HBO and Jon Stewart have mutually decided to cancel the proposed and much-anticipated ‘animated shorts’ project that had been announced more than a year-and-a-half ago because of technical problems, it has been announced.

The project, first revealed way back in November 2015 shortly after Stewart had signed off from Comedy Central’s ‘The Daily Show’ after presenting it for 16 years, had been vaunted as the next step in Stewart’s career after his late night hosting duties.

“HBO and Jon Stewart have decided not to proceed with a short-form digital animated project,” the network said Wednesday (May 24th), according to the New York Times.

Comedy Central is losing another late-night talk show host. The TV channel's latest victim is Jon Stewart who will be stepping down from his hosting position on 'The Daily Show' when his contract expires at the end of this year.

What does the future hold for the newly "deathless" Stephen Colbert?

The final episode started off slow, with Colbert not even speaking a word until halfway through the thing. It kicked off with an intro by Jon Stewart, as per tradition, with the Daily Show host eventually tossing the ball to Colbert himself. John Oliver has gotten off the mark with his new solo show Last Week Tonight on HBO, which didn't stray too far from the concept and structure of Jon Stewart's The Daily Show. The reviews were, on the whole, pretty good and Oliver certainly didn't do anything wrong in his first outing.

The news that Stephen Colbert would become Letterman’s successor on The Late Show has had time to circulate over the weekend and, by now, anyone who cares has had time to form an opinion. Most online sources seem be taking the change as a good thing. The character Colbert created on Comedy Central could add new life to the Late Show format, which has been going stale for some time now.

But the naysayers have to ask – what if Colbert doesn’t bring his Comedy Central character with him? Unlike say, Jon Stewart, who would have been the obvious choice for the “Late Show” gig, Stephen Colbert has always played a character on The Colbert Report – a hilarious, well-acted, faux Conservative pundit, who was obviously created just for satire – not actual pop culture critique. That schtick wouldn’t really work on the Late Show format. A few gags here and there are welcome, but Letterman has, for the most part, hosted as Letterman during his 21-year-long tenure.

John Oliver’s new HBO show has finally been made official with the announcement of a title and a release date. Oliver fans rejoice! The former “Daily Show” correspondent will begin “The Tonight Show Last Week With John Oliver” (bit of a mouthful) on April 27 at 11 p.m. The show will take a satirical look at the biggest news headlines of the week, not unlike Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show” format.

Oliver wants his show to have a distinct voice, different from that of "The Daily Show".

This is as much as Oliver and HBO have revealed at this point, meaning that eager viewers will have to wait for the official premiere to find out exactly how Oliver’s format will differ. The host didn’t exactly make it clear during his appearance in front of the Television Critics’ Association in January.

We loved John Oliver on The Daily Show, but let’s be honest – it’s really Jon Stewart’s schtick. Well, fans of the comedian/director/pundit will no doubt be glad to learn that he is finally back to hosting the satirical news show. Stewart spent the summer filming his movie Rosewater in Jordan and, naturally the opening gag had to make reference of that.

Stewart returned with a healthy tan and a bout of nostalgia.

We won’t spoil it for you, but it did involve Stewart, Oliver, Stephen Colbert and Big Mac defibrillators. It might not have been the subtlest of gags, but it did get the point across – Jon Stewart is back and entirely his old, red, white and blue American self. And while Stewart admitted to enjoying the cultural experience, apparently there’s nothing like being back in the good ol’ US of A. "For all that I appreciate and learned about the culture that I was immersed in, boy, I'm Western, in all its glorious, decadent imperfections," he said. "I recall driving back to New York City thinking, 'Hello dildo shop near a school.’”

Jon Stewart is taking the summer off his duties at The Daily Show, a hiatus which started last night. It’s alright though, because Stewart’s post is aptly covered by the show’s regular correspondent, John Oliver, who kicked off his run last night (Thursday) prompting a spike in the satirical news program’s viewership. As much as fans have enjoyed Oliver’s hosting skills however, Comedy Central is expecting an even bigger spike tonight, when Stewart links in from location via Skype.

Stewart has left the show in capable hands.

Oliver will assume hosting duties until fall, while Stewart is off directing his very first movie, according to Deadline. Stewart’s directorial debut, Rosewater, will keep to his area of expertise, political commentary. The film centers on the story of a journalist, detained in an Iranian prison and interrogated using brutal methods. The movie is expected for a 2014 release, with the exact date still to be announced.

Jon Stewart, US writer, comedian, and host of Comedy Central's The Daily Show, has made an appearance on Egyptian television's top satire program, Al-Bernameg. He was introduced as a guest after being brought out by suited goons underneath a hood to the sound of Star Wars' Imperial March. After the hood was whipped off and he was introduced as Jon Stewart, the crowd exploded into cheering and applause.

Al-Bernameg, which translates to The Program, is Egypt's equivalent of USA's The Daily Show where a mock news studio and news presenter is used to send up political figures and occurrences. The program is hosted by Bassem Youssef, who rose to fame as an incredibly popular comedian after making online political videos mocking Egyptian politics during the 2011 uprising.

An unmasked Stewart began to speak to the audience in Arabic, saying "thank you" and "please sit down, I am a simple man who does not like to be fussed over" over and over again before he explained in English that that was all he could memorise. The rest of the interview was conducted in English, which included Stewart's upcoming Iranian documentary Rosewater, and the issue of satire in a country as strict as Egypt.

John Oliver made his debut as Jon Stewart's temporary replacement on the Daily Show on Monday night (June 10, 2013) and proved to be quite the hit. The British comedian - recommended to Stewart by Ricky Gervais - used his tried and test brand of self-depracating humor from the off. And it worked.

"I am John Oliver and let's all just acknowledge for a moment that this is weird. This looks weird, it feels weird, it even sounds weird-and this is my actual voice," he began, to a barrage of applause. There was some criticism of Oliver's interviewing techniques, though he had already joked of his disdain for celebrity sit-downs and his questions of comedic actor Seth Rogen were reasonable enough. Mainly he just told the actor that he loved his new movie This Is The End. 

Oliver can't lose as Daily Show host. He had a couple of clever tactics for thwarting the critics, firstly thinking out loud how he'd be barracked for the performance, and secondly partaking in a little skit with special correspondent Aasif Mandvi about Buzzfeed apparently posting 'The 27 Worst Moments of John Oliver's First Six Minutes.'

John Oliver? No? Never heard of him? Well, the British comedian is about to replace Jon Stewart as host of the Daily Show, just for the summer of course. Recommended to Stewart by Ricky Gervais, the dark-haired, bespectacled, self-deprecating Oliver has a popular podcast following, though the Daily Show is his biggest gig to date. Obviously.

The comedian was taping a stand-up set for the fourth season of his Comedy Central series John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show at the Webster Hall on Tuesday night (June 4, 2013) when he was asked by an audience member if he was excited to fill the boots of Stewart, "The only thing I'm nervous about is talking to guests like human beings, because all of my interviews so far have been attacking people," Oliver says. "I have a genuine concern about sitting across from an actor whose movies I obviously haven't seen."

On a recent interview with one of the hottest movie stars of the moment, Oliver explained, "Two nights ago, I had a nightmare I was interviewing Jaden Smith. I said, 'Look, Jaden, I haven't seen "After Earth" but the trailers look awful,' and behind him, I could see Will Smith doing this [raises a fist]. I don't know why in my head that's how Will Smith expresses anger, like a 1920s journalist."

Jon Stewart’s departure date from the Daily Show has been confirmed and it’s coming up fearful soon folks. Don’t panic too much though, he’s not gone forever and it’s a safe pair of hands that’ll be taking over from him while he’s away – correspondent John Oliver.

While he’s away Stewart will be directing his first feature film, titled Rosewater and adapted from the book Then They Came For Me: A Family's Story of Love, Captivity and Survival by journalist Mazir Bahari. As the Los Angeles Times reports, the book and film tells the story of BBC journalist Bahari, who was sent to an Iranian prison for four months on suspicion that he was a spy. Among the evidence against him was an appearance he made on The Daily Show, during which correspondent Jason Jones appeared in a deliberately goofy spy outfit.

Meanwhile the Daily Show gets Olivier from June 10^th until September 3^rd, when Stewart will return. The British comedian has been with the show since 2006 so certainly knows the ropes, and in a statement he said "Don’t worry, it's still going to be everything that you love about 'The Daily Show,' just without the thing that you love the most about it." Guests scheduled for his first week in charge include Seth Cohen, Armando Iannucci, Marvis Staples and Fareed Zakaria.

John King’s erroneous report that a suspect had been identified in conjuction with the Boston bombings triggered a trail of CNN slip-ups on which Daily Show host Jon Stewart made them pay. Chris Cuomo, Fran Townsend and King tried to put the error down to third parties, dodgy sources and mystical events.

“There’s clearly something afoot today,” said King, possibly trying to pin the blame on Harry Potter. “We’re getting some conflicting reports about an arrest,” said Coumo. “The information has been dribbling and drabbling—there’s obviously been a lot of confusion,” added Townsend, using words that don’t really mean anything to explain what happened. Cuomo then summed it all up by saying: “We don’t know what’s right or not right at this point, and as Anderson always says, you don’t want to go down the road of speculation wrongfully.” Well, step in Mr. Stewart, who always knows the right (funny) thing to say. “Well, that’s what you were doing!” he said/screamed in reply.

He’s known as a funny man, but The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart will be putting his serious face on after it was revealed that the comic and TV host would be directing his first film, adaptation Rosewater.

Whilst it’s certainly interesting news regards Stewart’s career, and you ‘d reckon he’d definitely be able to make a good fist of helming a movie, it’s perhaps less good news for fans of his dayjob, The Daily Show. As the New York Times reported, making the film is going to require Stewart taking 12 weeks off the program. “I am a television person who is accustomed to having a thought at 10 a.m. and having it out there at 6:30 p.m. and moving on, so this is a little scary, yes,” Mr. Stewart said to the paper.

The film is an adaptation of a book called Then They Came For Me: A Family’s Story Of Love, Captivity And Survival, by Maziar Bahari and Aimee Molloy. The story concerns Iranian journalist Bahari’s 118-day imprisonment following the 2009 Iran elections, which he was covering. Talking about it, Stewart commented “One of the reasons we are in this business is to challenge ourselves, and I really connected to Maziar’s story. It’s a personal story but one with universal appeal about what it means to be free.”

The Daily Show stalwart and everybody's favourite satirist Jon Stewart will be going on a temporary hiatus from the show that bears his name this summer, with Deadline reporting that the comic will be directing his first film whilst he is away from the hit show.

Stewart's first venture behind the camera is for the adaptation of the Maziar Bahari memoir Then They Came For Me: A Family’s Story Of Love, Captivity And Survival. The adaptation, which has been given the more movie poster appropriate title of Rosewater, tells the story of Bahari's time in a Iranian prison, where the Iranian/Canadian journalist was locked away for 118 days in 2009. During his absence form the Daily Show, DS writer and Community star John Oliver will be taking his place for eight of the twelve weeks that Stewart will be away, with hosts for the other four unconfirmed.

Bahari and Stewart first struck up a friendship after the journalist's appearance on the Daily Show prior to his arrest in Iran, with Iranian authorities citing his appearance on the show as proof that he was a spy. Following his release Bahari has appeared on the Daily Show two other times, his most recent appearance coming in 2011. Despite Stewart's comedic background, Rosewater will be a serious film so don't go see it expecting a satirical look at Iranian prisons. Filming will begin this summer.

To contact Hugh Grant via Twitter the name he's chosen for himself is @HackedOffHugh. Despite that being a reference to his recent work in the Leveson Report, it's more than apt for the accusations levied towards him by Jon Stewart.

The Daily Show host, in an informal interview with his friend and colleague Stephen Colbert, during a fundraiser for the Montclair Film Festival, spoke about his experience with Grant when he came on The Daily Show for an interview: "He's giving everyone s*** the whole time, and he's a big pain in the a** ... And we've had dictators on the show." Said Stewart, quoted by NY Daily News. Back then, in 2009, Grant was publicising the terrible movie Did You Hear About the Morgans? and criticised a clip of the film used in the show. "What is that clip? It's a terrible clip," Grant said. "Well, then make a better f***ing movie," Stewart acerbically replied.

Since hearing about Stewart's opinion of him, Grant has used his twitter account, normally reserved for information and discourse about the hacking inquiry, and used the platform to apologize for his behaviour:

Kristen Stewart will hopefully, finally, be able to shake that singular association with Bella Swan and The Twilight Saga, and reinvent herself in movies that garner a little more respect from the film industry, since it's finished. And, she'll have plenty of time to do that as she plans to be in the business for a long time. 

Speaking to E! on the red carpet for her latest movie, an adaptation for On the Road, she was asked her about plans acting, "Oh man, I really love my job," she said, "I would not give it up." E! also revealed that she'll be spending Christmas and NYE with Robert Pattinson, before he jets off to start work on his next big project. Plus, despite telling Robert Pattinson to ditch K-Stew after she cheated on him in the summer, Jon Stewart praised her on her performance, when she joined him on The Daily Show: "It's a terrific performance," Jon told her. "For a novel that they say is unfilmable, you guys did a hell of a job. So nice work."

Although Jon Stewart's made a turn around about his opinion of Kristen, reported by Entertainment wise, according to a poll at The National Wedding Show saw Robert Pattinson be voted the most eligible bachelor jointly with Prince Harry, showing that despite the reconciliation between the pair the rest of the public still consider him fair game. 

Jon Stewart - the U.S. host of The Daily Show - has named Hugh Grant his least favourite guest on the programme, following his appearance in 2009. The British actor, known for his romantic-comedies, was described as a "big pain in the ass" by Stewart, who says he is no longer welcome on the show.

Speaking during a Q&A last week, Stewart laid into the Love Actually star, naming him as his least favourite guest, adding, "And we've had dictators on the show." The actor appeared on The Daily Show while promoting his poorly received comedy Did You Hear About The Morgans? though reportedly spent much of his time complaining to staff and saying he had better places to be. He also complained about the clip that was shown to promote the film, though Stewart responded, "Well, then make a better f***ing movie." Though Stewart's remarks come as no real surprise, the pair are both prominent critics of the media, with Grant taking an active role in the campaign for tighter regulation of the British press in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal. Stewart almost quit The Daily Show in 1999, saying, "What I did not realize is, a lot of the people who worked there were assholes."

The Emmy winner replaced original host Craig Kilborn, immediately shifting the tone to sharply satirical. 

A slew of New York natives, as well as plenty of Brits performed at last night’s 12-12-12 benefit concert for victims of Hurricane Sandy, which ripped through the city in October.

Bruce Springsteen, a Jersey man himself, took the stage first with Land of Hope and Dreams followed by the evocative Wrecking Ball and the very aptly themed My City in Ruins, all of which was meant to address the rebuilding process and the NY spirit. The musician spoke fondly of his native New Jersey, mentioning its inclusiveness. “I pray that this chraracteristic remains the same” Springsteen went on to say, before going into Born to Run, for which he was joined on stage by Jon Bon Jovi, another Jersey resident.

The concert was definitely geared towards classic rock fans – a smart marketing decision, since this is also the demographic with the highest disposable income. Besides a number of to-the-bone New Yorkers, like Jon Stewart, Adam Sandler and Alicia Keys, it also featured an unexpectedly high number of appearances by British musicians – The Who and Sir Paul McCartney among others. The ex-Beatle joined the surviving members of Nirvana onstage for a cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit.

With election fever hotting up in the USA, Jon Stewart and Bill O'Reilly took to their soapboxes to provide their own debate over the Presidential duel running between current incumbent Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. The debate did focus on some key points, but ultimately the aim of the game seemed to be on comedy and entertainment, which those paying $4.95 for the stream got in spades. It was certainly a great deal livelier than the real candidates' debate last week.

Politically minded TV hosts Jon Stewart and Bill O'Reilly brought the laughs to George Washington University in Washington, D.C., with a charity spoof of the on-going presidential campaign on Saturday night(October 6th).

Under the title The Rumble in the Air-Conditioned Auditorium, Stewart stared as the fictitious Democrat facing O'Reilly's Republican 'candidate,' with the whole thing being live-streamed to an eager online audience.

The 90-minute debate first brought the laughs when the 5'7" Stewart decided to go one bit higher than the 6'4" O'Reilly by using a mechanical pedestal to gain the height advantage. Comedy Central's outspoken Liberal Stewart then proceeded to lay into Fox News controversially right-wing O'Reilly, labelling him as the 'Mayor of Bullsh*t Mountain.' The debate was not solely a chance for the two hosts to go at each other's throats though, as the whole thing was a light-hearted and good natured affair whose main purpose was to bring the laughs, USA Today and CNN have both said.

Can you feel that? It's the earth reverberating after Jon Stewart nearly shocked a primetime television audience by dropping an F-bomb at last night's Emmy Awards 2012. Stewart was up on stage to collect his now seemingly obligatory gong for The Daily Show - its 10th consecutive win in the history of the Emmys - and, after a mock fight with his cohorts Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon, he almost caused a nightmare for television broadcasters by swearing.

Stewart praised his competition by stating "Stephen Colbert - their show, what they did with superpacs this year was ridiculous, ridonkulous. Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, I spend way too much time on the Internet watching their shows. Real Time with Bill Maher is constantly writing lines I wish I'd written. Without Lorne Michaels and SNL, I don't think any of us would be doing this. We make topical comedy which has the shelf life of egg salad, so to do this for 15 years and have tangible proof that what we do isn't just ephemeral is wonderful."

The air turned blue when he then commented "Years from now, when the earth is just a burning husk and aliens visit, we'll find a box of these and they will know just how predictable these (effing) shows were." However, producers were able to bleep out the expletive and save what would sure have been a disaster of unimaginable proportions.

Elsewhere at The Emmys, Homeland picked up the award for best drama, beating our favourite for the prize, Breaking Bad, and halting Man Men's quest for an unprecedented 5th consecutive award for the category. Bad night for AMC then.
