'Love, Rosie' Tries Another Rom-Com Twist

Lily Collins Sam Claflin Juliette Towhidi

While some filmmakers are happy to rely on the same old formula, others are forever seeking a new approach to a tired genre. And with its nagging predictability, there isn't a trickier genre to refresh than the romantic comedy, because everyone knows that there's only one way these movies can possibly end.

Lily Collins and Sam Claflin in 'Love, Rosie'
Are Lily Collins and Sam Claflin stuck in the friend zone in 'Love, Rosie'?

With the British rom-com 'Love, Rosie', director Christian Ditter and Juliette Towhidi, adapting Cecilia Ahern's novel, have a distinctly unusual premise even if the conclusion is rather foregone. This is the story of two lifelong friends who are clearly attracted to each other but neglect to reveal their feelings, sending their lives in very different directions.

Avril Lavigne, Sandra Bullock, Kathy Griffin and Zoe Saldana completed the top five, whilst Jon Hamm was the only male star to get a name check in the top ten. Review Round-Up: 'The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones'

Lily Collins Jonathan Rhys Meyers Kevin Zegers Jamie Campbell Bower Robert Sheehan

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones was released in the UK and US yesterday (21st August). The majority of reviews have been highly critical of the movie, claiming it draws too heavily on typical aspects of the teenager supernatural genre. The film may have been compared with Harry Potter and The Twilight Saga, however it seems unlikely, if the critics are correct, to be as successful as such franchises.

The Mortal Instruments is based on the best-selling series of teen fiction books by Cassandra Clare. The fantasy movie centres on Clary Fray (Lily Collins), who discovers she is descended from a race of warriors. These warriors fight evil in an alternative New York City called 'Downworld'. Collins is supported by such actors as Jamie Campbell Bower (The Twilight Saga); Kevin Zegers (Gossip Girl); Jemima West (The Borgias); and Robert Sheehan (Misfits). They are pitted against Jonathon Rhys Meyers (The Tudors) in the role of Valentine.

Stuck In Love Review

OK

Far too tidy to be believable, this multi-strand romance holds our attention with a warmly comical tone and a watchable cast. But it's only entertaining as a bit of escapism, because the various relational entanglements are far too contrived for us to identify with them. A looser, messier approach would have made it a lot more involving.

The action takes place over the course of a year. Bill (Kinnear) is a noted novelist who stopped writing when his marriage to Erica (Connelly) ended. Even though she's now married to a fitness instructor (Joiner), Bill is waiting for her to come back to him. Although he's engaging in a mindless fling with a married neighbour (Bell) in the mean time. Bill and Erica's daughter Samantha (Collins) has just published her first novel, but has sworn off romance. Then she meets the persistent nice-guy Lou (Lerman). Meanwhile, her teen brother Rusty (Wolff) is finally working up the nerve to speak to his crush Kate (Liberato), who has both a cocaine problem and a bully (Schwarzenegger) of a boyfriend.

Writer-director Boone lets each character introduce themselves with the first line from the book of their life, and the litrary theme continues in almost every scene as they continually discuss their writings and their favourite books. Very quickly, this begins to get on our nerves, as if Boone is reminding us that nothing we're watching is actually happening: it's carefully orchestrated fiction that draws on real-life emotions to tell a series of implausible love stories. Aside from Kinnear and Connelly, who are strong enough actors to convince us of almost anything, none of the interaction feels remotely realistic.

How Lily Collins Saved Natalie Portman's 'Pride And Prejudice AND ZOMBIES'

Lily Collins Natalie Portman

Lily Collins, the young British star who rose to fame in Mirror Mirror, will play the lead in the big-screen adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It's been a long road for the project, which began with producer Natalie Portman deciding she would play the list. Things soon changed when scheduling conflicts got in the way, while the intended director David O'Russell always left the project. A revolving door of lead actresses, reportedly including Anne Hathaway and Scarlett Johansson, sniffed around the movie, though Collins was able to commit. Charlie St. Cloud director Burr Steers is reportedly in line to direct, according to Empire magazine.

The script - still credited to O'Russell - closely follows Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice, though sees a dangerous conflict against a zombie apocalypse in late 18th century England. Lizzie Bennett (played by Collins) will be tasked with fighting the undead.

Hollywood is hot for zombies at the moment, with recent flick 'Warm Bodies' seemingly coming from nowhere to make over $110 million worldwide. If World War Z proves to be as big a success as expected this summer, the team behind Pride and Prejudice and Zombies may well be rubbing their hands together. Collins has plenty of time to boost of profile and she next stars in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, which hits theaters on August 23, 2013.

Lily Collins Replaces Natalie Portman In 'Pride And Prejudice And Zombies'

Lily Collins Natalie Portman

Lily Collins is attached to the movie adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's mash-up novel 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.' The movie was originally set up at Lionsgate with Oscar winner Natalie Portman to star, though the studio went through a revolving door of directors including David O'Russell, Mike White and Craig Gillespie before the project seemingly fell apart.

Following Portman's exit as the star, Scarlett Johansson, Mia Wasikowska and Anne Hathaway flirted with starring in it, though Lily Collins appears to have snagged the role. The producers - which include Portman - have chosen '17 Again' director Burr Steers to helm the adaptation.

Panorama will produce and finance the movie, which they intend to sell at the Cannes Film Festival, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The 2009 book is a mash-up of Jane Austen's classic 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice with elements of modern zombie fiction, crediting Austen as a co-author. The story follows the plot of the original book, but places it in an alternative universe version of the Regency-era of Britain, where zombies, skunks and chipmunks roam the countryside.
