Kong: Skull Island Review

Excellent

After the success of 2014's Godzilla reboot, the Warner Bros monsters get their own franchise, continuing with this King Kong prequel. It's a ripping adventure, cleverly directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) to resemble a snarky Apocalypse Now remake with added gigantic beasts. And the eclectic cast makes sure that there's plenty of comedy, villainy and heroics to draw the audience in.

It's 1973, and Bill (John Goodman) is taking a pair of scientists (Corey Hawkins and Jing Tian) to an uncharted island to verify reports of prehistoric creatures before the Russians can get there first. En route, they stop in Vietnam to collect a mercenary adventurer (Tom Hiddleston), a photojournalist (Brie Larson) and a helicopter squadron led by Packard (Samuel L. Jackson). But their noisy arrival on the island enrages towering monkey Kong (mo-capped by Terry Notary and Toby Kebbell, who also plays a member of the team). With their choppers grounded, the main job now is to get out of here alive. And after discovering a castaway WWII pilot (John C. Reilly), they learn that Kong is actually protecting the world from far scarier monsters.

The story is told with a blast of dry humour, weaving in lots of sharp banter along with a collection of iconic 70s rock anthems. This gung-ho approach makes the movie energetically good fun, obscuring the fact that it's not particularly deep or meaningful. There are big themes gurgling away under the surface (such as the way blind militaristic action unearths dangers far worse than the perceived enemy), but these things remain subliminal, only barely visible amid the fast-paced action and big effects mayhem. That it all leads to some heavily animated monster-vs-monster destruction is hardly surprising. But when a movie is this light on its feet and so cheerfully frenetic, the audience is really only interested in hanging on for the ride.

Tom Hiddleston Insists Nerves Were To Blame For Cringeworthy Golden Globes Speech

Tom Hiddleston

Receiving a Golden Globe Award has got to be one of the most nerve-wracking things in the world, so much so that it is probably really easy to mess up your acceptance speech. As a result, poor Tom Hiddleston has been forced to apologise for his garbled statement about South Sudan.

Tom HiddlestonTom Hiddleston has apologised for his shambolic Golden Globes speech

Well, we can't all be Meryl Streep. Tom Hiddleston stepped up to accept the award of Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series for 'The Night Manager', but ended up confusing the majority of the star-studded audience (namely Christian Slater) with a speech about his visit to war-torn South Sudan.

Chris Hemsworth And Tom Hiddleston Visit Children's Hospital As 'Thor' Characters

Chris Hemsworth Tom Hiddleston

Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston both took time out of their busy filming schedules to visit a children’s hospital in Australia, both of them dressed as their Thor: Ragnarok characters Thor and Loki.

The two Hollywood A-listers dropped by Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in South Brisbane, taking a break from filming the third Thor movie, and their ultimate ‘frenemy’ Asgard god characters put aside their differences to entertain the young patients – or “the real superheroes”, as they called them – as they arrived on Tuesday (August 23rd).

Tom Hiddleston Felt Faint Preparing For High-Rise

Tom Hiddleston Ben Wheatley

Tom Hiddleston leads the ensemble cast of Ben Wheatley's new thriller High-Rise, based on the J.G. Ballard novel. And it's Ballard's bleak world view that drew him to the project.

"What Ballard is interested in is who we really are beneath the veneer of sophistication and good manners," Hiddleston says. "So at what point do your manners break down, and when does your more animalistic nature emerge?"

I Saw The Light - In The Studio Clip

Hank Williams was one of the most iconic country stars America has ever seen, moving crowds to their feet (and often to tears) with such hits as 'Lovesick Blues', 'Hey Good Lookin'' and 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry'. But away from the mic stand, his life was often in turmoil. Plagued by crippling chronic back pain from his spina bifida occulta, he found himself repeatedly drawn to alcohol which made figures in the music industry refuse to work with him, and later other substances including painkillers and morphine prescribed by a fraudulent doctor. If that wasn't bad enough, his love life was hardly blissful either; both his marriages were marred by legal misfortunes and can only be described as tumultuous and unstable. By his 20s he had developed heart problems, which ultimately led to the saddening and untimely demise of one of country music's most unforgettable legends.

Crimson Peak Takes Hiddleston And Chastain To The Dark Side

Tom Hiddleston Jessica Chastain

Obviously, Crimson Peak isn't the first time Tom Hiddleston has played a complex villain on-screen, having made his name as Thor's mischievous brother Loki in the Marvel movies.

Hiddleston likes mixing up his roles. "It's a cliche, but it's true," he laughs. "Variety is the spice of life! And when I got into acting, I never wanted to play one type of role. The actors I loved the most growing up were people who could move between genres, between character types. It just happens that Thomas Sharpe in this and Loki are a little bit darker, but the reason I've chosen the projects I've chosen is to prove to myself and other people that I'm more than that. Perhaps it's to prove that I'm not who you think I am. I think part of the pleasure I get from acting is in defying expectations: my own and everyone else's."

Crimson Peak Review

Weak

Gifted Mexican filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) makes an odd misstep with this overwrought gothic horror thriller, which is so bloated that it's more silly than scary. At least it features a starry cast that has a lot of fun with the characters, providing some emotional undercurrents as things get increasingly crazed. But the truth about this film is that it's a haunted house movie with ghosts that aren't remotely frightening. And worse yet, they're essentially irrelevant to the story.

It's set in late-1800s Buffalo, as young aspiring writer Edith (Mia Wasikowska) is unsure about the romantic advances of her childhood friend Alan (Charlie Hunnam), who is now a hunky doctor. But he fades into the background when the dashing Sir Thomas (Tom Hiddlestone) arrives from England seeking funding from Edith's father (Jim Beaver) for a machine to mine valuable clay from his crumbling ancestral home. As he sweeps Edith off her feet, Thomas' sister Lucille (Jessica Chastain) enters the picture with a clearly nefarious plan of her own. Sure enough, Thomas whisks Edith off to get married and return to the family mansion, a freaky towering wreck that oozes red clay. Or that might be blood. And since Edith has a history of seeing ghosts, the house feels particularly crowded to her.

The spirits are rendered as stretched-out skeletons surrounded by spidery wisps. And in England they're of course blood-red. Oddly, they merely seem to be observers to this story, never actually doing much proper menacing. And since they look faintly ridiculous it isn't easy to muster up the dread required to make this work as a horror movie. Everything else on-screen is just as absurd. The mansion looks more like an elaborately dilapidated over-sized movie set than a neglected manor house. Thankfully, Del Toro packs every scene with witty details and a lurid colour scheme that keeps the audience on its toes.

Tom Hiddleston Swerves 'Ben-Hur' For King Kong Epic 'Skull Island'

Tom Hiddleston

On the same day that Jack Huston was confirmed for Paramount's 'Ben-Hur', Tom Hiddleston - the man apparently sought for that role - has been confirmed for Legendary's 'Skull Island'. The movie will explore the origins of King Kong.

Tom HiddlestonTom Hiddleston has opted for 'Skull Island'

Previous King King movies have briefly explored the island before the ape hit New York City, though Skull Island will "take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions." As HitFix notes, the "parallels" could imply that we'll see a battle between Kong and Godzilla, who is also the property of Legendary Pictures. This is strengthened by the fact that Max Borenstein, who co-wrote Godzilla, is penning Skull Island.
