Gold Trailer

Gold is more than a valuable commodity for Kenny Wells, to him it's an obsession. The year is 1988 and Wells lives in Reno with his partner, Kay. The balding, fast-aging man is constantly down on his luck and often resorts to pawning his partner's possessions just to get hold of a little money.

The wannabe businessman attempts to start many new ventures but constantly finds himself being turned away. One day Wells awakes from his slumber and recalls a vivid dream telling him to go find Gold in unchartered territory. Kenny has little knowledge of how to make it work but knows that this is the big break he's been waiting for.

Teaming up with geologist Michael Acosta, Wells tells Acosta about the land he feels is rich with unmined gold reserves in Indonesia. Talking Acosta into the project, they begin their ambitious dig with basic supplies and minimal investment. As their workers begin to see that their efforts are not garnering any results they begin to leave and everything looks like it's going against the Americans.

Disney Re-Makes Family Classic 'Pete's Dragon', But It's Not A Musical

Disney Bryce Dallas Howard Robert Redford

Nostalgia is certainly the order of the day at Walt Disney Studios, with the film company determined to update some of the family favourites in the next few years. One classic to be given a contemporary makeover is 1977's 'Pete's Dragon', which has just arrived on screens.

Bryce Dallas HowardBryce Dallas Howard plays Grace the forest ranger in 'Pete's Dragon'

The iconic Oscar nominated musical, which was a live action epic featuring an animated dragon, has returned; though this time without the sing-a-longs and with Elliott the dragon becoming a CGI masterpiece. Those who remember the original directed by Don Chaffey will know it as a story about an orphan on the run from his cruel adoptive parents, who is guided to the safety of a town in New England by this enormous fire-breathing creature with the power of invisibility. Elliott manages to wreak havoc on the town though, leaving Pete initially only welcomed by Nora and her father who live in a lighthouse.

Bryce Dallas Howard Disney

"I was brought up on Disney and loved the original animated version," she says. "I'm exactly the age that is the sweet spot for that film." And after starring in a few grown-up films (including 50/50, The Help and Jurassic World), she was enthusiastic about making a family movie. "I'm extremely protective of my own children and what I let them watch," she says. "When I was reading the script, I felt absolutely transported and my heart was moved. I felt this was something I would be so proud to be a part of because I feel it's a wonderful story for children."

Bryce Dallas Howard and Wes Bentley in Pete's Dragon

And the irony of moving from dinosaurs to dragons wasn't lost on her. "I shot Jurassic World, and then just a few months later Pete's Dragon," Howard says. "I was very much in that world of reptilian fantasy characters, and I kept messing up the whole time. I'd be like, 'Okay, where's the dinosaur? No, I mean dragon!' It was a weird thing, with the stark difference that when looking at dinosaurs, your expression is mostly fear. When looking at the friendliest, sweetest, most adorable dragon on the planet, your expression is largely one of love, excitement and fun. Eventually, by the time I was ending the shoot, I was clear on the dragon situation."

Pete's Dragon Review

Excellent

This hugely enjoyable adventure is a loose remake of the 1977 Disney hit that blended cartoon and live-action. By contrast, this movie feels almost unnervingly realistic, with seamless effects that bring a gigantic green furry dragon remarkably to life. With strong characters and a pointed story, this is a great movie for kids. And grown-ups might find themselves getting caught up in it as well.

Six years after being lost following a car crash, 12-year-old Pete (Oakes Fegley) is still living in the deep forest, playing happily with his dragon companion Elliot, who's like an enormous cuddly green puppy dog. But sawmill worker Gavin (Karl Urban) is travelling deeper into the woods. His brother, the mill's owner Jack (Wes Bentley), is urging caution, perhaps because his fiancee is the park ranger Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard). Then one day on the work site, Grace spots Pete in the trees and brings him back to civilisation. No one believes his fanciful tales of life with a dragon, just like they didn't believe Grace's father (Robert Redford) decades ago. But Grace's sparky daughter Natalie (Oona Laurence) does. And she decides to help Pete get home.

What follows is a fairly low-key adventure, as various factors come into play, mixing threats against this primordial forest with threats against Pete's bond with Elliot. It's a simple structure that immediately resonates with the audience, mainly because director-cowriter David Lowery keeps everything within the realm of believability. And the actors deliver similarly authentic performances as people trying to grapple with a rather startling discovery. Urban has the most thankless role in this sense: the hothead who immediately makes all the wrong decisions for selfish reasons. But he brings some complexity where he can. And he's nicely balanced by Howard, Bentley and a seriously twinkly Redford. Meanwhile, both Fegley and Laurence deliver solid turns as believably resilient kids.

Pete's Dragon - Teaser Trailer

Pete is a young boy who lives in the forest, not many little boys would survive in the wilderness alone, but Pete has a HUGE force on his side, one that most people wouldn't ever believe. Pete is constantly accompanied and protected by his dragon Elliot.

Grace is the forest ranger who's grown up hearing her father's stories about a fierce dragon in the forest but to her his stories are nothing more than the fairy tale, as most would surmise.  However, Graces views on the whole situation might just start to change when she crosses paths with the little forest boy.

As Pete regales Grace with his adventurous way of life accompanied by his green friend, some of his stories start to ring a bell with her father's tales. With the help of Natalie, a local girl similar in age to Pete, Grace begins to try and trace back Pete's roots.

'Jurassic World' Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know, So Far

Jurassic Park Chris Pratt Steven Spielberg Joe Johnston Bryce Dallas Howard

Due for release a whopping fourteen years after its predecessor, the unveiling of the hugely anticipated Jurassic World is finally within our grasp. Overcoming what has been described as a decade of “production hell”, the fourth film in the gargantuan Hollywood blockbuster franchise had until recently managed to keep many of its details under wraps. Yet, as is increasingly common in Hollywood, such attempts were ultimately futile as finer details of the plot were leaked onto various websites.

Jurassic World

Such an act has fervently infuriated director Colin Trevorrow, who follows the lineage of both Joe Johnston and the legendary Steven Spielberg in helming the extensive filming and production schedule. The up-and-coming San Franciscan director, whose previous movie credits include only the TV-movie Gary: In Crisis and the low budget time travel adventure Safety Not Guaranteed, has had a sharp introduction to the prying eyes of the Hollywood press. His obvious dismay that elements of the film are known to the public a year before its scheduled release is perfectly understandable.

Finally, We Know The Plot For Colin Trevorrow's 'Jurassic World'

Chris Pratt Jake M. Johnson Bryce Dallas Howard

We were a little sceptical about last week's plot leak regarding Jurassic World, not least because Universal had done a pretty great job of keeping a lid on things so far. However, it's with a heavy heart that director Colin Trevorrow has confirmed that the rumors leaking online were in fact accurate.

Jurassic World

In an exclusive interview with /Film, a downbeat Trevorrow said: "When I was a kid, you got to discover everything at once, it washed over you and blew your mind. Now it only takes one person to spoil it for everyone else. I hope whoever leaked it is actively trying to undermine what we're doing. Because if they're trying to help, they're doing it wrong."

Restless Review

Excellent
Van Sant returns to his earthy-airy style for this story of a young man coming to terms with the concept of mortality. It's effortlessly honest, with edgy humour balancing the dark themes. Although it's also diluted by commercial sensibilities.

After his parents are killed in a car crash, the thoughtful young Enoch (Hopper) becomes obsessed with death, attending random funerals and chatting to Hiroshi (Kase), the ghost of a young kamikaze pilot. The at one memorial service, Enoch is rumbled by Annabel (Wasikowska), who pursues a friendship with him. As they become closer, Enoch learns that the sparky Annabel has a fatal illness, which means he can no longer put off dealing with the fact that death is actually part of life.

Hereafter Review

Excellent
Eastwood's skilfully unrushed direction merges with Morgan's astute, thoughtful screenplay to create a thoroughly unusual film that holds our interest with a provocative, beautifully played exploration of mortality.

George (Damon) has a gift: he can see into the afterlife and help people communicate with their lost loved ones. But he feels it's more like a curse.

Meanwhile in Paris, star journalist Marie (De France) has just recovered from a near-death experience. Instead of working on her planned biography of Mitterand, she instead starts investigating why accounts of after-death experiences are so shunned. And in London, pre-teen Marcus is looking for ways to communicate with recently deceased twin (they're played by Frankie and George McLaren).

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Review

OK
Part 3 of Stephenie Meyer's blockbuster tale continues the downward spiral of moping. It's efficiently made, with a few moments of energy and levity, but everyone really needs to lighten up.

Even though they're now pledged to be together forever, Bella (Stewart) and her dreamy vampire boyfriend Edward (Pattinson) are stuck in a gloomy funk. Not only does she have lingering feelings for Edward's mortal enemy, the hard-bodied werewolf Jacob (Lautner), but vengeful vampire Victoria (Howard) is still after her. Meanwhile, an army of young-blood vampires is building in nearby Seattle, mobilised by the hot-headed Riley (Samuel). And a Vulpari delegation, led by pain-monger Jane (Fanning) is on its way to clean up the mess.

Spider-Man 3 Review

OK
Did Batman & Robin teach us nothing?

Universally considered the worst superhero sequel ever, Joel Schumacher's bloated monstrosity temporarily derailed Warner's lucrative Dark Knight franchise when it tried in vain to fill gaping plot holes with a multitude of C-list villains and unnecessarily whiny sidekicks.

Manderlay Review

Very Good
You should be very suspicious of anyone who owns Dogville and no other Lars Von Trier film. It's a ruse, a hoax, and a ploy, a way for that pretentious NYU philosophy major with the vintage Members Only jacket to impress that really cool, semi-punk girl with the cool Husker Du pin and prove to her that his brain is much more worthy than anyone else's. To like Dogville alone is to like the idea of Von Trier and to think you're special for picking up all the philosophical ideas behind it, along with name-checking Brecht. You're not, and Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark, and The Element of Crime are much better films. Expect a copy of his latest film, Manderlay, Dogville's sequel, to be placed on that NYU kid's DVD shelf right next to Dogville, allowing for more philosophical meandering but this time, on racism and white, liberal guilt.

Picking up after the violent ending of Dogville, we catch up with Grace Mulligan (Bryce Dallas Howard, replacing Nicole Kidman) as her and her father (Willem Dafoe, replacing James Caan) end up at a small southern plantation named Manderlay. A young, black woman runs up to the car, yelling and crying about how they are going to whip Timothy (Isaach De Bankole). Stopping the car immediately and running onto the plantation, against her father's wishes, she finds that Manderlay is a plantation that still employs slavery. Seeing this as a grave injustice, Grace takes a few of her father's goons and starts running the plantation more like a business, making the white owners work while the slaves are given freedom to go about as they please, receiving shares in the crop's revenue. The slaves are led by Willhelm (Danny Glover), an older man who used to serve Mam (Lauren Bacall), the head of the plantation. As things progress, a dust storm, a child's death, the execution of an elder and Grace's slowly unraveling lust for Timothy start raising the issue that maybe things were better as they were.
