The 'Happy' star spoke to GQ Style magazine about his recent success.
With pretty much the whole world at his feet having had the biggest selling single of the last few years, you could perhaps excuse Pharrell Williams for being immodest. But in a new interview he was very humble when comparing himself to one of his musical idols Jay-Z.
Speaking with Germany’s GQ Style magazine, the 41 year old said he would “sound braggy” if he were to rap like Jay-Z and use the same lyrics that he does. He believes that all artists should find their own style and that imitating someone else is unlikely to pay off.

That's not the point of the show, says Williams.
The Voice has taken more than a couple hits of criticism recently: it’s dull, it’s repetitive, it just can’t keep up in the ratings race. One of the biggest is that so far, NBC’s answer to American Idol has failed to produce launch a lasting career in music for any of its winners. But here’s what Pharrell Williams, now in his second season as a panellist on the popular (sort of) format had to say to the critics – aka a group of journalists at the show’s Season 8 press conference.
“I don’t understand why we have these interviews, and people ask the same question every time,” Williams said via The Wrap. And that wasn’t where the rant ended.
The 41-year-old singer/songwriter recently revealed he prefers the company of females because he can relate to them "more honestly" than men.
Just because Pharrell Williams is always around women doesn't mean he is a womanizer, in fact the main reason the 41-year-old singer-songwriter prefers the company of a female is due to a certain characteristic that men can sometimes lack.
Williams can relate to women "more honestly" than men
While being interviewed by GQ, Williams, who is married to Helen Lasichanh, even admitted he relates to women "more honestly" than his own gender because they tend to be a lot more "sensitive."
It's the second time in just over a week that the star's new album 'Rebel Heart' has been hacked by leakers.
It’s not been a very happy Christmas for Madonna, with the news that yet more tracks from her upcoming album Rebel Heart have been leaked online.
The 56 year old star had been hit with a security breach just over a week ago when a dozen songs from her thirteenth studio album, about which she hadn’t even given any details at the time, were leaked. After some outbursts and emotional pleas on Instagram, by the end of the week she had decided to release six tracks as a counter-measure.
Madonna has had tracks from her new album 'Rebel Heart' leaked for the second time in a fortnight.

Pop sensations settled down for interviews as they prepared for their Jingle Ball concert.
As usual, the Y100 Jingle Ball was a pop explosion with some of 2014's biggest chart sensations giving it their all on this year's stage in Miami, Florida. Among which we saw Ariana Grande, Pharrell and Iggy Azalea - but what did they get up to backstage?

'Miami's #1 Hit Music Station' Y100 hosted the perfect pre-Christmas concert on December 21st 2014 at the BB&T Center with this year seeing ultra sultry performances from the likes of Ariana Grande and Jessie J - who looked like serious besties as they hung out backstage, ever since they collaborated with Nicki Minaj on J's number one 'Bang Bang' earlier this year.
The Grammys are coming! The Grammys are coming!
It’s time to talk about the Grammys – which, of course, would be impossible without talking about Taylor Swift and Sam Smith. The young powerhouses of pop came out on top with two and four nods, respectively. But they had to wait a while to celebrate this year. Instead of the typical primetime concert, the Grammys turned Nomination Day into an actual day-long event this year.
Early on, Sam Smith led the pack with four nods.
Starring Iggy Azalea, Beyonce and Smith himself as presenters and Pharrell Williams and Ed Sheeran as presenters, there was quite a lot of back patting going on. "Very happy for Miley," said Williams, when asked what he thought about the nominations. "Super happy for Beyoncé. A lot of great names. ... Ed. That's big."
Carson Daly hosted the charity concert to benefit Living Beyond Breast Cancer and the Young Survival Coalition.
“We are here to celebrate women tonight and their survival,” said Pharrell Williams as he took to the stage during the ‘We Can Survive’ concert to benefit breast cancer charities. The ‘Happy’ singer was joined by a host of other stars including Taylor Swift, Gwen Stefani and Ariana Grande to raise money for the Living Beyond Breast Cancer and Young Survival Coalition.

As well as performing renditions of hits such as ‘Get Lucky’, ‘Different’ and new song ‘Come Get It Bae’, Williams also joined friend and fellow 'The Voice' judge Gwen Stefani on her classic track ‘Hollaback Girl’.
Released in the UK today, Nas takes us on a journey through his landmark debut 'Illmatic'.
The 1990s marked a turning point for rap and hip hop, with plenty of artists making their mark on the scene with seminal releases. Nas was one of them, and now his landmark debut 'Illmatic' is being explored in a telling documentary, 'Nas: Time Is Illmatic'.
'Time Is Illmatic' explores the legacy of Nas' debut
Like many young black men exposed to rap culture, Nas (born Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones) was forced to live a life of fear and poverty as a youth, with guns and killings being a thing of daily terror. After his early collaborator Ill Will was shot dead and his brother injured in the process, it was time to write an album revealing the truth about ghetto culture - and the fear and rivalry that comes with it. 'Nas: Time Is Illmatic' explores his moving relationship with his parents against the grim backdrop of Queensbridge, as he rose up to become one of the greatest rapstars of all time.
Following the release of 'Paperwork' in October, 2014, T.I. and Pharrell Williams talk about their writing process.
Almost every musical writer has their own way of working on a project, and now Pharrell Williams and T.I. have revealed their differing writing processes. T.I.’s latest album ‘Paperwork’, was produced by Pharrell, who also worked on the album’s title track, after meeting over the course of T.I.’s album ‘I’m Serious’. T.I. explained this, saying: “I think the first time we met was the ‘I’m Serious’ session, if I ain’t mistaken, or maybe we may have met in passing at some parties here and there before then, but, you know, our first time really have the, I guess, elaborated extended conversation was the ‘I’m Serious’”.
T.I.'s new album, 'Paperwork', was produced by Pharell Williams
While Williams take a more traditional approach to musical writing, i.e. using pen and paper, he was shocked to discover that T.I. had a remarkably different process. "That's when I first saw you, like, how you wrote. 'What's this guy doing? He's just standing there.'" Williams explained. The process in question, is how T.I. choses to do all his musical writing in his head. "Jay [Z] was the only other person that I knew that, that, did that. Cos I always thought that was an anomaly." This came even more of a shock to Williams as the process took place when T.I. was around 19 and he himself was around 30.

It might sound crazy what I'm about to say...but Weird Al has just scored his first number one on the Billboard 200 with his new album "Mandatory Fun."
The album was released only one week ago and sold 103,000 copies to secure the top spot. 'Mandatory Fun' is Weird Al Yankovic's fourteenth studio album, so he will surely be happy his efforts have finally paid off. It is also the first comedy album to reach the top spot since Allan Sherman's 1963 release 'My Son, The Nut'. Previously the closest Al had come was a Number 2 with 1996 single 'Amish Paradise'.

The full lineup this year includes over 60 acts, set to perform at Roundhouse over a full month. As usual, the tech-centric event will be filmed and streamed live by Apple, with fans able to watch on their computers, iPhones, iPads and iPod touch devices, or on their televisions via the company's Apple TV set-top box. Looking after its international customers, the company has promised to make the livestream available in over 100 countries. This year, the festivities will be broadcast through the iTunes store on iOS devices, rather than through a dedicated app.
Budweiser Made in America is coming soon, but what's it like to be made in Denver, Colorado?
Budweiser Made in America
We explore the diverse Denver music scene as Budweiser unveil the latest in their series of documentaries ahead of the fast-approaching Budweiser Made in America festival.
When Jay-Z embarked on his Budweiser Made in America project, the ethos he wanted to represent was simple; bringing together bands and artists of all genres to celebrate the rich variation that has become the US musical community. And where better to enjoy this multi-genre theme than Denver, Colorado, home to the likes of everyone from gentle folk rock crooners The Lumineers to industrial Goth collective Velvet Acid Christ?
Iggy Azalea is set to perform at the Los Angeles based part of the Made in America Festival. She is joining the likes of Kayne West, Rita Ora, John Mayer and Kings of Leon who are also performing at the Philadelphia-Los Angeles festival produced by Jay-Z.
Iggy Azalea will be joining the likes of Kanye West, Rita Ora, Kings Of Leon and John Mayer at the Made in America Festival at the end of August. The festival, produced by Jay-Z, will celebrate its third anniversary in Philadelphia and the first time it has also been held in Los Angeles over the last weekend in August.
Iggy Azalea will appear at the Made in America Festival at the end of August.
Plus, a version of "Blurred Lines" we can actually get behind.
Parodies of Pharrell’s Happy may be well past their sell-by date, but good things take time, as Weird Al Yankovic will probably tell you. That’s the one he released this week. Tacky, a take on Pharrell’s smash hit from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack has the same innocuous lyrics and bright colours that have been luring the easily amused to Weird Al’s parodies for decades.
The curls aren't going away, in case you were wondering.
And that’s not all! Apparently the 52-year-old comedian has six more spoofs in the pipeline. According to the Reddit AMA Yankovic did on Tuesday, he will be releasing eight videos in eight days, ahead of his new album, Mandatory Fun. The second one, which was released today, is of that other big Pharrell hit, which nobody really wants to acknowledge these days – Blurred Lines. Except in Al’s case, it’s Word Crimes,, in which he lament the serious issue of bad grammar, spelling and punctuation online. Well, at least it’s a better message than the original, though admittedly Robin Thicke didn’t set the bar too high.

What are music critics saying about Ed Sheeran's new album?
Ed Sheeran is not a singer who has to worry about what critics say. You wouldn't either, if your latest album had stormed the charts worldwide, selling zillions of copies and breaking umpteen records. Having taken the pop world by storm with only aIt seems amazing that x (pronounded "multiply" is only the 23 year-old second album, following on from his 2011 debut, +.
"This is, in every respect, a richer blend, more seamlessly combining the factors that made him so immediately accessible first time round," says The Telegraph's Neil McCormick, adding "these are genuinely great songs, where melodies flow, rhythms groove, choruses erupt and lyrics jab you with surprises."
Praising "Sheeran's willingness to tackle issues not normally dealt with in the realm of fizzy teen pop," The Guardian's Kitty Power. "Penning relationship crack for teenage girls is a much-derided art, despite being perfected by the Beatles, but Sheeran's is particularly calculated," the critic adds.

Wait, what was that about BET?
Lionel Richie’s Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony during the BET Awards on Sunday was moving, inspiring and… wrong. Well, part of it was, anyway. Richie received musical tributes by Pharrell Williams, John Legend and Yolanda Adams, each of whom performed a song by the soul legend.
Despite the typo, the ceremony and musical tributes marched on.
Even though his name was repeated multiple times during the show and we’re guessing BET staff know how to use spell check, someone still misspelled Richie’s name as Ritchie on screen. Before the mistake was noticed or acknowledged, Twitter took the typo and ran with it. The misspelled name quickly started trending on the website and many people seemed unaware of the mistake.

You'd think they'd have bothered to double-check the name spelling of the recipient of the 'Lifetime Achievement Award'!
Whoever was in charge of the captioning at last night's BET Awards should hang their head in shame after they misspelled the name of the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award, Lionel Richie. During the televised coverage of the Black Entertainment Television Awards on Sunday night (29th June), which was watched by millions around the world, the broadcasting team managed to spell Richie's surname as "Ritchie."
Sure, plenty of worse things could have happened, but it's still a pretty embarrassing move considering Richie was practically the guest of honor at the bash. To make matters worse, the mistake flashed on the screen in large lettering as the 65 year-old soul star headed to collect his prize.
Soon the hashtag "#lionelritchie" began trending on Twitter as viewers picked up on the blunder and quickly spread the news leading to embarrassment for the show's production team.

It’s almost time for the BET awards and tonight’s show promises some memorable moments. Lionel Richie has been tapped to perform during the annual award show, as well as being this year’s Lifetime Achievement honoree. He joins this year’s lineup, which also includes stars like Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams, Nicki Minaj, John Legend and Drake.
Richie is being honored for over four decades of transformational music.
Currently in the fifth decade of his career, Richie’s list of achievements is quite impressive. He has sold over 100 million albums worldwide and won five Grammy awards. His music has changed the face of soul and R&B, but Richie frequently crosses genre lines to experiment with pop, soft rock and even country.

Apparently 'Happy' wasn't always Pharrell's song...
Pharrell Williams has revealed that his hit single 'Happy' was, at least at one point, not destined for his own vocal talents. The 41 year-old singer revealed to Howard Stern that the song he co-wrote was offered to Gnarls Barkley star Cee Lo Green, who apparently did a pretty good job.
