Darkside 'Psychic' - After an EP in 2011, Darkside released their debut album this year. The duo - the project of Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington - gave as good as they got on 'Psychic', honing their talents as individual musicians. Wonderfully crisp textures ride over its entirety, creating a rich, confident ambience.

The Strokes - Comedown Machine Album Cover

Recommended Albums... New York garage-rock new-wavers The Strokes are on album number five and Comedown Machine marks a return to form for Julian Casablancas & co. Whilst they may not be trying to replicate the pared down sound of their now-iconic debut This Is It, they have at least re-captured some of that raw energy. With a sound now owing as much to 80s synth bands such as A-Ha and Human League as it does to their beloved garage rock idols.

As a result, The Strokes, circa 2013 finds the band fully rejuvenated and seemingly enjoying themselves. They may struggle to regain the popularity that they enjoyed when the band first emerged but they have at least done themselves proud with Comedown Machine.

Peace - In Love Album Review

Peace release their much-anticipated debut record at the end of this month after riding on tones of hype, which really ramped up with the release of their 'Delicious' EP at the end of last year. The Birmingham 4-piece do have a lot going for them though. The hype needs to be believed when it comes to Peace. Oh yes. It was 'Follow Baby' that got everyone nattering because of its Britpop riff, teamed with a carefree chorus about living forever (how very Oasis) and the striking colour video. But Peace are not a carbon copy of the 90s because that era's sound is rung out like a wet tea towel, leaving its damp residue for some recent likenesses and space for their individuality to absorb into.

Peace - In Love Album Review

Lead single 'Wraith' and 'Delicious', beginning with a nice popping sound, are dance floor friendly and sound more individual to Peace. The quieter offerings on 'In Love', do the same like 'Float Forever' and the heady 'California Daze' - "She tastes like sunlight and she's always gonna be there in the back of your mind".

There are so many different influences from various trends and crammed into 'In Love' the tracks seem to withhold a flashback from the past twenty or years so in music to be triggered. It's not a bad thing by any means, it makes this record more engaging and fun. But a second album from Peace following the same correlation could get a little tedious.

Albums of Note... Dave Grohl managed to rally a group of rock’s big players together to record an album designed to accompany his Sound City documentary – about the legendary LA recording studio of the same name. Amongst the stars making an appearance on Sound City: Real to Reel are Sir Paul McCartney, Josh Homme and Stevie Nicks; the latter of whom provides one of the album’s highlights:

“[The] tracks that do command attention… are worth wading through the mire for. One can only assume, for instance, that Lindsay Buckingham and the rest of Fleetwood Mac will be kicking themselves upon hearing 'You Can't Fix This,' because this is simply the greatest Fleetwood Mac song that never was.”

Stocking Fillers: Best Christmas Songs of 2012

Many consider Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' the last true Christmas song to be released; it's hard to believe that was back in 1994! Since then, there's been a sputtering of jovial Christmas releases, but nothing that seems to stand the test of time. 2012 has actually delivered a handful of relatively acceptable additions - both cover of classic tracks and original tracks. Here are a few of the tracks you might be hearing more of over Christmas.
