Biography

Lana Del Rey (born Elizabeth Grant 21.6.1986)

Lana Del Rey is an American singer songwriter who became widely known with the release of her single 'Video Games' in 2011

Lana Del Rey: Biography

Since the release of 'Video Games,' Lana Del Rey's offstage identity has been the subject of much discussion and intrigue.

Lana Del Rey (or rather, Elizabeth Grant) was born in New York City. Her father, Rob Grant, is a domain investor and a millionaire. She then grew up around Lake Placid and at the age of 15, left to go to boarding school in Connecticut.

Lana Del Rey: Music

Lana Del Rey released an EP in 2008 entitled 'Kill Kill' and in January 2010, released a full length album. The album was entitled Lana Del Rey but at the time, she was recording under her own name, Lizzy Grant. The album was released on an independent label and produced by David Kahne. According to Lizzy, "David asked to work with me only a day after he got my demo. She chose Kahne to produce the record on account of his pedigree - he has worked with a huge range of successful artists in the past, including The Strokes, The Bangles, Regina Spektor and Paul Mccartney.

Robert Grant is said to have helped with the marketing of the album. When Lana Del Rey began releasing music under that name, her album was withdrawn from iTunes, to avoid any confusion.

In June 2011, Lana Del Rey signed to Stranger Records, who are also home to Thomas Tantrum and Penguin Prison. However, when her debut single, 'Video Games' was released, she then signed to Interscope Records. She said at the time (in an interview for The Observer in the UK) that 'Video Games' was her favourite track, hence posting it online but it was not originally intended to be the lead single. Media attention surrounding Del Rey began to snowball and by the end of October 2011, Q magazine announced that she would be the recipient of their 'Next Big Thing' award.

The track 'Video Games' was also selected to feature in the TV series Ringer. She promoted the single with a number of live performances, including playing the Bowery Ballroom in New York and on MTV Push. A performance on Later. With Jools Holland also raised her profile in the UK.

To accompany some of her tracks, Lana Del Rey also directed some of her own music videos. The video to 'Video Games' was filmed in a retro, Super-8 style.

Born to Die, the debut album recorded under the name Lana Del Rey was released in January 2012, after the title track became the second single. On 14th January, she made her debut live US TV appearance on Saturday Night Live. Her performance was not well received, though, with many commenting on her lack of confidence onstage.

At the start of 2012, Lana Del Rey had already been nominated for a MTV Brand New award and the International Breakthrough Act at the 2012 BRIT Awards.

Upcoming Releases: A Spirit Of Independence Is Coursing Through Our Top 5 Favourite New Records For July

Billie Eilish Lana Del Rey Laura Marling

With CoVID restrictions beginning to ease and the prospect of live festival music no longer a distant dream there does seem to be a reserved air of optimism beginning to permeate into everyday life. As both Wimbledon and the British Grand Prix expect to host a capacity crowd, and the EURO 2020 final at Wembley is set to host 60,000 football fans, surely it can't be long before the green light is given to music venues, festivals and other events to open their doors and welcome back guests. Many concerts are still being cancelled due to the uncertainty, the latest big one being Dua Lipa who has rescheduled to 2022, however July should bring with it more sunshine, more good news and hopefully the first of a wave of gigs, shows and festivals that are all hoping that they can go ahead. Coupled with the likelihood of live music, Independence Day celebrations, Bastille Day and World Emoji Day!! there are also some great new releases to look forward to. Here's our top five.

As life gets one step closer to normality for those affected by the impact of the CoVID19 pandemic we take a look forward to what's fresh, new and exciting in the world of music. As schools get ready to receive students back into their actual, rather than virtual, classrooms, as the world gets ready to celebrate book day on 4th March, as F1 gets ready to race again, as the America's Cup begins, as the vaccination programme continues at pace, as the world starts to feel hope and optimism, let's take a look at what's to come. Kings Of Leon have a new album due out this month, as do The Horrors and Black Sabbath. Ringo Starr is releasing an EP, Sting is releasing a duets compilation and there are retrospectives due from Neil Young and Madness among others, however, as both Mother's Day and International Women's Day both fall within March we're going for an all female line-up.

Racism Or White Fragility? We Need To Talk About Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey

She's been accused of racism before now, but Lana Del Rey doesn't seem to make it any better when she tries to defend herself. We don't for a minute believe that the singer is a racist, but the white fragility is painfully strong in a recent Instagram post regarding her latest album cover.

The 35-year-old is set to drop her seventh album Chemtrails over the Country Club later this year, and yesterday (January 10th) unveiled the black and white retro-style cover art depicting herself and ten female friends crowded round a table. It's a fairly harmless image, but that didn't stop her from posting a seemingly pre-emptive defensive statement about people of colour.

Upcoming Releases: Five Albums We're Looking Forward To In September 2020

Marilyn Manson Lana Del Rey Idles Machine Gun Kelly Everything Everything

As some degree of normality returns to a crazy year and artists stop delaying their overdue album releases (COVID-19 isn't going anywhere any time soon after all), it looks like 2020 may not be a write-off for music in the end. Quarantine has obviously been good for some artists' creativity, because there's some seriously interesting looking releases coming this month alone.

Without doubt the most sonically extraordinary album of this year, 18-year-old Billie Eilish's debut album 'When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?' has united both pop lovers and alternative listeners thanks to its experimental yet infectious ethos. It's naive yet poignant, fun yet deeply unsettling with themes of bravado, drugs, love, climate change and heartbreak woven throughout the poetic lyrics. There's no-one quite like Billie.

There’s no release date as yet, but the last we heard LDR5 was going to appear in the first half of 2019.

Lana Del Rey And Azealia Banks' Twitter Feud Escalates

Lana Del Rey Azealia Banks Kanye West

Lana Del Rey’s social media feud with Azealia Banks is growing more intense, after the rapper had called out Lana for criticising Kanye West’s support for president Donald Trump.

The often controversial Banks, whose top hit single was ‘212’, had described Del Rey as “vapid”, after the singer had last week left a lengthy comment on Kanye West’s Instagram post. All this comes in the context of the rap megastar’s recurring support for the divisive president Trump. Got all that?

“Don’t use Kanye for your own vapid attempts to seem politically aware when there is SO MUCH MORE bootleg witchcraft you could be doing to TRY and take down 45,” Banks retorted on Instagram.
