Catherine Zeta-Jones & Michael Douglas Taking Time Apart: What Could Have Caused The Cracks?

Catherine Zeta Jones Michael Douglas

Actors Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones have been confirmed to be taking some time apart so they can figure out what's going on in their marriage. A publicist's statement, via BBC News, said that the couple had taken the decision to take a break to "evaluate and work on their marriage."

Michael Douglas
Michael & Catherine Aren't Even In The Same Country At The Moment.

The past year has clearly taken its toll on the couple, who have been married for 13 years, after Douglas battled with throat cancer (now in remission) that he blamed on oral sex, Catherine was announced to be suffering with Bipolar II disorder and Michael's son, Cameron, from a previous marriage was incarcerated on drugs charges. A source speaking to People emphasised "The stress has taken a toll on their marriage."

RED 2 Review

OK

That A-list cast of "retired, extremely dangerous" spies is back, coasting through another amiable but uninspired action-comedy. It may be occasionally funny, but the script is so lazy that it never does anything with the characters or situations. So there's never even a hint of suspense.

In the years since the events of 2010's RED, Frank (Willis) has been trying to live quietly with Sarah (Parker). But trouble seeks them out when their pal Marvin (Malkovich) is the target of a car bomb, and Frank discovers that MI6 and the CIA have sent assassins to kill him: his ruthless former colleague Victoria (Mirren) and the fiendishly unstoppable Han (Lee), respectively. So Frank, Sarah and Marvin head to Paris to solve the mess, crossing paths with Frank's ex, the seductive Katya (Zeta-Jones). Sarah isn't happy about this, but tags along to London, where they locate a nutty scientist (Hopkins) who has the key to all the chaos: namely that they need to get to Moscow to stop a rogue nuke.

As in the first film, the plot bounces along merrily without bothering with either logic or subtext. This is just a silly story about goofy old killers, and the film's main joke is seeing Mirren in camouflage firing a machine-gun. At least the cast shows that they're still feisty, taking on each other with gusto as they try to steal every scene. Malkovich's surreal humour, Mirren's snappy punchlines, Zeta-Jones' purring sexuality and Hopkins' scatter-brained genius are pretty funny, while Willis and Parker get the most thankless roles as a couple still working out their relationship.

The Reviews Are In: A Narrow Pass For 'RED 2'

Bruce Willis Mary-Louise Parker Anthony Hopkins Catherine Zeta Jones

The Bruce Willis starring action comedy Red 2 is going into opening weekend with lukewarm reviews – more of a gentle maroon, if we’re going with the color metaphor. The film chronicles the events of Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) life three years after the original, when the former CIA agent has settled into a comfortable life with his damsel in distress from the first movie Sarah Ross (Mary-Louise Parker), but the couple are forced to come out of retirement by the murder of a friend and their own framing for a Cold War era mission by one of those pesky government agencies. As far as plots go, this one definitely suffers from sequel fatigue, which seems to be what most reviews hold against the film. However, various reviewers find various redeeming aspects of the action, driven by gun-toting pensioners.

The L.A. Times focuses on the commercial side of things, noting that both audiences and the studio already know that the “Red” concept works and it gets a specific audience into theatres. The question now is, with the novelty wearing off and sequel fatigue beginning to set in, can Summit repeat the hole in one?

Red 2 Reviews: Is The Comedy Sequel Worth Watching? [Trailer]

Bruce Willis Helen Mirren Catherine Zeta Jones John Malkovich Mary-Louise Parker Lee Byung-hun

After Red 2 enjoyed its star-studded premiere it's time to get down to the nitty-gritty of whether 2010's Red was deserving of a sequel or not. The Hollywood Reporter's Justin Lowe mulls over the highs and lows of the sharp new instalment of the crime comedy. With regards to the first film - where former black ops agent is forced back into action after his life is threatened by an assassin - THR doubts that Red 2 has "a whole lot new to offer" over the original premise.

Red 2 sees Frank Moses (Willis) trying to lead a normal life with his partner Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker) but is called out of retirement again by his paranoid chum Marvin (John Malkovich) who proposes a new mission - to find a nuclear device that's also being hunted out by the government, some terrorists and even some assassins.

Matt Damon And Luciana Barroso Renewing Vows Over The Weekend

Matt Damon Luciana Barroso Jennifer Garner Catherine Zeta Jones Michael Douglas Ben Affleck

While some of us are still struggling to get their bearings after winter, Matt Damon and wife Luciana Barroso decided to jet off to the tropical island of St. Lucia to renew their vows, PEOPLE confirms.

With a $600 000 price tag and some extremely tight security around the island price tag, the ceremony is hardly quaint, but it’s still an intimate affair. The couple are set to exchange vows in front of their four daughters and some close friends, including Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, as well as Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael DouglasThe Damon family have been together since 2005, when they married in a modest civil ceremony in New York city. They met in 2003, while Damon was shooting Stuck on You and Lucia was bartending.

While reports that the resort is being closed down for the ceremony have been discredited by E!News, the St. Lucia authorities are still taking serious security measures for the event.

Excellent

Thrillers don't get much more enjoyable than this one, which shifts cleverly from an issue-based drama to an intriguing mystery and finally into riotously camp mayhem. Over his career, Soderbergh has proven himself adept at all three approaches, and the way he and writer Burns morph from one to the other is so mercilessly entertaining that we can't help but smile. And the cast is having a great time playing along with them.

It starts as an expose of psychotropic drugs, as Emily (Mara) struggles with depression after her husband Martin (Tatum) is released following a four-year prison term for insider trading. Emily's therapist Dr Banks (Law) prescribes a series of anti-anxiety pills to help her, adjusting the medication until the side effects even out. But something still isn't right, and a fatal incident leads to a criminal trial. Meanwhile, Banks begins his own investigation into the case, consulting Emily's previous therapist (Zeta-Jones). But the fallout from all of this is threatening both his career and his marriage to Dierdre (Shaw).

Soderbergh gives the film a seductive tone that's irresistible, with his own gleaming cinematography and witty editing, plus a teasing Thomas Newman score. This allows the actors to create layered characters who can constantly surprise us along the way. Law holds our sympathies as a desperate man trying against all odds to get his life back, while Zeta-Jones is icy and dismissive until her character takes a lively turn about halfway in. But it's Mara who's the real revelation in a tricky role. As Emily's world seems to shift and collapse around her, she reveals an astonishing array of emotions and intentions.

Catherine Zeta-Jones And Jennifer Hudson Will Bring Back The Sequins And Glitter At The Oscars

Catherine Zeta Jones Jennifer Hudson Hugh Jackman Jennifer Lawrence

Some big names have been added to the Oscar performers list this year – people like Jennifer Hudson, Catherine Zeta-Jones and the cast of Les Miserables will be joining already announced performers, including the cast of Les Miserables and some other massive names.

You might be sensing a pattern here. That’s right, this year’s Academy awards will be paying tribute to one of Hollywood’s most beloved format of the past decade – the good ol’ musical. The performances will highlight some of the most successful film musicals of the past ten years, including Dreamgirls, Chicago and of course Les Mis. That list of performers is beginning to make a whole lot more sense, right?

The show’s producers, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, made the announcement about the show’s theme last month and since then more and more performers have steadily been added to the list. We are pleased to have been able to amass so much talent to create the celebration of musicals of the last decade that we envisioned,” Zadan and Meron said in a joint statement.

Updates From Sundance Film Festival And The London Critics' Circle Awards Plus Trailers For, Stoker, Emperor And Red 2

As the Sundance Film Festival continues in Utah, buzz is emerging about the new Nicole Kidman movie Stoker, in which she plays the widowed mother of teen Mia Wasikowska as they deal with the arrival of the unexpectedly sexy Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode). From the director of Old Boy, a new trailer depicts the film as a stylish, warped and very black comedy. It comes to cinemas on March 1st.

Here in Britain, two leading awards contenders open this week. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln stars Daniel Day-Lewis, the front-runner in the Best Actor race. This would be his unprecedented third win in the category. And Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty stars Jessica Chastain, who is currently the favourite for Best Actress, although Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook is giving her some serious competition.

But no one should write off iconic French actress Emmanuelle Riva's astonishing turn in Amour. She won the London Critics' Circle Film Award for Best Actress on Sunday. The London critics also gave Amour their Film of the Year title, and it's up for Best Picture at the Oscars as well.

Red 2 Trailer

Following the perilous events of the first movie, former CIA agent Frank Moses tries yet again to retire quietly with his young partner Sarah. However, he is soon chased down by his paranoid buddy Marvin Boggs who isn't taking to retirement as well as Frank is and is determined to set out on a new mission; to find a nuclear device that is being hunted by a group government officials, terrorists and brutal assassins. Meanwhile, the aging MI6 agent Victoria is mildly curious to learn that she has been contracted to hunt and kill Frank despite the pair being friends. 'Red 2' is set to be full of more death-defying adventures, dry humour and nigh on impossible missions as the Retired, Extremely Dangerous crew get together once more.

'Red 2' is the follow up from the 2010 movie directed by Robert Schwentke ('The Time Traveller's Wife') and based on the graphic novel mini-series created by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner on DC Comics' Homage. This time we have an all new director, Oscar winner Dean Parisot ('Galaxy Quest', 'Fun with Dick and Jane'), and two returns from screenwriters Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber ('Battleship', 'Whiteout'). It's an action comedy due for release in the UK on August 2nd 2013.

Helping Other Sufferers, Catherine Zeta Jones Opens Up About Bipolar Disorder

Catherine Zeta Jones Michael Douglas

Catherine Zeta Jones has spoken to In Style magazine about her long-standing battle with mental illness. In an attempt to erase the stigma associated with manic depression and other similar illness, she revealed that since being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, she has actually started to appreciate life more than she did previously.

The 43 year-old actress was diagnosed with bipolar II disorder – a form of manic depression – in April last year, when she was admitted to a rehabilitation clinic in the US. At the time, her husband, actor Michael Douglas was recovering from his treatment for throat cancer. “I’m not the kind of person who likes to shout out my personal issues from the rooftops,” said the actress, “but, with my bipolar becoming public, I hope fellow sufferers will know it is completely controllable… I hope I can help remove any stigma attached to it, and that those who don’t have it under control will seek help with all that is available to treat it.”

Zeta Jones admitted that one of the “smartest” things she’s done, since she’s been learning to live with her illness, is to stop going online and googling comments about herself, made by others. “I just stopped. Cold turkey. And it’s so liberating.” She went on to say that the last 18 months, since her diagnosis, have been as scary as they have been enlightening. She said that it’s been “an intense time in good ways and bad. You find out who you really are and who are you are married to. You find things inside yourself you never imagined were there.”

Emily Hawkins once thought that her relationship with her husband couldn't be more perfect, however she is forced to come to terms with his absence when he is sent to prison and therefore struggles to cope with her mixed feelings and subsequent anxiety on his return. In a bid to progress to feelings of normality again, Emily consults a psychiatrist who prescribes her a drug to help her cope again. It seems to work well and gradually begins to help rebuild Emily and her husband's relationship. However, things take a tragic turn when a woman is mysteriously murdered and Emily and her psychiatrist seem to be the two people who are facing blame. Not only that, but when evidence arises suggesting the pair had a relationship other than a professional one, Emily stops knowing who she can trust anymore.

This complex psychological thriller is set to 'wow' cinematic audiences with its thrilling plot, all star cast and direction from the Oscar winning Steven Soderbergh ('Ocean's Eleven', 'Contagion', 'Magic Mike'). With a screenplay written by the BAFTA nominated Scott Z. Burns ('The Bourne Ultimatum', 'Contagion'), it's nothing short of expertly put together and definitely in line for several film award nominations on its release on March 15th 2013.

Rock Of Ages Review

Very Good
This raucous trawl through 80s power ballads, rock anthems and gigantic hair is a lot of fun, partly because it throws so many big stars into against-type roles in which they get to sing and dance. But the plot couldn't be any thinner or it wouldn't exist at all.

Small-town girl Sherrie (Hough) takes the bus to 1987 Hollywood to become a rock star. There she meets Drew (Boneta), who has the same dream and works in the famed Bourbon Room on the Sunset Strip. He convinces the owner (Baldwin) to hire her as a barmaid just as diva-rocker Stacee Jaxx (Cruise) comes to play a major gig. Buzzing around him are a Rolling Stone journalist (Akerman) wanting an interview and a right-winger (Zeta-Jones) trying to protect the children from the evils of rock-n-roll.
