Childhood: Hugh Hefner was born in Chicago, Illinois to teachers Grace Caroline and Glenn Lucius Hefner. Hefner studied at Sayre Elementary School before moving on to Steinmetz High School. Between 1944 and 1946, Hefner served as a writer for a military newspaper. Following this, Hefner studied a B.A. in psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.
Career Hefner: began working as a copywriter for 'Esquire' magazine, but left them in 1952 due to payment issues. The following year, he mortgaged his furniture and gathered together investors to help him fund 'Playboy' magazine. The first issue was published in December 1953, and featured images from Marilyn Monroe's 1949 naked photo shoot, which drew in a huge number of readers. The magazine continued, steadily gaining a reputation for the infamously informative interviews and it's determined stance on racial, sexual and gender equality, although this was often overshadowed by the more obvious pornographic aspects of the magazine. While respected throughout the 1960s, the magazine was soon viewed as little more than a porn magazine, leading to it being banned in several countries. In addition to the magazine, Hefner hosted his own variety and talk show, 'Playboy's Penthouse', which first aired on 24th October, 1959. The show ran for two seasons, ending in 1961. The show was followed up by 'Playboy After Dark' which first aired in 1969 and again ran for two seasons. It took on the same variety and talk show format of 'Penthouse', and the combined two shows earned Hefner as star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Personal Life: In 1949, Hefner married university student Mildred Williams, and the couple had two children called Christie and David, before divorcing in 1959. In 1989, he married Kimberley Conrad and they remained together until 2010. Conrad had been 'Playmate of the Year' the year before their marriage, and the couple had two children, Marston and Cooper. On 31st December, 2012, Hefner Crystal Harris, despite their 60-year age difference. In addition to his three wives, Hefner has had several partners. Between 1969 and 1976, Hefner dated Barbi Benton.
