Biography

Sugababes (formed 1998) Sugababes are the most successful female act of the 21st century in the UK.

History: Keisha Buchanan and Mutya Buena, who had been friends since the age of eight, met Siobhan Donaghy aged 13, at a party. When all the band members were just 14, they were offered a record contract with London Records. They had previously been called Sugababies, but as there was already a band with this name, they changed their moniker to Sugababes.

`Overload' was the band's debut single and made the Top 10. The song was nominated for a BRIT award (for Best Single) and three more hits were released from their debut album, One Touch.

Whilst touring Japan, Siobhan left the group. She was later diagnosed with clinical depression and reports surfaced of in-fights between the three band members. Siobhan was replaced by Heidi Range, a founding member of Atomic Kitten.

Sales of One Touch were not as high as London Records had expected and the band was dropped in 2001.

As the band had already begun writing their second album, with Heidi on board, they searched for a new label, eventually signing with Island Records.

The second album, Angels With Dirty Faces, spawned a number one UK single, `Freak Like Me.' The song was recorded by Richard X and used the backing of a Gary Numan song and the lyrics from an Adina Howard track.

The album debuted at number two in the UK album chart, eventually being certified triple platinum and sold over a million copies in Europe. The band performed live at the 2003 BRIT Awards, where they won `Best British Dance Act.'

Sugababes' third album Three was released late 2003 and was nominated for three more BRIT Awards (`Best Album,' `Best Group' and `Best Dance Act') and reached number three in the UK Album chart. From the album, the group had a number one single with `Hole In The Head.'

In 2004, the band were involved in a re-recording of Band Aid's `Do they Know It's Christmas?' in aid of famine relief in Sudan. Chris Martin, Dido and Robbie Williams were also included in the release.

The band's fourth album was entitled Taller In More Ways and was produced by Dallas Austin. The lead single, `Push the Button' went in to the charts at number one in the UK and sold over 300,000 copies in the UK alone. It was also the most popular song that they had released in the US.

In December 2005, it was announced that Mutya Buena had left the band, for personal reasons but an announcement on their website stated that she would remain best of friends with Heidi and Keisha. Mutya's replacement was Amelle Berrabah.

Sugababes were contractually obliged to release the greatest hits collection, Overloaded: The Singles Collection. An accompanying DVD was also released, with 14 of the band's music videos and karaoke versions of the songs.

The band's first number one in the UK, with Berrabeh in the band, was a collaboration with Girls Aloud. They covered Aerosmith and Run DMC's `Walk This Way' as a charity single for Comic Relief.

Sugababes chose to work with William Orbit on their next studio album, as well as Dallas Austin and Dr. Luke. With the release of `About You Now,' Sugababes became the first girl band to top the UK chart on downloads alone. `About You Now' was nominated for a 2008 BRIT Award for Best British Single.

Seven British Bands That Couldn't Crack America

Oasis Paul Weller Sugababes Manic Street Preachers Girls Aloud Take That Stereophonics

The histories of American and British pop music is inextricably linked. Often, the same bands that enjoy success in the States also hit the charts in Old Blighty, and vice versa. Think The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, or Nirvana headlining Reading ’92 – common language and similar culture make the transition easy for many.

However, there are notable exceptions on this front – artists who, however massive they make it in Britain, for whatever reason can’t crack America. Here, we look at seven of the biggest British bands who just couldn’t make it out there.

Sugababes first formed in 1998 when Mutya and Siobhan were just thirteen years old. Keisha, Mutya's best friend, joined the group after initially showing up to watch a rehearsal. However, Siobhan left the group in 2001 amid reports of fighting between the members, and publically denounced Keisha Buchanan as a bully. She was replaced by former Atomic Kitten Heidi Range, and the group went on to achieve success with songs such as 'Round Round' and 'Freak Like Me' from their album 'Angels With Dirty Faces' which charted at number two.

Girl Bands Walk This Way For Comic Relief

Girls Aloud Aerosmith Aloud Desperate Housewives Sugababes Dwayne Johnson

Girls Aloud and the Sugababes are to record a charity single for Comic Relief.

The girl bands will join up to record the 1980s classic Walk This Way, a smash hit for hip hop group Run-DMC and The Rock band Aerosmith.

Speaking at the launch of the 11th Red Nose Day, band members said they were excited by the prospect of recording the track and making a difference.

In a star-studded affair at the London Eye, Girls Aloud singer Kimberly Walsh said: "It's a fantastic song and hopefully will raise tons of money for people living in really difficult situations here and in Africa."

Meanwhile, the Sugababes' Keisha said she was "really pleased to be working with Girls Aloud" on a song which is an "all-time classic collaboration".

One person missing from the event was Nadine Coyle, who is believed to be with her boyfriend Jesse Metcalf, star of Desperate Housewives, in the US, amid rumours she may move there permanently.

Comic Relief has raised over £425 million to date, with the latest Red Nose Day set for March 16th.

The Sugababes - Interview

Sugababes Interview
It's a warm, sunny day outside, but life for the Sugababes is all Go! We caught up with the Keisha, Mutya & Heidi as they promote their new single, 'Hole in the Head' & upcoming album "Three".

CM: So girls, how's the album going? Are you excited about touring?

S: (Mutya) We're just promoting the new single at the moment, Hole in the Head, so hopefully next year in the first couple of months we're gonna start the new tour. It'll be our second tour and yeah, we're really enjoying it at the moment cos we had a bit of time off, four, five months, to actually do the album and then at the same time do a few of the festivals like Glastonbury, Witnness, T in the Park, Party in the Park and, stuff like that. But right now we're just promoting and doing interviews and things like that. Having read the press release calling the girls an alternative to the slick, Girls Aloud-style girl groups, I went into this interview with some reservations about

how true that is. However, it's when Mutya mentions the festivals the Sugababes have done that you begin to realise that they aren't actually you're typical girl band at all particularly when you consider they played the traditionally Indie and rock festivals. They seem to love doing festivals as well as gigs and Heidi is keen to stress the crossover link as well as the live aspect.

CM: And Glastonbury? How was it for you?
