Annie Lennox (born 25.12.1954)
Annie Lennox is a Scottish musician and singer. She rose to fame whilst she was a member of Eurythmics, with Dave Stewart in the 1980s.
Childhood: Annie Lennox was born on Christmas Day in Aberdeen. Her mother was originally a cook, then a housewife, whilst her father was a worker at the shipyard.
When Annie was seven, her parents, despite having a meager income, paid for her to have piano lessons. As a teenager, she attended Aberdeen High School for Girls and in 1964, she came second in a talent contest at Butlins, singing 'Marie's Wedding.'
Annie Lennox studied at the Royal Academy of Music for three years, after winning a scholarship there. In 2006, Lennox was made an honourary Fellow of the Academy.
Music Career: From 1977-1980, Annie Lennox was the lead singer of the band The Tourists. The band enjoyed moderate success. During her time in the band, Lennox had a brief relationship with fellow band mate Dave Stewart.
Following the demise of The Tourists, Stewart and Lennox formed Eurythmics, a synth-pop duo. Lennox was the singer of the band and was noted for her androgynous style.
Eurythmics had a number of global hits, including 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)', 'Who's That Girl?' and 'There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)'.
Eurythmics never officially split up, but Annie did appear to make a fairly obvious break from the band when she began to pursue her solo career in 1990.
In 1992, she released 'Little Bird', one of her most successful solo singles. In the video for the single, she used a number of Annie Lennox look-alikes that were dressed as her many different public personas that she had used throughout her career. That same year, she performed alongside David Bowie and the remaining members of Queen, at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert and Wembley Stadium, signing the Queen song 'Under Pressure'.
Her debut solo album, Diva was released in 1992 and featured the singles 'Little Bird', 'Walking On Broken Glass' and 'Love Song For A Vampire', which was featured on the soundtrack to Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula. One of her B-sides, 'Step By Step' was later covered by Whitney Houston.
In 1995, Lennox released Medusa. The album was a collection of cover versions, including 'No More I Love You's' and Paul Simon's 'Something So Right'.
In 1997, Annie re-recorded an old Eurythmics track, 'Angel', for a tribute album to Diana, Princess of Wales.
In 1998, prompted by the death of Peet Coombes (singer and songwriter for The Tourists), Lennox made contact with Dave Stewart again. The Eurythmics were re-born and made the album Peace in 1999.
Lennox's third solo album, Bare, was released in 2003 and the next year, she won an Academy Award for Best Song. The award was given for her song 'Into The West', which was used in the soundtrack to Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Return Of The King. The song was co-written with Fran Walsh and Howard Shore.
In July 2005, Annie Lennox was chosen to perform at the London leg of the Live 8 concerts, alongside artists such as Sting and Madonna. Later that year, an Eurythmics greatest hits album entitled Ultimate Collection was released. They recorded two new pieces for the release and released 'I've Got a Life' as a single.
In 2007, Lennox released her fourth solo album, entitled Songs of Mass Destruction. The debut single from the album was 'Dark Road'. The track 'Sing' features 23 other successful female artists, including Dido, Fergie, Beth Gibbons of Portishead, Beverley Knight, Beth Orton, Sugababes and KT Tunstall.
Personal Life: Annie Lennox was married to Radha Raman for a year from 1984 to 1985.
Lennox's second marriage was to Uri Fruchtmann, an Israeli film producer. The pair were married from 1988 - 2000 and had two daughters together, named Loli and Tali.
Lennox shared what might well have been a phishing e-mail from a "new music co-ordinator" called Kylie.
It was foot-in-mouth time for a Los Angeles radio station this week after it invited legendary pop singer Annie Lennox to send in her latest single for consideration as part of a talent scouting exercise.
Yes – despite eight BRIT Awards, four Grammys, an Oscar and a Golden Globe on top of spending the best part of four decades scoring hit singles with Eurythmics and as a solo artist, it seems that there’s people in the music business that haven’t heard of Lennox.
Annie Lennox is apparently an undiscovered talent, according to 'Kylie'
Annie Lennox, Gary Oldman and Lorde all paid tribute to the late icon in a special segment at the end of Wednesday night's Brit Awards.
The 2016 Brit Awards, held at London’s O2 Arena on Wednesday night, saw the late pop legend honoured with a Brits Icon Award presented by Oldman, followed by a performance of ‘Life On Mars?’ which saw Lorde supported by Bowie’s backing band. Eurythmics singer Annie Lennox presented the award near the end of the evening, which Bowie’s friend Oldman accepted on his behalf.

"This is what I'd like to ask you to help with. A little more time for children to be children. Stretch the moment of magic and playfulness,” Cumberbatch wrote. "Distract them from the realities of a world gone mad so that they can laugh with their breath rather than sob with their tears.”

Charlotte Church seems willing to take on one of the biggest businesses in the world as she denounces the "culture of demeaning women" in the contemporary music industry. The 27-year-old singer made her comments as she delivered the keynote speech for the John Peel Lecture.
Having suffered the very same fate she accuses the music industry of inflicting on young female artists, Church has emerged as a popular voice of reason in a spectrum clearly lacking reason and forethought.
Miley Cyrus’s increased sexualisation of herself, and inanimate objects like foam fingers and wrecking balls, has catalysed the concern regarding an underlying culture of sexism and exploitation.
The Welsh singer supports Lennox, Bjork and Prince - denounces the influence of Miley Cyrus, Rihanna.
Once a puppet, with her own sexuality out of her control and a musical career that involved exploitation and sexism, Charlotte Church certainly speaks from experience when she talks of the dangers of hyper-sexualisation in contemporary pop music.
Charlotte Church's speech was eloquent and well recieved
The speech was broadcast at midnight on Tuesday 15th on BBC Radio 6, and was made as part of the John Peel Lecture on Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour. The eloquent address picked out modern phenomena and highlighted the perils of using sex to sell music, especially in a video medium.
Annie Lennox has defied her previous intentions never to remarry, and has remarried, reports Sky News.
The ceremony, which according to Lennox’s spokesperson was “a private ceremony with friends and family present," took place in London, on a boat on the Thames, with guests including Oscar winner Colin Firth and comic Ruby Wax. Her first marriage to German Hare Krishna devotee Radha Ramen in 1984 ended before it really began, and her second marriage to Israeli film and record producer Uri Frutmann also failed, despite the fact that they had two daughters before they divorced in 2000. Lennox had previously said that she’d never get married again, but love seems to have taken its toll, and the former Eurhythmics singer hasn’t even bothered to address her conflicting statements: probably because she doesn’t care. The Scottish Daily Record quoted a friend as saying, "She and Mitch (Besser) are probably going to get away for a few days" whilst on Lennox's Facebook page, she posted a photo of her white and pastel pink wedding flowers.
Lennox reportedly met Dr Mitch Besser in 2009 through his charity for which she fundraises. In 2011, Lennox received an OBE from Queen Elizabeth, not for her contributions to music, but for her charity work. She is a committed activist, raising money and awareness for HIV charities.
Annie Lennox has married for the third time, People Magazine have reported. The former Eurythmics singer married an American doctor, Mitch Besser. Both Mitch and Annie are 57; they tied the knot in London on Saturday September 15, in a private ceremony with 150 friends, on a boat on the Thames. Lennox is a committed activist and frequently campaigns to raise awareness and money for HIV charities. Dr. Besser is a Harvard educated gynaecologist, who founded the private, Africa-based organisation mothers2mothers, which is dedicated to reducing the transmission of HIV between mothers and their children.
Annie’s two daughters, Lola, 22 and Tali, 19 were bridesmaids. The bride reportedly wore a long white gown with a lace bolero shrug and a 1920s style headpiece. Their wedding guests – including Ruby Wax and Colin Firth - were then treated to sushi and mini roast puddings, followed by mini fruitcakes. A friend of Annie’s told the Daily Record “Annie doesn’t go in for all the celebrity photos of a big showbiz wedding. She and Mitch are probably going to get away for a few days.” She had previously said that she wouldn’t marry again as she “didn’t see the point of it.”
The couple met in 2009, through the work of his organisation and in 2011, Annie was awarded an OBE from Queen Elizabeth, for her charity work. Her music is equally well respected and Annie recently had an exhibition dedicated to her work, at the prestigious Victoria and Albert museum in London. Her agent confirmed the news of the marriage in a short statement.
