Not Jewish Or American, But Ruby Rose Is Still The Perfect 'Batwoman'

Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose has deactivated her social media accounts after receiving backlash over being appointed to play Batwoman in a forthcoming new series. Apparently, she's neither gay enough nor Jewish enough to play the role - but why is there so much vitriol regarding her new role?

People are trying to cite the news as an example of white-washing and misrepresentation of the LGBT community. But it's actually the complete opposite, and Ruby Rose certainly doesn't deserve the hate for it.

Ruby Rose Left Disgusted By Tabloid Body Shamers

Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose has hit out at members of the press who have unfairly criticised her for her weight and her skin following her appearance on the red carpet at the 'Pitch Perfect 3' premiere in Australia. She was clearly saddened at being accused of having an eating disorder.

The 31-year-old model and actress is starting to realise that being a rising star isn't without it's negatives. She posted an Instagram story shaming tabloids who accused her of having an eating disorder, using the worst red carpet images of her they could find and comparing them to older shots of her when, she claims, she had an under-active thyroid.

Pitch Perfect 3 Trailer

It has been a few years since the Barden Bellas graduated from college, and while they have largely managed to stay in touch, they have not performed together at musical World Championships for a very long time. Needless to say, with their various career ventures not going as well as they had hoped and the media still keeping a close eye on them and willing them to fail, they are missing their beloved a cappella sing-a-longs a lot right now.

Beca Mitchell (Anna Kendrick) has quit her job out of boredom, Flo Fuentes (Chrissie Fit) is serving on a city juice stall, Chloe Beale (Brittany Snow) is struggling to get into vet school and Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) is now a not so popular impersonator called Fat Amy Winehouse. But maybe they can give their musical passions a boost with a new kind of show...

Aubrey Posen (Anna Camp) has an idea of trying to obtain an invite to perform at a competition show in Europe set up by the United Service Organizations (USO) in support of the US Army soldiers. It's not like they have anything else to do at the moment so the group are all for it. However, armed only with their voices, they have quite the competition as many of their rivals are bands with actual instruments.

Ruby Rose: 'Keanu Reeves Sets The Tone For John Wick'

Ruby Rose Keanu Reeves

In John Wick: Chapter 2, Keanu Reeves’ assassin faces a whole new group of enemies that once again force him out of retirement.

But his greatest opponent is Ares, a female assassin played by Ruby Rose. The Australian might be Reeves’ enemy on screen, but off screen she has nothing but praise for the franchise’s star, whose laid back attitude set the tone for life on set.

XXx: Return Of Xander Cage Review

OK

It's been 15 years since Vin Diesel walked away from his XXX role, killing off the character before the 2005 sequel. Both films were pretty terrible, mindless action connected by the thinnest imaginable plots. And this franchise relaunch is just as random, with a nonsensical thriller storyline that exists merely to string together a sequence of explosive stunt trickery. Thankfully, this time the cast and crew make it clear that they know how preposterous this is.

No, Xander (Diesel) isn't dead. He's whizzing around the jungles of the Dominican Republic, wooing sweaty, scantily clad babes and keeping the locals cheering at his exploits. Then CIA black ops director Marke (Toni Collette) appears to draft him back into the XXX programme, because she needs to recapture a gadget terrorists are using to drop satellites from orbit onto carefully chosen targets. OK, sure. X assembles a team of his old pals (actually newcomers, played by Kris Wu, Ruby Rose and Rory McCann), plus a hot computer geek (Nina Dobrev), and chases down the team of equally extreme baddies (Donnie Yen, Deepika Padukone, Tony Jaa and Michael Bisping). And as they head to London, the Philippines and Detroit, everyone realises that there's something else going on here.

There probably isn't a law of physics that isn't broken in this movie. These characters fly, are shot, fall from great heights and are blown to smithereens, but emerge unscathed, apart from their excessive tattoos (Xander has somehow redesigned his logo neck art for the reboot). Refreshingly, everyone keeps their tongues firmly planted in their cheeks, winking at the camera at each ridiculous moment. Such as the chase in which motorcycles magically transform into water-bikes. Or when Xander does a spot of Alpine skiing through a rainforest. Or the frankly jaw-dropping weightless fight scene in a power-diving airplane.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage Trailer

Xander Cage has led quite a life, he's been an extreme sports celebrity with his own TV show, worked as an undercover spy for the National Security Agency and saved the world from a deadly toxin being released. Xander wasn't exactly the most obvious person to become a spy as his celebrity status made him know around the world but his arrogance and known run-ins with the cops are will publicised.

He was recruited by NSA Agent Augustus Gibbons who saw potential in the daredevil. To test his skills, Gibbon's dropped Cage into a number of life threatening situations including an armed robbery and an escape from a cocaine plantation run by violent cartel bosses. Having successfully completed his tests, Xander found himself face to face with a Russia mobster who was planning to release toxic matter which is capable of killing millions. His mission was a success and he also found love with a Russian FSB agent called Yelena. Realising that the life of a spy isn't all it's cut out to be, the pair retire to Bora Bora.

Years later a crooked agent called Cobb is thought to have assassinated Cage leading to Gibbon's to find a new XXX agent - a title that only seems temporary for its holders.

The GLAAD 2015 Report Puts LGBT Representation On Television Into Perspective

Laverne Cox Ruby Rose

The media seems to be determined to spread the message of support for members of the LGBT community, and indeed huge steps have been taken in the world of showbiz to better represent the sexual and gender fluidity of humankind as a whole. However, the fact remains that only 4% of main characters on primetime shows diversify into LGBT territory.

For ten years, GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) has compiled an annual Where We Are on TV report, exploring just how much the industry has changed/is changing. While there is, indeed, a significant rise in the number of LGBT characters on our screens, there are often stereotypes attached and, as GLAAD CEO and President Sarah Kate Ellis revealed in the report, 'LGBT stories must go far beyond the common "coming out" narrative.'
