New UK chart data for 2018 shows that female artists have nearly closed the gap regarding the number of weeks spent in the charts.
The gender gap is closing in the world of British pop music, according to new statistics, with the likes of Jess Glynne and Dua Lipa ensuring that women in pop are seeing their success begin to match that of their male counterparts.
Data analysis from the Press Association found that five of the ten most popular acts of 2018 were female or female-fronted, notching up a total of 310 weeks on the UK charts, in comparison to the 328 weeks achieved by male artists.
That’s a dramatic shift from compared to just a year ago, with the 2017 statistics showing that female artists spent just 226 weeks in the UK charts, with 386 weeks for men.

Ed Sheeran has penned two tracks for Jess Glynne's new album.
The 'Shape of You' hitmaker stormed the charts earlier this year with his comeback LP '÷' following 12 months away from the spotlight but, despite his busy schedule, the flame-haired hunk has still managed to find some time to pen two tracks titled 'Thursday' and 'Woman Like Me', for Jess' forthcoming record as she's hoping to emulate his success when she drops her new sound later this year.
A source told The Sun newspaper: ''After the success Jess enjoyed with her first album, she has been able to pick and choose who she works with but was delighted that Ed came on board. His offerings are set to be major components of Jess's album - his songwriting and her distinctive sound are a perfect fit.''

The six acts in Cheryl Fernandez-Versini’s ‘Groups’ category on the ‘X—Factor’ have all undergone name changes during the judges’ houses round. The name changes are said to be due to ‘copyright’ issues, but it’s common practice in the groups’ category to give acts a rebranding before the live shows.

Meghan Trainor, Jess Glynne and Mark Ronson are the other celebrity guests helping the judges select who goes through to the live rounds.
ITV has announced some pretty major names from the pop world as guests for the judges’ houses stage of ‘The X Factor’ over the next few weeks, the biggest of which is former alumnus of the show Louis Tomlinson who’ll be assisting Simon Cowell.
23 year old Tomlinson, who finished in third place on ‘The X Factor’ with One Direction back in 2010, will be helping Cowell choose which singers from the “overs” category will be going through to the live shows later in the series. Tomlinson will be replacing Cowell’s regular aide Sinitta in the chair, and ends speculation linking former judge Louis Walsh with the role.

London quartet Clean Bandit are well on their way to landing their first number one with their single 'Rather Be' featuring Jess Glynne - and it's absolutely no surprise. We thought they were good with their quirky classical/electronic/rap venture 'Mozart's House' last year, but this new track really shows that Clean Bandit are serious.
'Rather Be' is simply a mushy love song, be it about a lover, a friend or a family member, but the lyrical soppiness ('As long as we're together, there's no place I rather be') is definitely forgiven over the stunning instrumentation that accompanies it.
They've got the classical effect going on once again in 'Rather Be' with a jovial violin intro that is repeated in the chorus, but it's the flawless layering that really makes this song uniquely brilliant. It's not an unheard of structural method to individually build on sounds and instruments from the start of a song, but some electronic artists can be unjustifiably messy with their song-crafting these days. While the violin is the first sound we hear on the track, it is soon joined by the soulful vocals of Jess Glynne, then some upbeat, video game style synth blips before the slow bass kicks in.
