upon its release, The Expendables was a box office hit, grossing $266,159,621 worldwide, despite mixed reviews from critics.

The Expendables are back and this time it's personal.

In US cinemas from August 17, 2012

Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Liam Hemsworth, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean Claude Van Damme, Jet Li, Yu Nan, Chuck Norris, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Novak Djokovic and Randy Couture

Kung Fu Panda 2 Review

Very Good
Jack Black's cuddly alter-ego is back for another epic adventure in this lively, colourful sequel. It pretty much has the same plot as the final act of the 2008 original, and it's not quite as funny, but it's beautifully animated and thoroughly engaging.

Now that Dragon Warrior panda Po (voiced by Black) has joined the Furious Five (Jolie's tigress, Rogen's mantis, Chan's monkey, Liu's viper and Cross' crane), there's peace in the valley again. But in a distant kingdom, the villainous peacock Lord Shen (Oldman) has developed a secret weapon with which he plans to take over China and put an end to kung fu. Although he's been rattled for decades, since his soothsayer (Yeoh) told him he'll be conquered by a panda.

And he knows the Dragon Warrior is on his way.
