Rose McGowan Joins Critics Of 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Poster Depicting Jennifer Lawrence Being Choked

Rose McGowan X-Men Jennifer Lawrence

Former ‘Charmed’ actress Rose McGowan has voiced her concerns over a billboard promoting movie X-Men: Apocalypse which shows Jennifer Lawrence’s character Mystique in a chokehold. The image has already sparked outrage on social media and in New York one poster was covered in sticky notes which read: "This violence in my kid's face is not OK.”

Rose McGowanRose McGowan has criticised the X-Men: Apocalypse movie poster.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, McGowan said: "There is a major problem when the men and women at 20th Century Fox think casual violence against women is the way to market a film. There is no context in the ad, just a woman getting strangled.”

Sophie Turner And Tye Sheridan Dove Into X-Men: Apocalypse

X-Men Sophie Turner Tye Sheridan

Jennifer Lawrence said the newcomers weren't given an easy start: "They really get punched and beaten like the rest of us." To which James McAvoy responds that "they gave as good as they got as well. That's cool." Newcomers to the cast have likened the film to a summer camp where everyone hangs out together both on set and off. "We did everything together," says Sophie Turner, who joined the ensemble as Jean Grey. "Everybody plays together. We had a cast coordinator that organised events for us to go to, so it was like a bonding experience."

Sophie Turner took a break from Game of Thrones to film X-Men

This made it easier for her to work on creating a character. And talking with Famke Jansson, who played Jean in the first X-Men trilogy, helped. "The difference between this and Famke's Jean Grey," Turner says, "is that she's young, insecure and very alienated, even from the other mutants, because she's so powerful. She's also going through all the hormones and the boys and the stuff that every teenager goes through. Being a mutant ain't easy! So there's a real vulnerability to her, and it's great to see how she and Scott [Tye Sheridan as Cyclops] find each other through that alienation. She's a great role to play."

X-Men Apocalypse - Teaser Trailer

Mutants and humans alike are familiar with the story of Apocalypse, he was the first mutant and began harnessing his power in ancient times. Now, millions of years after his reign, Apocalypse is reborn and finds himself in the middle of a modern society and shocked by the direction both human and mutant life has taken.

Feeling there are few options left, Apocalypse calls on the help of Magneto and a group of other mutants to help 'cleanse' the earth of all the citizens who have contributed to its downfall. The Horsemen of the Apocalypse - headed by Magneto - start to wreak havoc around the world and it looks like the X-Men's attempts to save it are all but lost - especially when their team is badly hurt by the loss of one member.

Brian Singer directs X-Men Apocalypse which reunites the lead cast from X-Men: Days of Future Past and sees the addition of Sophie Turner as Jean Grey and Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse.

With Bryan Singer Back In The Saddle, X-Men Franchise Thrives Again

Hugh Jackman X-Men Bryan Singer

Bryan Singer's first two X-Men movies are considered high-points of the superhero genre, combining strong characters, ripping action and deep layers of resonant subtext. Then he abandoned the franchise to make Superman Returns (2006), leaving mindless action-comedy filmmaker Brett Ratner to make the underwhelming X-Men: The Last Stand. Fans thought the characters were done forever. And the even less coherent X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) seemed like the final nail in the coffin.

Then Matthew Vaughn stepped into the ring, hot off his post-modern superhero romp Kick-Ass (2010), he went back in time for X-Men: First Class (2011), a clever reworking of the characters that allowed him to recast them with rising-star actors like Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult. Never one to hang around or repeat himself, Vaughn then left to work on his thriller The Secret Service, starring Colin Firth, Michael Caine and Samuel L. Jackson.

'The Wolverine' Dominates Box-Office: But Did You Stay For The Easter Egg?

Hugh Jackman James Mangold X-Men

So James Mangold's The Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman, wasn't really that bad in the end. There was brief couple of days when Rotten Tomatoes was filling up with a flurry of bad reviews for the X-Men movie, though the heavyweight critics gave Jackman and company the benefit of the doubt.

WolverineHugh Jackman as The Wolverine

During its opening weekend at the box-office, the movie took a modest $55 million (despite estimates of $80 million) though pulled in $86.1 million internationally to comfortably recoup its budget. In other words, from now on everything that The Wolverine pulls in at the cinema and on DVD and BluRay is pure profit. In other, other, words - it's all been a rather big success.

How Does The Wolverine Stack Up Against Other X-Men Films?

Hugh Jackman X-Men

Hugh Jackman’s latest turn as The Wolverine in James Mangold’s The Wolverine has polarized opinion; some praised the J-movie style and deliberate slow pacing, while some found it out of place and dull. But how does the latest entry into the X-Men franchise compare to the other films in the franchise?

The X-Men panel certainly had the most impressive cast turnout. Actors from across the X-Men films appeared to promote X-Men: Days of Future Past, which is due to be released in 2014. Ian McKellan flirted with the younger reincarnation of his character Magneto, Michael Fassbender, commenting on Proposition 8, he said "It's great to be back in California, I feel safe here now." He continued by announcing "I'm looking for a husband", cheekily adding "it's great to meet you Michael".

The Wolverine - TV Spot

Logan is the mutant Wolverine who, along with a skeleton of adamantium, retractable claws and heightened senses, possesses a healing power that renders him ageless and immortal. To most, this would be a gift, but to Logan it is the biggest curse he could possibly suffer following the death of his beloved Jean Grey and his isolation from other mutants. He is visited by Mariko Yashida who takes him to Japan where her employer insists on repaying him for saving his life many years ago. Logan is offered the chance to surrender his life-saving powers in order for him to live out his life and take comfort in its natural end but, when it comes down to it, it may not have the consequences he hoped for as he is once again deceived and forced to fight to defend the name of the X-Men. Only this time, his chances are running out.

Carrying on from events in 2006's 'X-Men: The Last Stand', 'The Wolverine' returns in a more intense and testing story than ever before. It is the sequel to the 'X-Men' film series based on the Marvel comic books by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller and has been directed by James Mangold ('Girl, Interrupted', 'Walk the Line', 'Cop Land') who also co-wrote the screenplay with Mark Bomback ('Total Recall', 'Die Hard 4.0'), Scott Frank ('Minority Report', 'Marley & Me') and Christopher McQuarrie ('The Usual Suspects', 'The Tourist'). It will come to UK cinemas everywhere on July 15th 2013.

The Wolverine - Teaser Trailer

After alienating himself from his X-Men peers and being forced to kill the love of his life Jean Grey to save everyone else, he feels he has nothing left to live for. Immortality has become a curse, so much so that even the most dangerous of proposals to make him mortal are tempting. He attempts to abandon his Wolverine identity, but he is approached by Mariko Yashida who takes him to Japan where her employer, who is on his death bed, wants to repay him for saving his life by offering him a cure for his mutant powers. However, as he enters into yet another battle to the death, it becomes obvious that his newfound vulnerability is a force to be reckoned with as, while eternal life forced him to face the emotional trauma of the past, mortality forces him to face the biggest torment of his life as the limits of his body and soul are truly tested.
