Macbeth Review

Very Good

Shakespeare's Scottish play returns to the big screen with earthy energy, visual style and roaring performances. Acclaimed Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel (Snowtown) takes an artistic approach that makes terrific use of sweeping landscapes and harsh weather, which allows the cast to put their guts into their roles. Yet while the film looks absolutely amazing, the sound mix is so muddled that anyone unfamiliar with the play will find it difficult to follow.

Michael Fassbender plays Macbeth, an 11th century general who has just triumphed on the Highland battlefield but is struggling internally after he and Lady Macbeth (Marion Cotillard) lost their infant child. So when three witches tell him that he is destined to become king, his wife encourages him to make it happen sooner rather than later. In secret, Macbeth murders King Duncan (David Thewlis) and pins the blame on his son Malcolm (Jack Reynor), who flees in fear, raising suspicion. Now on the throne, King and Queen Macbeth are overwhelmed by paranoia about any hint of a threat to their power, raising distrust of loyal friends like Banquo (Paddy Considine) and Duncan's defender Macduff (Sean Harris). Meanwhile, Malcolm has raised an army in England and is coming back to claim his title.

This is one of Shakespeare's bleakest, leanest plays, and Kurzel gives it an intriguingly expansive tone by setting most of the action outdoors in the elements rather than in shadowy castle corridors. In addition to adding a gritty, muddy kick, this allows the battle sequences to take on a Lord of the Rings-scale intensity. So the effect of this violence on the characters is that much more resonant. Lady Macbeth turns inward, tormenting herself in an extended dream sequence, while Macbeth goes the other way, killing anyone who seems even remotely shifty. But of course they also understand that their ambition and guilt are causing these extreme reactions.

“Shakespeare is a genius. The one thing I kept saying to Justin is, ‘If we can inspire the kids, that would be wonderful,” Fassbender said. “It’s an arrogant thing for me to presume that they weren’t already inspired by it but I’m talking from my own experience.”

Ridley Scott Intends To Make Three More 'Prometheus' Movies

Ridley Scott Michael Fassbender Noomi Rapace

Fans of the Alien franchise who were left slightly confused by Prometheus a few years ago can rest easy that everything will be explained – eventually. Director Ridley Scott has claimed that he wants to make three sequels to Prometheus, at the end of which the storyline will link into the Alien narrative.

Scott, 77, told German entertainment website FilmFutter that the two franchises would eventually dovetail into one another when he was asked about Prometheus 2, which is not due for release for another couple of years. It will see Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace return to reprise the roles they occupied for the 2012 original.

“It will not be the next [film]” the director said. “It will be in the next but one Prometheus or perhaps even in a later film, before we are, in a sense, back in the Alien franchise.”

Steve Jobs Trailer

Steve Jobs is widely regarded as a pioneer in the age of technology, making the computer accessible to all with his billionaire organisation Apple Inc. Though as much as he was a genius, he made a lot of enemies on his way to fame, fortune and recognition while relying on his skilled best friend Steve Wozniak. He refused to co-operate with much of the staff at Apple including CEO John Sculley, and henceforth detached himself from the company, but meanwhile his personal life was no more amicable. Refusing to be a father to his college girlfriend Chrisann Brennan's daughter Lisa and denying all paternity shone a bad light on him in the eyes of his family, his colleagues and the public especially when paternity was proven. But upon his return to Apple came a new man, humbled by his previous behaviour and willing to be both a father and a fair businessman. But of all the sacrifices he made to make Apple great, his health suffered most of all.

Jennifer Lawrence Michael Fassbender James McAvoy Nicholas Hoult

Hollywood A-list star Jennifer Lawrence took some time out of her manic filming schedule to visit a children’s hospital in Montreal, Canada and surprise some young patients. Obviously, there were pictures taken of her with the kids and chatting to staff, which is another reminder of why everybody loves J-Law. Jennifer Lawrence And Michael Fassbender Team For 'Big Lebowski' Live Reading

Jennifer Lawrence Michael Fassbender Olivia Munn

Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and Olivia Munn were among the stars who participated in a special live reading of the script for cult classic movie The Big Lebowski at the Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal. But it all very nearly ended in disaster when a flub by Olivia Munn almost threw the whole star-studded cast off.

Jennifer LawrenceJennifer Lawrence has participated in a live reading of The Big Lebowski.

According to Mashable, Munn who was playing Bunny, Maude's stepmother, managed to stop the entire cast in their tracks when she accidently read Lawrence’s opening line. Lawrence, who had been assigned the part of Jeffrey Lebowski's daughter Maude and seemed equally confused when Munn said her lines.

Wait, Is 'Slow West' The Best Movie Of 2015 So Far?

Michael Fassbender

Slow West is kind of a slow burner. In terms of the attention it's receiving in Hollywood anyway. The release of John M. McLean's modern western has snuck up on us with little fanfare, though the critics are lauding the movie, which boasts a particularly strong performance from one Michael Fassbender.

Slow WestMichael Fassbender[L] and Kodi Smith-McPhee [R] in Slow West

Set at the end of the nineteenth century, Slow West follows 16-year-old Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee) journeying across the American frontier in search of the woman he loves. Fassbender plays Silas, Jay's fellow traveller.

'Slow West' Channels Michael Fassbender's Energy

Michael Fassbender Kodi Smit-McPhee

Michael Fassbender has always wanted to be in a cowboy movie, so he leapt at the chance to reunite with first-time feature writer-director John Maclean. The two previously worked together for three days on the 2009 short Man on a Motorcycle, so Fassbender came on board Slow West not only as an actor but also as a producer.

Maclean wrote the role specifically for Fassbender, who helped develop the script before filming began. "It was nice to see that journey through," Fassbender says, "as this was an idea that he'd had brewing for a good few years."

Slow West Review

Excellent

First-time feature filmmaker John Maclean takes a strikingly original approach to the Western, creating a realistic road trip for two very different men. Genre fans might wish it was more of a shoot-em-up (the massive final gun battle is astonishingly earthy), but it more than makes up for that with a strong sense of its characters and settings. And by shooting it in New Zealand, Maclean found an unspoiled, spectacular landscape that has its own memorable impact.

The story centres on Jay (Kodi Smit-McPhee), a tenacious 16-year-old travelling from Scotland to find his beloved Rose (Caren Pistorius), who has moved to the Wild West with her father (Rory McCann). As Jay enters dangerous bandit country in Colorado, he meets bounty hunter Silas (Michael Fassbender), who offers to accompany him through the perilous forests and mountains ahead. What Jay doesn't know is that Silas used to be in the most feared gang in these hills, led by his old pal Payne (Ben Mendelsohn). And as they traverse the landscape, meeting various robbers and some angry Native Americans, Payne is never too far behind, because he's hoping they'll lead him to Rose and her father, who have a $2,000 bounty on them, dead or alive.

What makes this movie so engaging is the growing connection between Jay and Silas, who aren't quite as different as they seem to be on the surface. Smit-McPhee plays Jay as soft and naive, and yet his fearlessness shows a steely inner strength that should never be underestimated. Meanwhile, Fassbender gives Silas a jaded charm as the stranger who doesn't want anyone to know who he really is. While Jay wears his emotions on his sleeve, Silas clearly feels them just as strongly but has learned the hard way to keep them bottled inside. Especially while living in a place like this, where any true sense of civilisation has yet to take root.

Aaron Sorkin On Jobs Movie: "I Don't Know Who Michael Fassbender Is"

Aaron Sorkin Michael Fassbender

Is it time to suggest Aaron Sorkin is no longer the relevant screenwriter he was during The West Wing years? No, No, It probably isn't. In recent years, Sorkin has offered up some of the finest scripts in Hollywood - Charlie Wilson's War, The Social Network, Moneyball - as well as working on HBO's The Newsroom.

Aaron SorkinAaron Sorkin wanted Tom Cruise to play Steve Jobs

But still, the latest leak of the Sony emails suggests Sorkin's propensity for the glittering A-list casts instead of looking at the bigger picture. The 53-year-old has written the script for the forthcoming Steve Jobs biopic - a movie that plays out in just three long scenes each documenting one of the Apple creator's famous product launches - and recently announced landing the "best actor", Christian Bale for the job.

Steve Jobs Movie In Turmoil As Sony Pulls Out, Universal On The Prowl

Michael Fassbender Aaron Sorkin Steve Jobs

Six months ago, the Jobs movie looked a certain Oscar winner. Written by The West Wing's Aaron Sorkin, it was set to have David Fincher in the director's chair and probably Leonardo DiCaprio as the Apple genius himself. Then things changed a little - Fincher left, apparently over money, and DiCaprio passed on the project to take a break from acting.

Michael FassbenderMichael Fassbender will likely play Steve Jobs after Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale dropped out

The replacements were all-star substitutes. Oscar winner Danny Boyle - the man behind Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours and that Olympics opening ceremony - came in as director, while Christian Bale - probably the greatest actor on the planet today - agreed to play Jobs. Sorkin's screenplay was typically...well, Sorkin. Eschewing the regular conventions of a biopic, it would tell Jobs' story in just three extended scenes, each documenting one of the tech creator's famous product launches.
