The Expendables 3 Review

Good

Striking a tone somewhere between the po-faced original and the silly Part 2, this rampaging action nonsense is badly overcrowded and chaotic, but there's plenty of comedy and whizzy stuntwork to keep the audience entertained. It of course helps a lot that the film is packed to the rafters with iconic actors and lively newcomers. And their sassy dialogue helps make up for the idiotic plot.

It opens with a prison break, as Barney (Sylvester Stallone) and his team (Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture and Terry Crews) rescue their old cohort Doc (Wesley Snipes) then head off on a mysterious mission that turns out to involve their presumed-dead nemesis Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), who is targeting Barney's team. So Barney and his pal Bonaparte (Kelsey Grammer) set about finding four new commandoes (Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Glen Powell and Victor Ortiz) to take on Stonebanks, but of course nothing goes as plan. For the final face-off they're joined by the old team, CIA boss Drummer (Harrison Ford), former colleagues Trench and Yin (Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jet Li), and chatty newcomer Galgo (Antonio Banderas).

The ever-increasing cast means that some characters can't help but be pushed into the shadows (Crews and Li are barely in this film), while others hover around the edges of scenes injecting moments of sarcastic wit. Each of the characters gets his or her moment of eye-popping action, as the film lurches from set-piece to set-piece in a whirl of bombs, bullets and blades. All of this is fun because the actors are gleefully refusing to take any of this seriously. The scene-stealers this time are Gibson, terrific as the swaggering villain, and Banderas, who's hilarious as the only person who can string a sentence together.

Nicolas Cage A "Highly Unlikely" Addition To Expendables 3

Nicolas Cage Sylvester Stallone Bruce Willis Jet Li Dolph Lundgren Jean Claude Van Damme Mickey Rourke Vanessa Hudgens Jason Statham Chuck Norris Terry Crews

After being rumoured to be joining the Expendables 3 cast, Knowing actor Nicolas Cage has shot down such murmurings in an interview with Den of Geek putting it plainly that he'd had no involvement so far: "I have not had any formal discussions about that movie," he said referring to Expendables. "I'm not in Kick-Ass 2 and I don't think I'm in Expendables 3. And I like those guys, but I would say it would be highly unlikely that I'd be in that movie," he added, destroying another fervent internet rumour while he was at it.

Sylvester Stallone Arnold Schwarzenegger Dolph Lundgren Jason Statham Mikael Hafstrom Joseph Gordon-Levitt Jackie Chan Nicolas Cage Jet Li Chuck Norris Terry Crews

The Expendables 2 Review

Good
Although there's been no attempt to tone down the first film's bloodthirsty hyperviolence or dim-witted plotting, this sequel is a massive improvement simply because they have fun with the premise. As a result, so do we.

Barney (Stallone) and his team of ageing mercenaries are coerced by Church (Willis) into heading into hostile territory to retrieve a top secret electronic gadget. Most shocking is the fact that Church insists that a woman, Maggie (Yu), joins them. And when things go wrong, Barney leads the gang on a grisly revenge mission against a nasty villain (Van Damme) who's callously putting humanity in peril. Along the way they're joined by Church and Trench (Schwarzenegger), and get help from lone-wolf Booker (Norris).

The Expendables 2 Trailer

Mr Church reunites the Expendables: Barney Ross; Lee Christmas; Yin Yang; Gunnar Jensen; Toll Road and Hale Caesar for a simple job. They are joined by two newcomers: Billy the Kid and Maggie. All in all, it looks like an easy paycheck for the Expendables. But things aren't always what they appear to be and when one of their own is brutally killed, the men set out to get revenge.

The Expendables are a group of highly trained mercenaries who are past their prime. In their last adventure, they get together for a mission to overthrow a Latin American dictator in Vilena, an island in between the Gulf of Mexico and South America.

Chinese actress Yu Nan joins the cast as the first female Expendable, while Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger expand their cameos as Mr Church and Trent Mauser, respectively. The Expendables 2 is directed by Simon West (Con Air; Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) and was written by Sylvester Stallone, who directed the first film, which was released in 2010. Upon its release, The Expendables was a box office hit, grossing $266,159,621 worldwide, despite mixed reviews from critics.

The Expendables are back and this time it's personal.

The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor Review

Bad
In the classic movie monster hierarchy, the cloth-clad Mummy really scrapes the bottom of the scare barrel. Aside from his close kinship with the zombie -- sadly, this is one Egyptian artifact that avoids the mandatory skin eating -- there's really nothing inherently spooky about a reanimated corpse with limited super(natural) powers. This is especially true of the sarcophagus' latest big screen incarnation. In Rob Cohen's horrid The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, our wrapped rascal is literally as menacing as an inert stone statue.

Ever since the end of WWII, the rough riding O'Connell Family -- Rick (Brendan Fraser), Evelyn (Maria Bello, subbing for Rachael Weisz), and college age son Alex (Luke Ford) -- have been in semi-retirement. Gone are the days when they would circumnavigate the globe looking for ancient treasure and kicking antiquated butt. When they get the chance to return a precious diamond to the people of China, they jump at the chance. Unfortunately, the gem is instrumental in the resurrection of the evil Emperor Han (Jet Li), a ruthless tyrant bent on conquering the world. Luckily, an ancient witch (Michelle Yeoh) has cursed him to an eternity embedded in rock. Of course, it won't be long before our haphazard adventurers have him up and around -- and seeking immortality via his massive terra cotta army.

Jet Li Married His First Wife Out Of Duty

Jet Li Nina Li Chi

Chinese acting legend, Jet Li, has revealed that he married his first wife out of a sense of duty, and not because the two were in love. He had met his first wife at school despite her being two years older than him, and wed the classmate in 1987. They were then divorced in 1990, yet they continued to be friends despite.

Li explained that, "My family was poor. Her family was well-off. She often took care of me. That's how it happened. I didn't know what love was. In terms of how much emotion each person devoted, she maybe gave 90 per cent or 80 per cent. At most I gave... I still haven't figured out. When we parted, we were really like friends."

Although, after starring alongside Nina Li Chi in the 1988 film 'Dragon Fight' (originally titled 'Long zai tian ya'), Li discovered the true meaning of love and married his co-star. He revealed: "You realise, 'I put myself out there. I can give up my fame and success, give up my status, give up my money. I'm even willing to die for her.' You realise this is love."
