Morrissey Cancels Texas Gig Amid "Health Concerns"

Morrissey

Veteran indie icon Morrissey has cancelled another gig in his current American tour, pulling out of Wednesday night’s gig in Texas citing “health concerns” after his voice gave out mid-song earlier this week.

The ex-Smiths singer, 57, announced that he would not be performing his scheduled show in San Antonio’s Tobin Centre, just two days after he was forced to cut short his set in Arizona just six songs in. The move has been made on medical advice to allow Morrissey’s voice to recover so that he can continue his tour later.

Morrissey Blames Management For Cancellation Of US Tour Dates

Morrissey

Morrissey has cancelled the remaining six dates of his U.S. tour, blaming his management for mismanaging the tour’s finances.

In a post on fansite True to You, which the singer uses as his official mouthpiece, Morrissey blamed 360 Management for having to cancel the December dates, saying they had “faded out as quickly as they had faded in”.

Boris To Morrissey: Is This Radical Vegan Really Seeking London Mayorship?

Morrissey

So, Morrissey is seriously considering entering the race to become Mayor of London, putting forth his vegetarian views as his main political focus. And he only needs £10,000 and a minimum of 330 signatures of support. Suddenly all the other potential candidates don't seem so bad now, do they?

MorrisseyMayor Morrissey?

It's one of life's greatest pleasures to be able to escape the Smiths singer's extremist ramblings on vegetarianism with just a few clicks, but it looks like it could be set to be more difficult in the future as he considers taking to politics to press his opinions, because he believes that pressure groups are never going to have any effect until the issue hits the government.

Morrissey Dismisses 'Bad Sex Award' As A "Repulsive Horror"

Morrissey

Morrissey has brushed off the news of his ignominious triumph in the Bad Sex in Fiction award earlier this month, dismissing the panel who awarded him dubious honour as “replusive horrors”.

The 56 year old published his first novel ‘List of the Lost’ back in September, following his first venture into writing with ‘Autobiography’ back in 2013. In addition to lukewarm reviews, an excerpt from the book describing a sex scene, which referenced a “bulbous salutation”, was nominated by the Literary Review for the Bad Sex award, which it promptly won.

Morrissey's 'Bulbous Salutation' Earns 'List Of The Lost' The Bad Sex In Fiction Prize

Morrissey

Morrissey’s debut novel ‘List of the Lost’ has received the dubious honour of the Bad Sex in Fiction award at a ceremony in London.

The former Smiths singer’s first novel, which followed his 2013 ‘Autobiography’, was panned by critics on its publication in September by Penguin, and its reference to a “bulbous salutation” in a sex scene between two of its characters caught the eye of the judging panel and swayed them sufficiently to declare it the ‘winner’.

Five Examples Of Pop Stars Becoming Authors

Morrissey Nick Cave Courtney Love Bruce Dickinson The Decemberists Leonard Cohen

Eagle-eyed indie fans will have seen the hilarious news that Morrissey has been nominated for the ‘Bad Sex Award’ by The Literary Review this week. His first fictional work ‘List of the Lost’, arriving two years after 2013’s notorious ‘Autobiography’, received wildly mixed reviews from most critics.

The nominated passage of ‘erotic’ prose contains the memorable phrase ‘bulbous salutation’. He may be lauded as the lead singer of The Smiths and as a solo artist, but it’s unlikely that his fiction will be remembered in quite the same way, if this is anything to go by.

However, success on the stage doesn’t necessarily preclude a rock star from enjoying successful pursuits as writers. Here are some other, more accomplished examples of rock stars writing prose instead of lyrics.

Morrissey Is Frontrunner For 'Bad Sex Award' With Debut Novel 'List Of The Lost'

Morrissey

Morrissey’s debut debut novel, List Of The Lost, has been nominated for one of the most un-coveted prizes in fiction, the ‘Bad Sex Award’ from The Literary Review. The annual awards honour the "most egregious passage of sexual description in a work of fiction”, with the former Smiths frontman emerging as the frontrunner from this year’s nominees.

MorrisseyMorrissey is up for this year’s ‘Bad Sex Award’.

In List Of The Lost's nominated passage, the singer-turned-author writes: ‘At this, Eliza and Ezra rolled together into the one giggling snowball of full-figured copulation, screaming and shouting as they playfully bit and pulled at each other in a dangerous and clamorous rollercoaster coil of sexually violent rotation with Eliza’s breasts barrel-rolled across Ezra’s howling mouth and the pained frenzy of his bulbous salutation extenuating his excitement as it whacked and smacked its way into every muscle of Eliza’s body except for the otherwise central zone.’

Morrissey's Autobiography To Become Audiobook, Read By...Morrissey

A bluntly put statement posted to the website on Sunday, 3 November, read, "Penguin Classics will release a complete and unabridged digital download of Morrissey's Autobiography on 5 December 2013. "Oh Lou, Why Did You Leave Us?" Morrissey On The Late, Great Lou Reed

Lou Reed Morrissey

Morrissey is leading the tributes to the late great Lou Reed, who died this week from unknown causes. The legendary Velvet Underground man had been in ill health for a while though his death sent shockwaves through the rock community on Sunday (October 27, 2013).

A number of artists have come forward with touching tributes, including David Bowie, his long-time collaborator John Cale and Morrissey.

Quoting his own song 'Life is a Pigsty' in a post titled "Oh Lou/why did you leave us this way?" on the True To You fan-site, Morrissey said, "No words to express the sadness at the death of Lou Reed. He had been there all of my life. He will always be pressed to my heart. Thank God for those, like Lou, who move within their own laws, otherwise imagine how dull the world would be. I knew the Lou of recent years and he was always full of good heart. His music will outlive time itself. We are all timebound, but today, with the loss of liberating Lou, life is a pigsty.

Morrissey's 'Autobiography' Tops The Best Sellers List And Breaks Records On The Way

Morrissey

Autobiography is the collected memoirs of Steven Patrick Morrissey, known best simply by his last name, Morrissey. Released after a long, controversial dispute with publishers Penguin (who, under Morrissey's supposed demands released it as a Penguin Classic), the book offers no shortage of controversial and conversation-starting topics spanning the great singer and lyricist's life, which offers little wonder as to why it has become such an instant success.

Morrissey
Mozza has split the critics with his book, but the sales figures suggest otherwise

The book has performed so well already in fact that it has become one of the fastest selling memoirs since records began, and it is now the fastest ever selling autobiography by a musician, overtaking Keith Richards' 2010 release Life. The book is now the second fastest selling memoir of all time, only coming behind Kate McCann’s Madeleine. Then again, the fact that the book was released as an instant Penguin Classic, meaning it could be released in the cheaper paperback format as well as in hardback, may account for some of it's success.

NME Pick The Smiths' 'The Queen Is Dead' As Greatest Album Of All Time: Surprised?

Morrissey The Smiths

One cold and windy night in August, a band of cloaked NME staffers gathered around the office's Morrissey shrine and asked The Great One what more they could do to worship his glorious name in their eternal plight of penance. A slightly bored-sounding voice answered back "Did you dispose of Elton?"

Morrissey, "I Am Not Homosexual, I Am Attracted To Humans"

Morrissey

Despite releasing an autobiography clocking in at over 500 pages less than a week ago, Morrissey has felt compelled to set the record straight about his sexuality. The former Smiths frontman discussed his relationship with Jake Owen Walters in the book - published under the Penguin Classics imprint - though the singer asserts that he is not gay.

"Unfortunately, I am not homosexual. In technical fact, I am humasexual," he wrote in a note posted on the fansite True To You. "I am attracted to humans. But, of course ... not many."

In the hotly anticipated memoir Autobiography, the singer claimed he was in his mid-thirties before he entered into his first serious relationship - with Jake. "...for the first time in my life the eternal 'I' becomes 'we,' as, finally, I can get on with someone," he writes.

Morrissey Unleashes Scathing Attack On UK Justice System In Autobiography

Morrissey

Morrissey's new autobiography, tentatively title Autobiography, was released this week later than scheduled and to an eagerly awaiting public who couldn't wait to read about the singer's usually cloaked personal life. Early criticism has arisen from the book straight away, with many claiming that the former Smiths frontman comes off as self-important and spiteful, as he spends most of the book lambasting those who have wronged him throughout his life.

Morrissey
The book has received some criticism

One of the main targets that the singer looks to take down is the UK justice system, in particular, how it treated him during his court case against his former bandmate Mike Joyce during the 1990's. In particular, Morrissey attacks the judges who presided over the case individually, calling one the "pride of the pipsqueakery," and going on to attack other court officials he feels were on a personal vendetta against him. It wasn't just the court system that bore the brunt of his criticism though, as he alos went on to attack the one-time Smiths drummer of "constant inaccuracies and assumptions vomited out with leaden fatigue" in court.

Morrissey Autobiography Spoofed In Online Video By Comedian Peter Serafinowicz

Morrissey

What was that about imitation and flattery? Perhaps Peter Serafinowicz’s musical rendition of the first page of Morrissey’s recently published autobiography wasn’t the most cleverly executed bit of comedy ever, but it does create some welcome publicity for the comedian – as well as the book itself. In the minute-and-a-half video, Serafinowicz imitates Morrissey’s trademark style, crooning about the street he grew up on.

Morrissey, Autobiography Signing
Morrissey held a book signing in Gothenburg, Sweden today (October 17).

There is something to the parody though, considering the first page of the book goes on for more than four pages. It’s a bit confusing, but still a solid parody. The comedian does have some experience with this particular parody, having previously performed it in a youtube video, spoofing a Stone Roses documentary.

Morrissey Cancels Sale Of Autobiography 3 Days Before Release Date

Morrissey

Morrissey, the former Smiths frontman, has ditched plans to release his autobiography just three days before it was due to be published.

The memoirs were set to document the 54-year-old's life growing up in Manchester, his time with The Smiths - one of Britain's greatest ever bands - and, crucially, his relationship with former song-writing partner Johnny Marr.

During an interview with BBC Radio 4's Front Row, Morrissey said he wanted the book to be released as part of the recognisable Penguin Classic series, despite the publisher rarely bestowing the title upon new writing.

Morrissey Cancels American Tour Dates – Was That His Last Live Tour?

Morrissey

Poor health has forced Morrissey to disappoint his American contingent by cancelling the remaining 22 shows of his U.S tour. This is just the latest health-related performance-stopper for the aging rocker, and it begs the question: has he had enough?

These aren’t minor ailments. Morrissey has been suffering, in recent months, from a bleeding ulcer, a condition of the oesophagus and double pneumonia. All of these are capable of killing a man, so we wouldn’t be surprised if The Smiths star hung up his microphone, and, probably most importantly for his health, eased it up on the controversial comments; bleeding ulcers are often related to stress. And he gets a lot of that every time he makes an allegedly racist comment. "Despite his best efforts to try to continue touring, Morrissey has to take a hiatus and will not be able to continue on the rest of the tour,” explained his publicist in a statement. "Morrissey thanks all of his fans for their well wishes and thoughts."

Health Problems Ruin Morrissey’s U.S Tour – 22 Dates Cancelled

Morrissey

Continuing problems with Morrissey’s health have lead to the cancellation of the last 22 dates on his American tour, effectively ending his involvement in America, for now.

The first gig cancelled was due to be played tomorrow (Mon 18) in Kansas, with shows in Minneapolis, Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Phoenix and Denver also axed. The tour was set to culminate in San Francisco on April 30. "Despite his best efforts to try to continue touring, Morrissey has to take a hiatus and will not be able to continue on the rest of the tour," she said in a statement. "Morrissey thanks all of his fans for their well wishes and thoughts." The controversial 53-year-old has already cancelled 21 shows over the past year – primarily due to pneumonia - raising questions over his ability to continue to tour live. Fans will be able to get refunds for tickets from the place of purchase and Morrissey thanked them for their well wishes. The vegetarian star had previously made sure his March 1 concert at Staples Center in Los Angeles be held with no sales of meat at the venue's outlets, such is his dedication to the cause of vegetarianism.

Pneumonia Diagnoses Leads Morrissey To Cancel Entire Tour

Morrissey

Morissey fans face disappointment once again, after the singer’s continuing health issues have forced him to cancel the remaining dates of his North American tour.

This comes after a number of gigs were scrapped in January, once again because of health issues. The latest development on the former frontman of The Smiths: while in San Francisco earlier this week, Morrissey was diagnosed with double pneumonia. We’re not exactly sure what that is (you’re welcome to google it though), but sadly, it means that the singer will not be able to perform for a while. He cancelled a gig on Saturday and later, this Thursay, another one was axed from the tour schedule. The next concert Morrissey was scheduled to play was Monday in Kansas, but that has now been scrapped, along with the remaining 22 dates of the North American tour.

Morrissey’s management had this to say about the cancellations: "Despite his best efforts to try to continue touring, Morrissey has to take a hiatus and will not be able to continue on the rest of the tour. Morrissey thanks all of his fans for their well wishes and thoughts." Naturally, this comes as a huge letdown to the ticketholders for the various tour stops, but all ticket sales will be refunded in due time and hopefully, Morrissey will be back on his feet (and on tour) sometime this year.

Morrissey Dust-Up Helps 'Duck Dynasty' To Record Breaking Audience

Morrissey

Nearly 9 million people tuned in to 'Duck Dynasty' for Wednesday evening's third-season premiere, A&E's biggest audience ever. The show - about the Robertson family who make products for duck hunters - is now the No.1 rated nonfiction series on cable this year, a remarkable feat, reports the Washington Post.

The show premiered one night after the Duck Dynasty cast appeared on Jimmy Kimmel's ABC late-night show, following a very public dust-up with former Smiths singer Morrissey. Both were invited onto Kimmel's late night show, though Morrissey - a well-known animal rights campaigner - cancelled, calling the Robertsons "animal serial killers." That night on his show, Kimmel said he respected Morrissey's position but that he was unwilling to dump the Robertsons because "they have guns and Morrissey doesn't." He concluded that the Manchester-born singer "keeps finding ways to depress us."

The whole furore worked out well for Duck Dynasty, which had more activity across social-media platforms than American Idol, also drawing a bigger television audience. The show has only been bested by the likes of The Bachelor, Modern Family and the Academy Awards this week.

Morrissey Slams Jimmy Kimmel Over Duck Dynasty Segment

Morrissey Jimmy Kimmel

Morrissey’s cancellation of his appearance on The Jimmy Kimmel Live! was only going to end badly, with a highly principled artist and a chat show host desperate to get a laugh out of anything, clashing in what, really, was the most tedious of ways.

As most of you probably know by now, staunch vegetarian Morrissey dropped out of his scheduled appearance on the show after discovering that Kimmel’s other guests were the Duck Dynasty, an American family who makes products for duck hunters. This provided ammunition for Kimmel to use when the show eventually came around on Tuesday (February 26, 2013); according to Slicing Up Eyeballs, Kimmel said that he sided with the Dynasty because ‘they had guns and Morrissey didn’t’, and also mocked the singer for repeatedly “finding ways to depress us”. The show also featured a skit where the Dynasty hunted for vegetables.

Never one to back down, Morrissey has since issue a statement on fan site True To You, writing “I was disappointed with last night's Jimmy Kimmel Show wherein our smiling host managed to ridicule depression (70% of Americans have experienced depression according to the National Institute of Mental Health). He then found time to ridicule healthy eating (the obesity epidemic in the U.S. costs $147 billion per year in medical expenditure), and he also ridiculed the notion that animals should be entitled to the possession of their own lives.”

No Need To Get In A Flap! Morrissey Refuses To Appear On Jimmy Kimmel Due To Duck Dynasty

Morrissey Jimmy Kimmel

These days, most of what Morrissey does is a bit laughable. His music is no where near as good as his Smiths hey-day and his political actions and comments, which are abundant, seem in many ways self indulgent and attention seeking. His latest stunt is to refuse to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live over his abhorrence of the livelihood of that episode's other guests, reality TV stars from 'Duck Dynasty'.

Morrissey has been a spokesperson for animal rights for a long time, which is lovely and we fully support him in his message. That's where his problem with Duck Dynasty cast members, who are a deep South family from the US whose business is making equipment for duck hunting.

In a statement, Morrissey said he "cannot morally be on a television programme where the cast members of Duck Dynasty will also be guests," but "would be honoured to play the show, if Duck Dynasty were removed." He added: "As far as my reputation is concerned, I can't take the risk of being on a show alongside people who, in effect, amount to animal serial killers. If Jimmy cannot dump Duck Dynasty then we must step away." The singer seems to be missing a trick there, ignoring the possibility of creating some vegan converts in the Duck Dynasty family. Alas, perhaps he was a little short sighted.

Morrissey Cancels Jimmy Kimmel Live TV Appearance In Protest

Morrissey Jimmy Kimmel

Morrissey has been forced to pull out of yet another scheduled appearance, with his jaunt to the US increasingly looking to be in tatters. However, it’s not illness that’s forced him to drop out of the Jimmy Kimmel Live! Show, but his principals – something we’ve seen time and time again from Mozza.

The former Smiths front man has released a statement on the site True To You, which points out that he would have been on the same show as the cast of Duck Dynasty – something that he cannot abide by. “Morrissey is thankful for being invited to perform on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ tomorrow, February 26. However, he cannot morally be on a television program where the cast members of ‘Duck Dynasty’ will also be guests” the statement reads. “Morrissey would be honored to play the show, if Duck Dynasty were removed.” Continuing, the statement quotes Morrissey as saying “As far as my reputation is concerned, I can’t take the risk of being on a show alongside people who, in effect, amount to animal serial killers. If Jimmy cannot dump Duck Dynasty then we must step away.”

Duck Dynasty, if you weren’t sure, is a reality television show on A&E based around the Robertson family, who’ve managed to make their fortune by making products for duck hunters. As a strict vegetarian and animal rights protestor, you can certainly see why Morrissey wouldn’t be up for sharing a couch with them.

Morrissey Tour Show To Serve Vegetarian Food Only In Los Angeles

Morrissey

Morrissey’s sold out concert in Los Angeles on March 1st will be strictly vegetarian, according to a report.

The former Smiths man is of course known for his strong vegetarian stance, which has long worked its way into his songs and lyrics, and he has previous history with regards playing at meat-serving venues as well. In 2009 the singer famously stormed off the stage Coachella after claiming he could smell “burning flesh”, and various reports last year claimed that the Californian event’s organizers promised a meat-free festival if he reformed The Smiths for 2013.

The BBC reports that The Staples Center in LA will not serve any meat on the night of the March 1st, in light of Morrissey urging them to close down their McDonalds stores and banish the sale of “flesh as food”. In a short statement by the artist, he said "I don't look upon it as a victory for me, but a victory for the animals." Of course, at the moment there’s no guarantee Morrissey will even make the concert, given health the issues he’s been suffering from. Currently struggling from a bleeding ulcer, he’s had to postpone a series of US dates, and wont’ be returning until the Live With Jimmy Kimmel TV show on February 26th; should he still be struggling with his recovery, this LA show date could well be ultimately postponed too.

Marr, whose distinctive guitar licks were combined with Morrissey’s song-writing skills to make The Smiths the legendary band that they are, has also played in Modest Mouse and – more recently, joined the three Wakefield brothers The Cribs.

The NME Awards will be held at The Troxy in East London, on Wednesday February 27, 2013, where Marr will collect his gong. Marr’s about to release his debut solo album The Messenger and speaking about the award, said “It is a very nice thing to be getting this award and I am honoured. The NME seems to be good at giving this award to people I like so I’m in good company. I guess it means that some things are alright with the world.” His previous band mate Morrissey won’t be expecting any such honour any time soon; he has fallen out with the magazine on a number of occasions, most recently when they printed an article that he felt had branded him a racist.

The magazine’s editor, Mike Williams, said “All hail Johnny Marr, NME Godlike Genius 2013 and the newest recruit into NME’s holy order of music legends. And what a legend he is! Not content with rewriting the history of music with one of the world’s greatest ever bands, The Smiths, he’s continued to push boundaries and evolve throughout his career, working with some of the best and most exciting artists on the planet.” Johnny follows in the footsteps of 2012’s Godlike Genius, Noel Gallagher, which just goes to show, there’s no justice in the world. Or no huge commitment to chronology, perhaps.

Morrissey's Bleeding Ulcer Forces Him To Cancel 6 Shows

Morrissey The Smiths

Morrissey, ex-frontman of '80s band The Smiths, has been diagnosed with a bleeding ulcer and may need surgery. His ill-health renders him unable to continue with his US tour currently, but is expected to return to the stage in February.

As NME reported on Sunday (27th Jan) Morrissey was suspected to have a bladder infection. However as more tests have been done having been admitted to the Beaumont hospital, in Detroit, it has become apparent that the singer in fact has a bleeding ulcer. As his representative, Lauren Papapietro, said in a statement, reported by SkyNews, he's expected to be well again in time to make his February 9th show in Las Vegas. "Morrissey is expected to make a full recovery and thanks everyone concerned for their support during this time." She said, "Morrissey apologises greatly for any and all inconvenience and looks forward to continuing his US tour."

His US tour had already been postponed after he rapidly returned to England to care for his mother, last October. The cities that shows have been cancelled: Asheville, North Carolina; Nashville, Tennessee; Atlanta, Georgia; Lawrence, Kansas; Clear Lake, Iowa; and Lincoln, Nebraska. It is expected that Morrissey will simply postpone these dates rather than cancelling them entirely.

Meat-Free Festival Promised If The Smiths Reform For Coachella Festival

The Smiths Morrissey Johnny Marr

Coachella Music Festival are still a while away from announcing their headliners for their 2013 event, but if reports are to believed there is one act they're absolutely desperate to get back together for the event. It's believed that the festival organisers are so keen to reunite cult band The Smiths that they have offered to ban meat from the entire event if the British indie band do reform.

There've been long-running rumours of a comeback ever since the group split up way back in 1987, with founding members Morrissey and Johnny Marr reportedly getting offered offered as much as $4.5 million to get back together. The song writing duo have so far stuck to their guns on the matter though, insisting that they're not interested in reuniting. Morrissey now has a large back catalogue of solo records behind, whilst Marr has lent his guitar talents to everyone from Modest Mouse to The Cribs. However, it's now emerged that Coachella have promised staunch vegetarian Morrissey that they would ban all meat products from the Indio, California site for the entire event if he reunited the group for a headline performance.

Morrissey famously stormed offstage at Coachella in 2009 after smelling smoke from the on-site barbecues, and he told Australia's News.com.au that they first made the offer for the 2010 festival. "[After 2009] the agents for Coachella offered a 100 per cent vegetarian event for the following year if I would agree to headline with Johnny Marr as The Smiths" Morrissey commented. "Fascinatingly they made it clear that they would 'not require' the Smiths' bass player or drummer... which I thought certainly said something."

Morrissey Turns Good Samaritan And Helps Ill Lady In Bookstore

Morrissey The Smiths

Morrissey took time out from rallying against the British royal family and meat eaters and turned into a Good Samaritan at the weekend, with it being reported that the outspoken musician tended to an elderly lady who collapsed in a bookstore.

Former front man of The Smiths, Morrissey was browsing shelves at New York City's well-known Strand Bookstore, no doubt looking for some Keates or Yates, on Sunday (September 23rd) when a frail customer standing nearby him was taken ill. Acting quickly, the performer knelt down to comfort the confused woman and offered to fetch her some water before staff came to her aid. An onlooker told Queerty.com, "He picked up her stray belongings and asked if he could get her some water or call for help. She declined and collected her things and moved on. But my friend said she touched Morrissey's cheek in gratitude!"

Continuing, they added "Obviously, she didn't know who he was, just was touched by this act of kindness from a nice British man. He seemed very shaken up and flustered by the incident and left the store soon afterwards without buying anything." Which sounds a bit more like the Morrissey we know and love.
