Dr Dre

Legendary hip-hop pioneer Dr Dre will not face any charges over allegations made by a motorist earlier this week who claimed he pulled a gun during a dispute over a car blocking his driveway, after no evidence was found.

TMZ reported on Wednesday (July 27th) that the L.A. County District Attorney rejected the case due to insufficient evidence, after they reviewed the police report of the incident which happened on Monday and was widely reported.

Rapper Faked Own Death? Is Tim Dog Still Alive?

Tim Dog Dr Dre

Prosecutors in Mississippi are investigating whether rapper Tim Dog faked his own death. Fans of the artist will know that Tim Dog died in February from complications arising from diabetes, though a warrant has now been issued for his arrest. "I need proof," Steven Jubera, a prosecutor in Mississippi, told Memphis TV station WREG. "I need a death certificate showing that he's dead, because as far as I'm concerned, he's alive."

The case arose when a woman named Esther Pilgim claimed that Tim Dog - born Timothy Blair - had faked his own death to avoid paying thousands in debts. At the time of his alleged passing, Dog was thought to be in the process of paying off $19,000 to Pilgrim, according to the Guardian.

She was one of several women that Tim Dog defrauded in an online dating scam, for which he was charged with grand larceny. He was reported dead in February aged just 46 - the apparent result of a seizure relating to diabetes. The interesting thing about the whole thing is that the original word of Dog's death linked back to a story at The Source, which appears to have disappeared. None of the stories at the time offered any solid information about the death.

Spotify Scrap Five-Play Limit, No More Dreaded Greyed-Out Songs

Trent Reznor Dr Dre

Spotify has announced it is scrapping its five-play limit for non-paying users in the UK. The policy was introduced in April 2011 for all Spotify Free users after six months of usage, leaving music fans with the unsightly image of their favourite songs being "greyed out" after five plays. However, in a blog post on Tuesday (March 19, 2013), Spotify said non-paying users can now "listen to your favourite songs as many times as you like."

"We've got some mighty fine news for all Spotify Free users. From today, there's no more 5 play-per-song limit. You can listen to your favourite songs as many times as you like," continued the statement, "That's right, no more greyed-out songs. The tracks that you couldn't listen to before will once again be available for your listening pleasure." The five-plays limit had already been moved from Spotify services in Sweden, Spain, Finland, Norway and The Netherlands. The streaming giant recently revealed it has well over 20 million active users and has paid out more than $500 million to music rights-holders since 2006, though notable competition is on the horizon.

Nine Inch Nails frontman and tech guru Trent Reznor has teamed up with Dr Dre to develop Daisy, a new music streaming service that will be in direct competition with Spotify. Set to launch in mid-2013, the Beats By Dre funded project will place more emphasis on human recommendations, as opposed to Spotify's computerised advice. "There's a real value in trusted filters," Reznor told the New Yorker. "It's like having your own guy when you go into the record store, who knows what you like but can also point you down some paths you wouldn't necessarily have encountered."

Beats By Dre Gets $60m Investment For Streaming Service To Rival Spotify

Dr Dre

Access Industries – owners of Warner Music Group – have ploughed $60m into Beats By Dre for a new streaming service called Daisy, which is set to rival Spotify in the music streaming market.

“Beats has the vision, the brand, the management team and now the investor group to effectively change the expectations and experiences of a music subscription service," said Len Blavatnik – co-founder of Access. “I’m looking forward to taking on this exciting challenge together.” Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor will also be helping to design 'Daisy', which, like its rivals, will be a subscription-based service.

It would appear as though this kind of media streaming is in vogue, with both Google and Apple reportedly planning to launch their own music streaming service. Reuters even reported that Apple approached Beats with a view to a partnership. "Beats was always about helping people re-discover the magic in the experience of listening to music,” said music mogul Jimmy Iovine. “Now that we are well along the way to addressing the quality of audio playback with Beats headphones and speakers, Daisy allows us to re-introduce the same magic into the process of music discovery and consumption".

New Skylar Grey Video ‘C’mon Let Me Ride’ Stars Eminem Doing Auto-Tuned Queen Chorus

Eminem Skylar Grey Queen Rihanna Dr Dre Lupe Fiasco Fort Minor

The new Skylar Grey video of ‘C’mon Let Me Ride’ featuring Eminem is a crash course in a total lack of subtlety. “If you got a sweet tooth/ you can taste my watermelon,” she sings in the opening line… whilst cupping her breast, just in case you didn’t get the joke. Luckily, Skylar’s tongue is well and truly situated in her cheek. Which is pretty much what you’d expect for a song featuring an auto-tuned Eminem singing Queen’s ‘I Like To Ride My Bicycle.’

In fact, if this video was not intended to be comical, we’d all be in trouble: featuring bikini clad girls with three breasts and over-inflated collagen lips, a ridiculously daft but catchy chorus, and footage of Skylar cycling around in a pair of denim cut-offs, on a bicycle adorned with antlers. It's entertainment in its gaudiest, most glorious form.

If you’re wondering who Skylar Grey is, she’s the 26 year-old artist who co-wrote three different versions of ‘Love The Way You Lie,’ made famous by Rihanna and Eminem. She’s also got previous form as a vocalist for Dr Dre, Lupe Fiasco and Fort Minor. She released her debut solo album Like Blood Like Honey back in 2006 and her second Don’t Look Down, is scheduled for a 2013 release. If this latest video’s anything to go by, we reckon Skylar’s going to be one to watch. She certainly seems to have bundles of humour and personality, not to mention talent. Oh and she’s clearly good mates with Eminem. What’s not to like!?

Dr Dre Top List Of Highest Paid Musicians

Dr Dre Roger Waters Elton John Jon Bon Jovi Britney Spears Sir Paul McCartney Taylor Swift Justin Bieber Toby Keith

Dr Dre has become the highest earning musician of the year according to Forbes' list of the world's highest-paid musicians of 2012.

The rapper, who has been working on the follow-up to 1999's 2001 for an unprecedented time, has scooped up a whopping $110 million in pretax earnings over the year, and no prizes for guessing that his Beats by Dre headphones are at the root of his earning power. The majority of his massive earnings this year come down to the sale of 51% of his Beats company to mobile phone maker HTC, who bought a controlling stake in the business for $300 million earlier this year, around $100 million of which went to Dre.

Whilst Dre taking the top spot may have come as a surprise to some, the rest of the list is even more surprising with a number of musical icons proving that they still have massive earning power despite not maintaining the popularity they once had. Number two in the chart, Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, is no exception to this, as he scooped in a massive $80 million this year alone, largely due to his ongoing work with The Wall Live Tour.

It's Official: Dr Dre Is The Richest Man In Music

Dr Dre Elton John U2

When we say 'in' music, we mean musicians, but Dr Dre is the richest of them all, according to Forbes. Sure you might have been searching Gangnam Style or bopping away to Bieber over the last year, but it's Dre on the top of the list that matters (to some).

He is kind of cheating though, as not all of his money comes from his musical talents; his popular Beats headphones franchise has seen him glean $100m in pre-tax PROFIT, which added to his extensive back catalogue of hip hop, and the fact he was probably the biggest rap artists through the 90's, it's not hard to see how Dre ended up atop the rich list. Last year's highest-paid musicians U2 dropped to #4 this year, with combined earnings of $78 million from their three-year 360 tour. 1990s British boy band Take That, who's finances were boosted by their reformation in 2005, rounded out the top five with $69 million, earned from an eight-date tour at London's Wembley Stadium, which became the highest-grossing single stadium tour to date.

The  top 10 is dominated by some contemporary artists, but only one's that have been contemporary for ages; veteran musicians if you will. Pink Floyd's bassist and singer Roger Waters coming in at No. 2 with earnings of $88 million from his lucrative The Wall Live tour, and British singer Elton John at No. 3 with $80 million.

Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap Trailer

Hip hop has always been more of a culture than just a genre of music. It represents a huge portion of the marginalised world of America and how they managed to create something from nothing; how their lifestyle and previously buried literary talents created a culture that has inspired millions. The frontman of rap/ metal band Body Count Ice-T takes his audience on the road to visit the founding fathers, the major superstars and the rising stars of the rap genre including Afrika Bambaataa, Eminem, Nas, Mos Def, Kanye West, Chuck D, Krs-One, Snoop Dogg, Run-DMC, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube and discover the skill and feeling behind what has made them international music heroes. One of the frequent interviewees is Grandmaster Caz who we are taken to visit on several occasions as he writes a new set of rhymes called 'The Art Of Rap'.

Directed by Ice-T with help from Andy Baybutt, 'Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap' is a feature length music documentary delving into what goes into making the seminal hip hop records that have dominated music since the late '70s. It came about when producer Paul Toogood asked Ice-T the simplest of question which the star had never before been asked: How did he write seminal tracks such as '6 In The Mornin' and 'Colors'?

Featuring: Common, Ice Cube, Chuck D, Mos Def, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Nas, Kanye West, Darryl McDaniels, KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane

Who Is Skylar Grey And Why Is Eminem The Executive Producer Of Her Debut Album?

Eminem Skylar Grey Dr Dre Lupe Fiasco

These are the questions we were asking as soon as we found out the news- who on earth is Skylar Grey? And What does she do? Is she a female rapper? Is she the newest, hottest urban artist to hit the world? No. No she's not. But, she does have a really nice voice, which is definitely a good start for a singer.

It's odd that no one knows who she is, because she's done collaborations with Dr Dre, Fort Minor and Lupe Fiasco. She also was part of the writing team for Rihanna and Eminem's 'Love the Way You Lie'. Part of the reason Skylar Grey is so illusive is that for many years she was going under the name 'Holly Brook'- a distinctly more 'grey' name than her Grey name. She will be released a single called 'C'mon Let Me Ride' from her forthcoming album 'Don't Look Down', that was originally going to be called 'Invincible'.

Eminem will be producing 'Don't Look Down' which is set to be released early next year. Grey has become Slim Shady's shadow lately, with multiple collaborations as well as appearing on two tracks from  Slaughterhouse's 'Welcome to: OUR HOUSE', with which Eminem was also heavily involved. MTV quotes her saying: "Eminem's increased involvement has been such a blessing; I'm getting guidance from an artist I really admire and trust," Grey said. "Having written many new songs, the album has become a completely different animal, hence the title change. This new single with Em, in particular, is very exciting. We have worked on so many serious songs together - it's a nice change of pace to do something fun and sarcastic." Well, whoever Skylar Grey is, if Eminem likes her then so do we.

Guess Who's Back, Back Again? Eminem Returning With 8th Studio Album

Eminem Dr Dre

There have been few more interesting ways to release news about an upcoming album than by releasing a flatpeak that implies it, but that's just what Eminem has done. Using the Detroit Tigers colours and logo style on the front of the limited edition hat, the 8 Mile rapper also included the dates of his albums releases on the side, including the date 2013 which implies his 8th studio album will be released next year. The retail website that the hat has been released on says that a portion of the proceeds will go towards the Marshall Mathers Foundation.

He has commented, infrequently, about work on his latest album since May of this year (2012). According to Entertainment Weekly, Dr Dre and No I.D. have been working on the project with Eminem. His albums are always awash with the industry's best producers and collaborators, and with these two guys on board it implies that it'll be a good'en. This 8th album will be the first since his 2010 album Recovery which was both revered and criticized, splitting many reviewers. At the ripe old age of 40, the hope is that with added maturity, 20 years of extraordinary lyrical experience and the world's best producers at his feet, Mather's 8th album could be his best yet. Only time will tell.

No I.D. said "I definitely sat down and spoke with Eminem about working and we agreed to get in the studio and see what we could do. He's one of the best, I want to work with one of the best and try and give some music contributions. I think that would be one of the next steps in that lineage of what I'm trying to do." Eminem has also been working with Slaughterhouse this year, touring with the hiphop supergroup who are signed to Shady, Eminem's record label.

Migraine Stricken Lil Wayne Leaves Hospital, Thanks Fans For Prayers

Lil Wayne Dr Dre

Lil Wayne has checked out of hospital after recovering from severe migraines and dehydration. The rapper's management says he's now on "mandated rest", though will return to work soon, reports the Associated Press.

Fears began to grow for Lil Wayne on Thursday (October 25, 2012), after his plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Texas when he began suffering from the migraines. Early reports suggested he had seizure, though this was played down by his spokespeople. An official statement  said the New Orleans star appreciated his fans' support though Weezy tweeted his own message of thanks on Saturday, saying he's "good" before adding, "Thanx for all the prayers!"

Lil Wayne, 30, is currently working in the follow-up to 2011's Tha Carter VI. Last month, he released Dedication 4, the latest in his hugely popular mix-tape series. During a recent interview with MTV News, the rapper revealed how he had recorded nearly 90 songs with Dr Dre, which could appear on Dre's forthcoming Detox album. The pair have apparently been working together extensively over the past couple of years.

Eminem Readying New Album For 2013

Eminem Dr Dre 50 Cent

Eminem could very well be readying himself to release album number 8 as early as next year, and the clue to its release may very well be found in a piece of merchandise of his.

Earlier this week, Exclaim reported that a ‘baseball tribute hat’ had become available on the rapper's online store, with the side of the hat listing ‘world championship’, or rather album release dates. Starting with 1996's Infinite, the list goes up to 2013, which potentially means that Marshall Mathers is all but done with recording the follow-up to 2010’s Recovery and is just applying the finishing touches already. Em had already discussed his plans to make a new album in the near future during the summer, with the hat further cementing his claims.

He discussed his upcoming work with US radio DJ Whoo Kid, saying at the time he had not yet made any progress thus far, but is planning on sending his stuff over to Dr Dre when he thinks they're done so he can “listen and see what he thinks I'm missing." Producer No ID and fellow rapper 50 Cent have also spoken about the upcoming project and their contribution to it, with 50 saying that he is set to appear on either the album’s “first or second single.”

Rising Rapper Kendrick Lamar Lists His Top 25 Albums

Snoop Dogg Kendrick Lamar Dr Dre The Notorious B.I.G

Kendrick Lamar, a member of the Black Hippy crew (with fellow L.A. luminaries Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul), caught the attention of Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre and now he's scaling the heights with some aplomb.

Now, in-between sell-out shows and writing new music, Lamar has taken time out to reveal some of the albums that influenced him to become a world renown rap artist. The list, compiled by Complex Music, has some seminal albums in its ranks, with Dr. Dre's 'The Chronic' featuring prominently. "That was probably the first rap album I remember them playing in the house from top to bottom," Kendrick recalls. "Songs that I actually remember as a kid. That's the start of them house parties I always talk about growing up." Another of Hip Hop's most important albums was 1994's Ready To Die, from Notorious B.I.G, and this also features on the list. "[What resonated with me was] the storytelling, just the storytelling, how in-depth the storytelling was. The storytelling and the flow. The one thing about West Coast music, we had storytelling, it wasn't crazy in-depth like that, but we had it. Our stuff was more laid back, more flow and feel good, more how records felt. His was just grimy. Stories was crazy. Flows was crazy." Lamar explained.

Kendrick Lamar: Good Kid, M.A.A.d. City: The Most Significant Hip Hop Album Of 2012?

Dr Dre Kendrick Lamar

The Black Hippy rapper Kendrick Lamar releases his first major label studio album today, entitled Good Kid m.A.A.d. City.

The album was leaked online last week and Twitter has already been awash with comments from eager fans who simply couldn’t wait for the official release. Or, you know, simply couldn’t be bothered to pay for it.

The album has already been tipped to become one of the most popular hip-hop albums of the year, according to examiner.com. The Observer’s reviewer, Hermione Hoby describes Good Kid… as “probably the year’s most significant hip-hop release.” That’s a pretty weighty accolade for the 25 year-old, who is mentored by Dr. Dre (who gets a co-sign on the album) but with five mixtapes and an independent album release under his belt, he’s plenty experienced enough to deal with the attention. Like Dre, Lamar has a wealth of life experience to draw on in his lyrics, having grown up in Compton and often refers to the “harsh realities we in,” laying it all bare, just as Dre once did.

A Coup For American Idol, But Is Nicki Minaj’s New Job A Boost For Hip-Hop?

Nicki Minaj Wiz Khalifa Lil Wayne Dr Dre Nas

Nicki Minaj’s decision to join the American Idol judging panel will undoubtedly do wonders for her own career but will could other rappers expect the same success if they tried to pull a similar move? Wiz Khalifa told MTV News he could judge another singing competition, if Nicki can manage the Idol crowd. Some industry insiders seem to be in agreement, others aren’t so sure that Nicki’s latest career development will do much for hip-hop as a whole.

Karen Civil - author of her own blog and the woman in charge of running the social media accounts for the likes of Lil Wayne and Dr. Dre’s Beats By Dre headphone company – reckons that Wiz would do a good job of joining a TV talent show. “I can see Wiz hosting one of these shows,” said Karen, though she did add a cautionary comment, saying “even though he smokes a lot.” Karen also reckons that Nicki’s addition to American Idol is a double-win. As well as Nicki opening herself up to a new audience, Karen says “They need her, they need her audience, she's a very popular person and her fans are going to tune into everything that she does, so that equals viewership for them.”

Brian Miller of RapRadar.com isn’t so sure that Nicki’s success would translate so well to all rappers though. He makes the valid point that recent Nicki Minaj songs have had strong pop-crossover potential. Not all rappers have this. “I don't think Nas would ever get $8 million for judging someone in a hip-hop competition, you have to be a pop star to acquire that kind of money," he said. "If you're not in a pop lane, you're never going to ever get this kind of exposure or these kind of crossover looks.” And we’re inclined to agree.
